No pension no preparation for retirement

a lot of my ex fellow servants must be now in their seventies, what can you do?.

no children no money no home.

it is so sad.. so many decided not to have children as the end was right around the corner and that was decades ago.

You were not the only one in the Witness religion who went to school and took night classes on the QT. I heard similar stories about those going in for nursing or others taking courses needed for their jobs. It was a deep dark secret. How stupid.

I remember at some point when I was taking a class for something and some ignoramus older brother said humorously: “what do you want to be a doctor?” 🙄 I was bothered by criticism by people with a secure cushy life because maybe they were close to retirement having ALREADY earned their living.. They just didn’t give a shit or it never entered their mind that some younger person had to make certain about their financial situation.

My hat is off to anybody like me who resisted stupid talk and criticism by fools and hypocrites - and who went and got that degree or certificate or stayed on that job until the end. Nobody is going to pay your bills.

If anybody is suffering now because they caved in to peer pressure and never had that decent job - unfortunately nobody in the religion feels any accountability about this!

Jehovah`s Witness Elders who were Business men in The Congregations I Attended.

a number of topics have covered work experiences by members who have encountered crticism for having a full time job .in the last few congregations i had attended this was never an issue as elders had businesses they owned and employed brothers and sisters .. while i personally never worked for a jw, both my young sons did at one time or another and my wife did also .i have always worked full time in secular employment and have never been criticised for doing so .and to my knowledge nobody else ever had that experience.. in the first cong.i attended an po as they were called at the time was an insurance agent and his bro.

was an assistant po also worked with the same ins,agency.. other congs,i attended one elder was an owner of a cabinet making firm while about 3 other different elders were self employed builders who ran their own business and employed others to work for them .. at the same time a couple of ms servants had their own plastering business going on supporting these elders business.. so i`m just wondering whether this is just depending on where you are from in the world and what time period we are talking about.. the time i`m talking about was in the sixties and seventies and the area was in s.e.

Yeah, it was a pretty sick mentality there in the Witness religion as far as I was concerned and that’s why now I wouldn’t so much as give a dime and would run from them.

I also saw what you mentioned about them wanting or favoring females who had no education, lived home - in other words BORN INS or at least raised in. I couldn’t care less they (males or females) didn’t like me or were afraid of me because I was ‘independent’. I saw the discrimination and lack of trust and always thought to myself:..how was this religion supposed to grow when they were downright hostile to newcomers who had a job or education? They actually push people out the door whether they know it or not. Of course, this is a blessing in disguise.

But, it’s all very much in the past and I’m glad I’m Out and retired.. I did the wise thing to look out for myself.

But, getting back to the OP: where he lives he worked and had no problem with criticism. So, there is/was a terrible double standard and hypocrisy in pushing poverty for a certain segment of people there but not others! This is definitely not Okay with me.

Whether you were ‘planning for the future’ or not, it’s none of the religion’s business that you had a full-time job or business.

I remember you saying you live in Australia. Maybe the JWs weren’t so much intrusive into people’s personal business as they are here in the U.S. - Here, they think they have a right to be up your behind - and they also have a double standard.. Gross hypocrisy.

As I mentioned to you once, I experienced awful treatment because I had a job but yet older people who were affluent or with a business (whether they were elders or not) were left alone. Imagine that? They thought they would push ‘poverty’ for younger baby boomers back then. I know of three single females who are ‘poor’ today because they listened to this! One gets by with help from non-JW family.

But, thankfully, I never listened to this garbage and am retired today. I wouldn’t want any of the stuck-up pioneers my age who thought I wasn’t ‘spiritual’ coming near me looking for money.. I’d never open my purse for any of them.

New and improved?

i have a family member who had been df'ed for 15 years or so...recently they reinstated as a jw.

when i asked what motivated them to make that decision, the response was to be able to see family and old friends.

they insisted that things were different now.

I have two JW acquaintances I speak to from time to time who try in vain to entice me back into the religion. They say the religion is ‘different’ now and more ‘loving’. I’m not fooled and no longer interested anyway. I’m done with all that.

I’m retired more than several years and they haven’t come to my door yet in any place I’ve lived. To be honest, even before Covid I never saw them around like years ago.

It would be interesting if they did call.

i decided to do this posting because of some comments in the post about pensions.

in the mid to late 1980's there was a flood and the local kingom hall was damaged and many of the friends homes were damaged...groups came in to help repair.

my then mother-in-law literally lost everything-she had no home to repair...she had been renting a small trailer and it washed away.

I’m glad I had a childhood eating at home. My mother was a good cook and baked well. But, my dad was fussy and complaining even though he didn’t know how good he had it. Besides, when you eat home at least you know what’s in your food.

I also was about seventeen when I first ate out. But, being as I worked for years - eating out was something I got used to even if it was no substitute for mom’s cooking.

Getting back to the original theme of the thread: any so-called ‘needy’ Witnesses had better learn how to shop at a grocery store like functioning intelligent people and prepare the food at home. Learn how to live economically..Maybe they should even approach that brother who has a business and ask if he has a part-time job available!

ADJUSTED KNOWLEDGE:

I am glad you have a career with a pension. Nobody in their right mind would want to be at the mercy of anybody’s charity.. And I’m glad your parents got out when they did and made sure they planned as well.

When you say that you saw only a ‘handful’ of JWs who were generous with their money, maybe the others were criticized for having a full-time job like I was. The way I see it, you don’t get to criticize somebody for having a job - and then ask them to give money to people there who never wanted to work! ..Sorry, but I couldn’t care less about anybody there who never really wanted to be in the workforce.

It’s too bad that so many Witnesses fell for the hype about ‘Armageddon’ and didn’t plan for their future/retirement!.. I’m glad I never fell for this.. As you said, so many worked for low wages or didn’t work much at all. They would have needed several decades of steady work to get a decent SS today.

DESIROUS OF CHANGE:

Yes, that’s right. You went to a grocery store and bought food economically and took it home to cook it.

I know I’m giving my age away, but I was never in an actual restaurant until I was in my teens! I always ate at home or over relatives houses. If somebody is really broke, they eat at home.. A few comments on this thread about people who gave money to JWs thinking they were ‘needy’ - only to hear they did something outrageous with the money - makes me hope these generous people learned their lesson!

In my experience and opinion, JWs are ingrates with a wrong sense of entitlement. Because many never really wanted to work and have no idea about money, they wrongly imagine and believe urban legends that a pile of money will be dropped on them.. I could never stand these people and especially nowadays I would run from them.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH:

Because there is no infrastructure or department there for the care of the needy, any money given will go into a black hole. It’s not going to go to who you would wish it to.

HOSER:

That is very true and all the more reason I worked full-time and looked out for myself years ago when I was in the religion.

Besides, all I had to do was look around the hall at older people collecting THEIR pensions. Yeah, pioneer my a$$! I have No regrets about holding onto my job and anybody who knocked me back then too bad. I hope they can pay their bills!

Elders won't tell you who have falsely accused you

having been a victim of this practice twice, i thought i would see if others had the same experience.

on one occassion, i was before the elders being told i was drunk on a certain day at a certain time.

( this was only brought up because when i was pushing for a meeting because of elder mr x adultery , i was threatened somethings would be brought out about me if i persued the meeting.

That is some story about the elderly sister DF’d unfairly. What a bunch of evil-minded people in the JW religion! This is why I always had a problem believing that in times of ‘persecution’ your so-called brothers would be there for you if they stooped to this kind of garbage during ‘good’ times.

I also fault the elders too quick to believe stories. Don’t they have any discernment? They know gossip is a terrible problem there.

I am also of the opinion that when somebody is ‘hated’ in the congregation, very often plain old envy is at the heart of it. Somebody there has a problem because Sister or Brother So-and-So appears to have a favorable situation (maybe money, education, brains, etc.) Witnesses are small minded and hold grudges over things like this even if the person didn’t actually ‘do’ anything.

I don’t miss this religion one bit.
