An interesting ethics management question. Those of you that have taken an ethics course know that it can leave you feeling dizzy.
The question, IMO, is is the WTBS exercising a stringent enough examination system to identify ethical boundaries and have appropriate decision matrices for its personnel? This is not easy to do even for a small organization (I was in a financial services watchdog program-compliance cops).
Do those of you with mutual funds (even "ethical" ones) request quaterly portfolio listing and review the activities of each company-do you own part of haliburton, tobaco companies, arms manufactueres and so forth? All they do is in your name.
In this case, I do find it bizarre that this type of donation would be accepted but it does not constitute a relation with PHM Tobacco any more than you investment holders (I screen those companies myself but I'm an anal, contrarian bastard!). To say there is a relationship is misleading missing the true issue which is acceptance of the income offered by the trust-I'm aware of no law forcing receipt of trust payments up in canada (I'm an ex-investment funds advisor and banker)
Eduardo is technically right.

Did You Date As a JW To Just Find A Marriage Mate??
by minimus inor were you a recreational dater?

Ah... those wonderful 19th century dating ettiqeutte rules. I never dated a JW chick in my cong. since there was never anyone worth the grief you would recieve when "caught". Worldly girls were off limits so school really sucked. When I moved to a larger JW community the problem persisted since all the eligible women would party all weekend and repent on Monday and you got to explain how your evening went with a couple of elders.
So, no teenage sex for me but I never had one of those bloody meetings whilst almost everybody else I knew at the time were walked into the interrogation room! That was never going to happen to me. My friends made a pact in my early twenties (while still coasting along in the org.) to have nothing to do with our christian sisters and it was one of smartest things I've ever done (even if it meant a lot of onesome's).

You know you're NOT a JW anymore when...(add some)
by Flindersgirl inyou don't automatically wake up with a headache on sunday morning.... you no longer go around (while in field service) mentally deciding what home you'll "have" after armaggedon.... every item of clothing you buy as a woman is not first assessed for its modesty value.... you no longer worry about the 144,000 watching you have sex...:).
when on holiday you don't have to find the nearest kingdom hall asap (remember brother and sisters you are not on holiday from jehovah!!!).
being able to laugh about having a numb ass at the assemblies from sitting and the hilarity in having to tell people that you found the meeting "uplifting" when really you were fighting sleep the whole time.... you no longer have to avoid entire sections of music stores in order to make sure you don't pick up and "demonistic" vibes from backmasked cd's.

You're not a JW anymore when you give out your first birhday gift to somebody "over the table"!

lets get the elders stoned
by what_Truth? inthinking about vallis assembly post on the other board made me think of an evil idea.
suppose you were at an assembly eating lunch with the elder about to give the next talk (one of those two hour groaners).
all of a sudden he leaves to use the bathroom and you have a chance to sneak an illegal narcotic of your choice into his food*.

Can 'the truth' survive the Internet?

I think the org. is doomed in the longer term but not because of the internet. All major "christian" religions are struggling to update their doctrine in order to keep up with the evolution of western society. As the west has become more civilised (individual rights versus the community at large) the old style philosophies or values that we inherited from our medieval ancestors appeals less and less in the face of reality (post war Europe for example).
As our sccieties continue this on this arc (if we don't kill ourselves off first) philosophical frameworks will evolve as well (United church for example) andgive rise to a more humanist/Buhdist style religion. I believe this is one of the reasons for so much interest in the Pope's health as conservatives fear a liberal faction gaining control of the papacy.
The internet is just another step in this logical progression.

JW at meetings vs. JW at social events
by truth_about_the_truth inhave you noticed how jw switch modes depending on where they are?
they seem a lot more 'normal' at social gatherings than while they are engaged in 'theocratic' activities.. it's like there's a spiritual switch that they turn on and off.
zombie mode/human mode

My father was one of those who would preach at the drop of a hat wherever he was but you're correct. One quarter are too fearful (ridicule, derision, etc...) and the two quarters modify their behaviour in accordance with the envirionment they find themselves at the time (school, work, social events, etc...) when not "on duty" to varying degrees.
Most younger individuals I've known did this for the life experience more than anything else and then the deception starts and they learn to lie like gangbusters to protect those experience opportunities which is the saddest thing in my opinion.

The Social Structure in the Congregation
by Mary inever notice how the "happiest people on earth" are also the most class-oriented?
to say that jesus said his followers should all be on equal footing, it's incredible how much the r&f witness is not on equal footing.
the social structure in the congregation is more complex than the blueprints of a nuclear warhead, but just so that you "remember your place", see if you can find where your niche was/is:

Great post Mary. My family were category 5 except that my old man intimidated most of the category 1's and 2's in our hall. I guess some things in human organisations are universal!
