Does becoming (or remaining) one of Jehovah's Witnesses result in Poverty? Pew Research results differ from Watchtower claims.

"raised in the truth" during the 50s, 60s,and 70s i repeatedly read and heard from the platform how reading the magazines weekly "was the equivalent of a college education" and how many had turned their family economic situation around by being "trustworthy" and giving up expensive bad habits most "worldly people" had.

sounded good.. what is the reality?

how does avoiding higher education, and then spending up to 20 hours a week getting ready for, commuting, and then participating in meetings and field service affect family finances?.

I feel it is important to mention the change at the recent annual meeting of doing away with reporting hours for the R&F.. This ‘reporting of hours’ IS the reason why too many Jehovah’s Witnesses are in the state they are in!!! ..They were ‘scared’ into going out in the ministry full time or almost full time.. Armageddon was coming sooon!... Meanwhile, they should have had careers and paid into retirement.

But, the wonderful religion threw this hundred year old teaching out the window!!!! Poof! Thousands of Witnesses knocked themselves out for decades, lived on the edge and NOW are in senior years and in trouble!

I got knocked for working full-time years ago... But, I paid no mind and Retired when the time came.

After being ‘Faded’ all these years what do I read about but this latest change! ..How did I feel???.. I felt validated and SO glad I never listened.. But, I was angry at what could have happened to me if I caved in to all the pressure when I was young from older busybodies with cushy lives - most of whom are dead by now.

I have nothing but contempt for this awful religion and cannot believe anybody informed still goes there now in 2024!

My grandmother called my mother

so, i’m just posting this as a warning to lurking jws.

if you’re still on the fence, here is a story.. my grandmother, now in her 80s hasn’t talked to anyone in the family for over 20 years ever since my mother was the last one of her children that left ‘the truth’, she had sent my mother a card to never talk to her again.

so here we are 21 years later, she gets a call out of the blue that she needed help, she hadn’t been able to get into her kitchen.

It’s a good thing I’m ‘Faded’ from the religion many years.

I would never tolerate the predatory behavior you describe in addition to elders privately approaching people with an envelope asking for money for people there who never worked!.. I’d have to be out of my mind to set foot in a congregation!

Yes, shunning is evil and the consequences horrific. These elderly Witnesses who shunned their flesh and blood for decades now find themselves helpless and at the mercy of anybody who is around them! Let’s hope that person is not an opportunist!

I’m sure when they were younger and in the prime of life they felt confident in the religion’s teachings when they decided to shun their children who were DFd or just didn’t want the religion. They may have been cheered on by their friends in the hall. Problem is: where are these friends now? They may have passed away or moved out of the area.

All in all, very sad.

You both might be right.

But, I think these recent changes so close together are a reaction to too much recent bad publicity and the hemorrhaging of too many people from the religion.. It might just have been a matter the timing not being quite right that changes proposed years ago by anybody were rejected.

i’ve decided to disassociate from the jw organisation.

i cannot be part of a community that blatantly rejects the sacrifice of jesus in that demonic memorial ritual.

amazing what information you find when you start researching.. i’m writing my letter and posting it to the kingdom hall this morning.

The answer to this would be ‘NO’ if you are a member of the rest of the human race who are not members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. In fact, you would say “Good Riddance” as I did. I was not raised a JW.

But, if you are somebody born and raised as a JW who had practically No contact with anybody outside the religion, you might feel differently. In fact, the thought would bring panic. You might be financially dependent because of working for JWs or living in their housing, etc.

Those of us who (thankfully) were not raised in the ‘world’ of JWs who were able to associate with anybody we wanted, went to schools, worked in secular jobs, celebrated holidays and generally felt we were part of society and the human race around us - cannot fathom what it would be like to be cut off from these ‘wonderful’ people!

If you want to DA and have no friends in the JW religion or family members that mean anything to you, great!

Everybody’s circumstances are different. Most choose to ‘Fade’ because they want to maintain a relationship with people still in. But, things are different in the religion now and they will find themselves shunned anyway.

Years ago I decided to ‘Fade’ because I did not want any drama.. It was not about maintaining the few ‘friends’ I had. Thankfully, I had no family in the JWs and I worked.. In time, the few ‘friendships’ in the religion cooled off and have pretty much gone away.

This is no real loss because I have moved on myself and am realistic that in life you don’t necessarily remain friends with everybody you meet.. People move away, etc.. Maybe my Catholic/non-Witness upbringing along with my having worked has made me more down-to-earth in my outlook.

This is very sad and I am in agreement with DIOGENESISTER.

When I hear stories like this of elderly JWs putting trust in strangers in the religion instead of their OWN family, I get positively ill. ..I am so grateful I was not raised a Witness and have no family there.

At least I know by comparison my blood family are the only people who really cared about me.. It was a lesson I learned and will never forget.

Will your post help any lurking JWs to see what the REAL story is there and to not be fooled by urban legends?? I sincerely hope so!

You might have a point there!

This is corporate headquarters and they need everybody to ‘fit in’. Somebody from across the world is an ‘unknown’ to them and they might not want to take a chance!

Is everybody forgetting that we don’t know the reasons AM3 was removed? There is speculation he may have not been in agreement with the changes that were just implemented in the annual meeting.. Situations like this would possibly be more likely to occur in the future with somebody from elsewhere.

You are so correct in your reply to Rattigan. The Bible writers have also been long dead but what they wrote has touched countless people.

This is probably why the JW religion trashed old books, etc. because they don’t want anybody beating any of those dead horses! Especially when they caused so much damage.

Any JWs who acted on this teaching back in 1969 are senior citizens suffering this very day! ..It certainly doesn’t mean anything now that they got invited to special dinners and gatherings back then!!! ..What is particularly hurtful now is that the hourly time reporting fhey all knocked themselves out for has been discarded!!! I would feel positively ILL…

I'm grateful I wasn’t in the religion yet and wasn’t exposed to this harmful advice. And it is well worth it now that I got criticized because I held onto the job they all hated me for!

Broadcasts, Are they just a distraction?

the recent broad casts about not handing in time sheets, and then about beards, especially the beards, it seems so trivial, are those talks only released in order to distract the followers from the recent court case they lost on spain, from the csa cases, the kh sales and so on?.

i reckon they're taking their lead from the media, distract and divide tactics..

Does anybody care what you went through and if you’re suffering now as a result???

Faithful and gullible JWs screwed up their lives when they were young. No college or careers for them!! They were told ‘Armageddon was coming and they won’t need to worry about retirement’. Meanwhile all the older people in the congregation were collecting their pensions. I witnessed all this.

Those young pioneers wouldn’t be caught dead in a full time job like I had… When I heard about the changed teaching at the recent annual meeting that No more time needs to be reported - I was Glad that I never listened to any of the foolish talk all those years ago.
