Film Scenes that got burnt onto your memory
by greendawn inwhat were some film scenes that pleased or horrified you so much that they stayed vivid in your memory for a long time?
the one i always recall is the scene where anthony hopkins (playing as hannibal lector) lobotomised ray liotta (paul krendler) cutting off pieces of his brain and giving them to him to eat.
he also took some of liotta's cooked brain in a plane and gave them to an unsuspecting passenger boy sitting next to him to eat.

Movie: The Truman Show = Jehovahs Witnesses? Anyone seen this movie?
by Trojan inby now, i realize there are a couple of good movies that help to understand the situation a jw finds himself in, once he finds out the truth about "the truth".
like: the village, the island, stepford wifes.
i find that these movies help me to understand the situation of being trapped in a cult and the mixed emotions about finding out and the courage and strenght needed to leave.

How about 1984 starring John Hurt and Richard Burton? I found it alarming and chillingly parallel to the WBTS treatment of its people. It alarmed me that I could have ended up like John Hurt did at the end of the movie. Gave me chills.

Do Jewish people have an opinion of jw's?
by sass_my_frass ini only ever met one jewish lady at the door, and i had no clue at the time that they were the original people of jehovah (education by awake), but she very politely snotted me off.
i'm just curious whether anybody knows what jewish people think of jw's, if they do at all?
are jw's the ultimate blasphemers?

Yes, they do! I once worked at the Associated Jewish Charities in Maryland and the Jews I worked with considered JW's not only annoying, but truly offensive. Especially during their holy days when JW's ring the Jews' doorbells and attempt to convert them. One of the Jewish women I worked with has a sister-in-law who is a JW. She said that her sister-in-law became insane because she could not make her children believe in the JW theology.
Sounds right to me.

I loved McGavin's portrayal of a father in A Christmas Story. I watch it everytime it is on. His tirade of cursing (unintelligible) always leaves me laughing. I will miss him.

I am STUNNED......
by Frannie Banannie ini just got a call from the social security office.
now......these people sent me a letter of denial of ssi even before their doctors examined me a coupla weeks ago, so i couldn't imagine why they would be calling me.
at first i thought she was telling me that they'd mistakenly sent out the denial letter to me, but that wasn't it.

kristyann,
I agree with you 100%. It was the very thing that led to so much confusion when I was a JW that I didn't believe Michael Jackson was a JW. I asked about it of the "mature ones" and still did not get an answer. This double standard eventually led me out of the WT. Still I wonder how can they get away with it and the rank and file cannot.
I don't understand how Prince can call himself a JW with his eccentric lifestyle..

A 1975 story
by TooBad TooSad inwhile i was in high school in the mid 60's i was told that the end was so near that i would not get to graduate from high school so i should not be concerned about being drafted due to the war in vietnam.
well i got drafted but did not pass my physical due to a medical problem.. i then considered go to school in the late 60's to enter the medical field.
i was encouraged by the elders not to do this because the end is so near and why get schooling for a profession that you will not need in a few years?

Welcome JUG! Looking forward to hearing from you in the future. By the way, I attended an ex JW Meetup two years ago. It was a disaster. It turned out to be Ex JW's who had converted to Born Again Christians who were attempting to convert the rest of us Ex JW's to the Born Agains. On the other hand, I have heard through this forum that there are good Ex JW Meetings. I guess it depends on where you are.

Bankruptcy: Any experiences?
by CaptainSchmideo indid it make your life easier?
did you later regret it?
did you wish you had done it sooner?

Hi Captain,
I filed bankruptcy three years ago. It has made my life easier. Filing bankruptcy will not stop credit card offers from coming to you. Albeit their APR's and finance charges are very high. I got an offer from a credit card company less than one year after I filed bankruptcy. Credit cards were my downfall, too. The downside is of course, that it stays on your credit report for seven years. At least here in the United States.
