  karen has just had a visit from her cult father.

  i heard about this some time ago.. on the booze tonight,so i am taping it and will watch it later...... .

  I, too, live in Canada; therefore, we are about six to eight months behind Coronation St. as it appears in the UK. I watched the first episode where Karen's fanatical father shows up unexpectedly. Wow!! You wouldn't believe the references to the Witness cultish way of bringing up children (without actually stating they were Witnesses). And the actor who plays Karen does a superb job as one who has a flood of bad memories invade her current life. Extremely well done, and perhaps only those who know suchlike religious cults can really relate. There's just one line I couldn't get and played the tape over and over again. Steve asks Karen, "You mean like the ones who go door to door...?" and Karen responds something like, "I haven't done that since I was fourteen." Did anyone else catch this line?

  Witnesses and alcoholism

  my jw husband has made me promise to let him die rather than approve a blood transfusion because of bible doctrine; however, the same bible speaks against alcoholism and drunkeness and yet he continues to drink and sometimes gets absolutely smashed.. last night we were at a non-jw staff party for my place of employment, and he lost any shred of dignity through his heavy drinking.

  we got home at 3 a.m. and he jumped out of bed at 8:20 and said, "i have to get to book study; i'm reading today.

  (it behooves me how he can do this time and again without even taking so much as an asparin!).

  I only have a moment to respond. Looking at the number of alcohol-related posts that have gone up since I asked the question of alcoholism in relation to JWs, it seems to be extremely widespread. I know alcoholism is in general; however, what I see from my devout JW husband is complete and daily use / abuse of alcohol. When he comes home from field service, he pours himself a drink before doing anything else. This at noon on a Saturday!

  I am thinking the use/abuse of alcohol within top-ranked MS and elder Witnesses is pretty rampant. Again, it slays me how they will make a big show out of their blood cards flashing in their wallets (they have so much faith they will die for it), and yet, behind closed doors, they are breaking another one of God's commandments .... the neither fornicators nor drunkards will inherit ... one.

  Everything is a public show with these blind sheep. They don't get that God exists and can see behind closed doors. How tragic for them.

  When I was still in the organization, I used to tell the elders how much he drank. I wanted and needed their help. I think they ignored me because I am a woman and it is not showing headship to complain about your husband. I don't think they really believed me because, after all, he is NEVER drunk at meetings. I believe they suspect he drinks a lot, but I know they didn't take me seriously when I asked for their help years ago when I was a faithful ministerial servant's wife.

  Last night we were at a non-JW staff party for my place of employment, and he lost any shred of dignity through his heavy drinking. (It behooves me how he can do this time and again without even taking so much as an asparin!)

  How many of you suffer because of alcoholism within your JW family members?

  How many married folks post here and your spouse does not know?

  i got to thinking about this, and how many are here without telling anyone.. my active wife does not know i post here.

  also, i have met some wonderful local people who are here, and you know who you are.. those who i met, i regard as friends, and very supportive.

  given our backgrounds we understand each other.. is this a double life?

  To those whose spouses don't know......if they found out do you think they would go running to the elders?

  The most absolute wonderful thing (aside from not attending mtgs and not having to fake field service) is that the elders have absolutely no hold on me whatsoever. I could care less about what they think. No pulling into little back rooms anymore, no little chats or arm-twisting comments; however, depending upon your circumstance (if you have NOT yet left the org completely), I can see where you must post on this board in a clandestine manner. I haven't told my JW husband because we have had a long while of peace about me leaving now and I don't want to stir the pot. I value my household peace.

  My JW husband does not know. I don't think he would understand posting to a site that has nothing to do with sexual affairs etc. (in other words, I think he would think there is a sexual side to all of this). He is not really computer literate and I believe he is at the point where it is easier to not question Watchtower ~ not that he ever questioned it, ever!

  I was thinking, too, how much I know about current happenings from reading these posts. Like the UN thing... I haven't mentioned it to him yet, but I will at some point. I think those in the flock are absolutely clueless about things we all now know for a certainty.

  I didn't even know that my sister was married yesterday.

  I totally understand the hurt and anger. I raised my JW husband's daughter from his first marriage (saving her life from anorexia) and I was kicked out of her wedding.

  These are the saddest, emptiest people on the face of the earth.

  I feel so angry!

  not really much point to this except i want to vent some anger but yesterday my little brother came round to my house for lunch, he is studying and living at the house of my jw sister, i myself have never been baptized so am not disfellowshipped but they all (with the exception of my little brother) treat me as though i where.. anyway, my little brother came round for lunch and the next thing my jw mum phones my house, asks to speak to my brother and gives him a telling off for being at my house because i'm bad association, and tells him that he has to spend more time with the members of the congregation.. he tries to explain to her that the members of the congregation don't want to know him, that he is sick of making an effort to be friendly with them when they just ignore him.. anyway, it finished with her telling him he is to go straight back to my sisters house and not see me again.. he is 24 years of age, surely its up to him if he wants to come to my house!.

  sorry, i know there is no point to this, but i just wanted to let off some steam!

  My observation is that many "faithful" witnesses do this type of thing to feel superior. After all, what else do they have? False doctines, no hope of true Christ-like behavior, no education ~ they are pathetic, empty people. My JW husband and I (I am disassociated) have been invited to a wedding this summer, but the non-JW girl's JW grandmother pulled the, "I won't go if Grace goes..." crap. Why? To feel superior because they are so empty inside. That's my take on it and I see it happening this way over and over again.

  microphones were the last straw

  it wasn't the big stuff that made me decide i could never go back, it was one little thing.

  i have been thinking about my journey out of "the truth", and i think i can pin-point the last straw.. .

  i had been out for years, but always thinking that if i got my head together someday i would be good enough to go back.

  I was not raised a JW, so education was very important. I remember once watching a 7-yr-old boy give a talk to the congregation... I had already had my M.Ed. degree (and I am a certified teacher!) and could not talk to the congregation simply because I am a woman... but this little inexperienced child could!

  Oh, the power of the male genitalia in Watchtower!
