I agree with your post. The Witness religion SHOULD be providing the things you mentioned (soup kitchens, pantries etc. etc.) if it considers itself a charity, in my opinion.

This is all the more crucial at this time! So many JWs are in a bad predicament and needy today ironically because they followed the dictates of the religion to be out in the full-time ministry and were told not to bother worrying about having careers or retirement plans because ‘Armageddon’ was coming. I was there and remember it well.

It is a shame that needy JWs have to go to the churches of Christendom who DO provide these soup kitchens.

Was you or your family ever a local needs talk subject?

our family was always a topic on a local needs talk.

but it was funny when the brothers needed money they would come with their hands out.

this is when we lived in the states.

I remember those special needs talks, especially about dress.

I always felt they were instigated by frumpy older women and some elders’ wives who had an issue about attractive stylishly dressed women in the hall. If a woman had any kind of a decent figure (nice legs and/or an ample bust) she had to take special pains to hide things lest she be viewed as immodest. She might not even be trying to look sexy.

It was very unfair. Women with dowdy figures or no shape could dress any way they wanted and not be accused of looking a certain way. But, yet the woman with the nice figure had to try harder! 🙄

In person attendance

we got the inevitable letter today.. meet, associate and "encourage" in person unless sick or infirm.

also dress up for zoom if you must use it.

locally over half are on zoom, 3/4 no picture.

I’m not surprised they are urging for in-person attendance!

After two years of a pandemic with people being home on Zoom and people going their own way (some born-ins free of the oppressive meetings for the first time in their lives), the religion realizes it has lost some people. The Question is: how many? The Only way they are ever going to get a feel of how many consider themselves to STILL be JWs is to show up in person! Anybody who hates the damn place is not going to show up.

There is also the question of contributions and how some people are more inclined to give if they show up in person. Just my opinion.

Thank you. I’m flattered but I’m not a public person.

I also realize my type of story is less interesting than the experiences of the others you mentioned. I do agree that it is important because the general public may not be aware that this goes on in the Witness religion. There are probably millions of JWs as we speak who are suffering because they followed the bad advice that I ignored. Of course, people might say “nobody forced anybody”, but they don’t understand the culture of the JWs with shunning and so on. But, this only applies to adults. What about minor children under their parents’ rule? They are helpless.

Being reminded of this makes me grateful I wasn’t raised a JW and that I wasn’t a bigger fool than what I already was! I just wasted time but at least I was in the workforce then.

Hopefully, nowadays at least, there will be far fewer JWs who fall for this. We have this and other forums. Younger people are more sophisticated today and also if they look around their congregations they can discreetly check out some of these older Witnesses who listened to all the silly talk! That might tell them all they need to know.

That’s very nice of you to help this woman if you want to.

We all have exceptions to our own personal rules. I do myself. Maybe somebody was my friend back in the day and treated me like a human being - as opposed to others who acted like I either had a Scarlet ‘A’ or was Typhoid Mary. It’s scary that you say nobody in this woman’s congregation will help her - considering her age and condition.

Here all these gullible JWs believed they didn’t need to work like normal people - and led to believe ‘they will be taken care of’. Question: By who?..All the smoke and mirrors evaporated. Now that we all know the sad reality is a big fat zero is all the more reason I’m Glad I never listened to the religion

The problem with Witnesses though is that they blab. I’m sure it’s gotten out that you help this lady. I know it did with me years ago.

Also, how would you handle it if you are approached by other nervy JWs with an envelope looking for a handout because they know about this. I would be very rude and tell these JWs to get away from me. In fact, I’d rub it in their faces and tell them to go track down their ‘spiritual’ friends for money.

I was never impressed by convention experiences of people saying they gave up a college scholarship or a very lucrative job in order to pioneer.

What you didn’t hear about was when these people ran into difficulties a few years later and had to go back to work.

In my opinion, all these meetings and/or conventions where young JWs are only exposed to the religion’s view with no REAL world association are so bad. They don’t get to hear balanced, intelligent views of real life.

This is why it was priceless to have some exposure to non-JW family or friends who function in the real world..They were gritty but least they were honest. My young scatterbrained self was grateful for what they had to say and it prevented me from making a stupid mistake! ..If they were still living, I would go up to them and thank them with tears in my eyes for how they helped me.

Not to digress too much, but In another thread, there is the question of whether the writers of the articles are in reality. If they ARE, then they are deliberately painting a false picture of how things are - especially showing the average JW living in a big suburban home.

In Real life, somebody has to be making good money to live in a house like that, not earning minimum wage 🙄.

Thanks. If I hadn’t ‘helped myself’ by working all those years ago, I would be so screwed it wouldn’t be funny. NOBODY would be taking up a collection for me.. Imagine 🤣?

I cringe when I think of what could have happened if I fell for all the peer pressure in the religion. I even tried doing a ‘pioneer day’. Luckily, it was too tiring. I even cleaned a house (not for me). But, I credit the wisdom of my non-JW family for keeping me on the straight and narrow and holding onto my job, etc.

It’s scary to think of all the Witnesses who fell for this non-preparation for the future - not just retirement. It really does fly in the face of plain old common sense..Not just Proverbs talking about the lowly Ant but what about money being a ‘protection’? This would imply savings of some sort.

Sorry for anybody who threw common sense out the window and who followed the crowd there and is suffering today!

What I cannot wrap my head around is how so many Jehovah’s Witnesses over the decades literally ‘checked their brains at the door’ and decided they weren’t going to save money or provide for their future!

I can’t even respect this. Maybe it’s my non-JW upbringing (which saved me). Even IF some JWs saved (but wisely kept their traps shut) they would at least have something! But, it seems far too many JWs bought the equivalent of a bad investment tip and decided “hey what the hell..Armageddon’s coming so who needs a retirement plan? Let’s just go door-to-door..tra La La.”

I was knocked for my job..This is why I wouldn’t give anything now to these people who wouldn’t be caught dead in a full-time job and who acted like I was Typhoid Mary back then when I was busting my a$$ earning a living.

Let their ‘spiritual’ friends who invited them to those secret gatherings help them out OR brothers with businesses offer them a modest job.

It was also my observation when I was in the religion that some JWs just did not want to work. Period. One sister even told me she’d rather die than do what I did. 🙄 (I worked in an office.) ..I could probably write a small book on the stupid things said to me by arrogant people on their high horse when I was active in the religion. Well, I hope they can pay their bills today.

The reputation that I heard in general about other Witnesses was they were unreliable and looking for ‘Free’ this and that. To be truthful, the only ‘reliable’ Witnesses I saw there were most of the older retirees. The ‘baby boomer’ young pioneer types (who probably followed that infamous 1969 Awake article) were nothing more than deadbeats as far as I could see and I avoided them.

I really had no use for these people then (because they were so snide to me) and I have no desire to be around them now that they are reaping the consequences of forty+ years chasing a fantasy and not in the workforce.

Heavy equipment repair at 85 years of age?? Are you kidding me?? The average person (if lucky to still be living at 85) is usually retired over 20 years at this point with health issues.

It was largely unheard of to hear things like this and at least I can say I never heard of this until I read about it here on an ex-JW forum. Just when I thought I heard everything I hear something more outrageous. So, this is the fate of many Witnesses who suffer in silence and try to survive at advanced ages making a living. They are laboring like people from third-world countries when they live in a first-world country and this did Not have to be! No, this did not have to happen to them.

Thankfully, I never fell for this line of B.S. when they told me I should quit My job back in the day! I ignored them and was ostracized by all the ‘spiritual types’ instead. But, I’m Retired.

ROAD TO NOWHERE:

You can say that again! That’s why I’m Glad I’m nowhere near people in the religion..I’d have to run from people coming near Me with their envelope! Sorry, ain’t happening.
