Money donated for a specific reason

i decided to do this posting because of some comments in the post about pensions.

in the mid to late 1980's there was a flood and the local kingom hall was damaged and many of the friends homes were damaged...groups came in to help repair.

my then mother-in-law literally lost everything-she had no home to repair...she had been renting a small trailer and it washed away.

Yes, that’s right. You went to a grocery store and bought food economically and took it home to cook it.

I know I’m giving my age away, but I was never in an actual restaurant until I was in my teens! I always ate at home or over relatives houses. If somebody is really broke, they eat at home.. A few comments on this thread about people who gave money to JWs thinking they were ‘needy’ - only to hear they did something outrageous with the money - makes me hope these generous people learned their lesson!

In my experience and opinion, JWs are ingrates with a wrong sense of entitlement. Because many never really wanted to work and have no idea about money, they wrongly imagine and believe urban legends that a pile of money will be dropped on them.. I could never stand these people and especially nowadays I would run from them.

Because there is no infrastructure or department there for the care of the needy, any money given will go into a black hole. It’s not going to go to who you would wish it to.

That is very true and all the more reason I worked full-time and looked out for myself years ago when I was in the religion.

Besides, all I had to do was look around the hall at older people collecting THEIR pensions. Yeah, pioneer my a$$! I have No regrets about holding onto my job and anybody who knocked me back then too bad. I hope they can pay their bills!

Elders won't tell you who have falsely accused you

having been a victim of this practice twice, i thought i would see if others had the same experience.

on one occassion, i was before the elders being told i was drunk on a certain day at a certain time.

( this was only brought up because when i was pushing for a meeting because of elder mr x adultery , i was threatened somethings would be brought out about me if i persued the meeting.

That is some story about the elderly sister DF’d unfairly. What a bunch of evil-minded people in the JW religion! This is why I always had a problem believing that in times of ‘persecution’ your so-called brothers would be there for you if they stooped to this kind of garbage during ‘good’ times.

I also fault the elders too quick to believe stories. Don’t they have any discernment? They know gossip is a terrible problem there.

I am also of the opinion that when somebody is ‘hated’ in the congregation, very often plain old envy is at the heart of it. Somebody there has a problem because Sister or Brother So-and-So appears to have a favorable situation (maybe money, education, brains, etc.) Witnesses are small minded and hold grudges over things like this even if the person didn’t actually ‘do’ anything.

I don’t miss this religion one bit.

That just shows there is no department or infrastructure in the religion to address things like this.

You probably did the right thing to give your gift to a food bank. If it became known in the congregation that YOU had money to throw around, your name would be given out and you would have every Tom, Dick & Harry calling you and bothering you for all sorts of handouts. That’s what happens in JW land.

I am sorry that happened to you with that sister, but this is typical in the Witness religion. You went over and above it seems. But, people will take what they can get. There are too many users looking to get something for nothing and capitalize on getting people to feel sorry for them!

The problem is that today this type of thing would be even more prevalent there with the number of ‘needy’ in the religion and JWs panicked about hitting retirement age with no preparation. I always said there are probably more needy people in the JW religion than anywhere else because of the teachings of the religion knocking people getting decent jobs and careers.. Knowing what I know, I’d have to be nuts to go anywhere near the place.

Even though I’m out 21 years, I am glad I’m not there now. I couldn’t stand all the appeals for money and guilt trips (not that it would work on me anyway).

The way they hated me years ago because I had a full time job, didn’t pioneer or do favors for all the Users - they’d hate me now because I wouldn’t give handouts. It’s ironic. In fact, it would not surprise me if they become very hostile as time goes on to those who don’t want to give charity to those there who never wanted to work!

Sorry, I wasn’t really offended by you. Just the idea in general. And far too many JWs would have this idea!

Believe me, if I were active in the JW religion now and attending I would certainly be approached at some point on the topic of $. I would end up having unpleasant words with some Witness when I told them No. It might even get heated if they laid on the usual B.S. I’m not interested in anybody’s ‘sacrifice’ or a ‘brotherhood’. It was no brotherhood back when I was criticized for working..Not only that, JWs have selective memory loss about people being criticized for working - especially when they want something.

Even though the Bible says if you don’t work you don’t eat, the Witnesses conveniently ignore scriptures they don’t like.

As we know, the religion has no infrastructure in place to help anybody and I don’t believe for one minute they care what happens to anybody - whether it’s bethelites who got sent home or people in congregations who were in the full-time ministry and never bothered their pretty heads about important things like work and retirement savings.

Yes, these needy JWs who didn’t plan are as you say ‘at the mercy of others’ and their handouts.. I am just glad that I am not anywhere near them because I would not be left alone.

Look, the religion make a huge mistake when it told people for decades not to get decent jobs or careers.

Now there are too many JWs who are poor because they never prepared for retirement. The religion has no social programs whatsoever so naturally they are going to tell people to seek out relatives and social services.

When you say congregations ‘should take care of their own’ you must mean somebody going around with an envelope cornering people to give money. Well, I am somebody who was criticized for having a full-time job. I was shunned and not invited. If I had listened to the Witnesses I wouldn’t be Retired today. What makes you or anybody else think anybody has a right to pester ME for money for people there who never worked - after I got knocked for working?? And this would be constant and never ending.

Look! the ‘system’ there (if you want to call it that) - doesn’t work.

I’m glad I’m Out of the JW religion as I would never tolerate this garbage and the hypocrisy in this dysfunctional religion.

Welcome to the forum.

I agree with your post about telling the original poster that he is doing the right thing about caring for his dad.

I totally agree with you that the JW religion has no infrastructure in place for that or anything else for that matter! No social programs whatsoever…I will be the first to criticize about how they knocked college and careers and there are probably millions of JWs around who listened to bad advice and never planned for retirement. These needy Witnesses will need to seek out help from the churches of Christendom who have soup kitchens, pantries, etc.

But, to be real, while it would be nice for the ‘friends’ to stop by and say hello from time to time, it’s NOT anybody else’s responsibility to care for or to see to the needs of anybody’s elderly parents except the closest relatives. I’m not saying you are exactly suggesting that but I’m saying it for anybody else who may actually be thinking this because of fantasies and urban legends. And, if it’s a case of somebody senile who has no children or relatives then a phone call to the authorities is warranted. The state would have to step in.

Of course, this does not take into account children who were abused or kicked out of their home when they were young. I wouldn’t be taking care of any parent like that either.

Wow, what a betrayal by your former wife! Too bad she was stupid enough to do that plus leave you. Now, look at the circumstances she’s in!..Maybe somebody else might have thrown HER out first for her betrayal. And over what? Because you were doing the sensible thing and saving money for the future? The scriptures talk about ‘Money being a protection’. Well this implies savings of some sort.

As for those elders who took your worthless ‘privileges’ away, they deserved to have ended up in poverty. And so does anybody else there who pushed poverty (no, actually rammed it down the throats of sensible people there) and tried to punish those who they could not persuade. As far as I’m concerned, there are degrees of moral responsibility in the religion. Some felt it was only a suggestion that somebody ‘not plan for retirement but should pioneer’ and they believed in ‘live and let live’.

Any other self-righteous JWs there who did not believe in ‘live and let live’ who actively made trouble for JWs who DID plan (like myself) deserve to end up like the elders and your ex-wife described above.. They deserve NO pity..from anybody.

Regarding the elder who decided against work so he can be in the ministry (called ‘putting Jehovah first’) there are far TOO many people in the religion like this. The Witness religion is probably filled with more needy people per square inch than any other religion.

There are: pioneers ‘who didn’t count the cost’; bethelites who got kicked out; regular publishers with low paid jobs close-by so they won’t miss meetings; and finally the disturbed people with serious issues brought into the religion in recent decades to fill the empty seats in the hall.

You have a dwindling elderly population that are among the only responsible people there with maybe some younger people here and there with a decent job. And you imagine these people are going to be regularly hit up for money to give to the deadbeats above??

When you say that elder whines about tight finances and somebody gives him an envelope stuffed with money, let me assure you it would never be me that put anything in there!! If I had done what he did and never worked, do you imagine that anybody would be taking up a collection for ME? 🤣 Nope. I’m glad I’m long Out of the JW religion with the chaos and dysfunction and people with their hands out. 👎
