  No compassion during Bible Study

  i was remembering today about a bible study an elder's wife took me on once (actually, her elder husband was the congregation overseer).

  after the chapter was over for that day (i think the knowledge book), the elder's wife asked when we could arrange the next study.

  the frail single mother of three evaded the question, and the elder's wife persisted.

  Outnfree hit the nail on the head. I remember this incident because the sister, who still has a terrific standing as a very righteous one in the congregation, skipped away from the house, got in the car, and immediately wrote down 1 1/2 hours for the study. I remember the phone calls I received from her Elder husband when I disassociated myself. The elders wanted to meet with me, of course, and I said over and over again, "You are not going to chastise me in my own household." I had abruptly gone from almost 100% meeting attendance to nothing. So, he called persistently and said things like, "We hate to lose you from the Christian congregation."

  I always knew the Christian congregation was not composed of suchlike ones.

  I was remembering today about a Bible Study an Elder's wife took me on once (actually, her Elder husband was the congregation overseer). After the chapter was over for that day (I think the Knowledge book), the Elder's wife asked when we could arrange the next study. The frail single mother of three evaded the question, and the Elder's wife persisted. Finally, the study said, "Well, to tell you the truth, I'm going into the hospital on Monday for a masectomy." The Elder's wife said, "So you won't be able to have a study next week, then?"

  Canadians will need a "Passport" to enter the US, starting next year

  i read that late next year, canadians who will want to go to the us, will need a passport.. it was so easy to go to the us in the past.

  now, when you cross the border, you need lots of id, and they even ask for you birth certificate.. but, late next year, canadians will need a passport to enter the us.. knowing this, i went to the post office to get a form to fill up, in order to get my canadian passport.

  i was surprised to see all those questions on that form.

  In looking at their website once again (http://www.knocking.org), the small print at the bottom says it is a federally funded program. Should this not concern us?

  Thanks to all who have replied since I posted this topic one hour ago. Winston Smith, in particular - your enlightenment helps us to reach out to PBS with strength and conviction. Let's flood PBS with soft enquiries. I like the point that our goal is not to stop the program; rather, to provide PBS a soft warning that they would not want to air a biased piece.

  I, myself, am posting here in a clandestine way because of my JW husband in the next room.

  I just "googled" PBS and, it appears, there is one PBS umbrella for all the stations (I could be wrong in this, but at first glance it appears so). I sent an email with my request that, if it is true that PBS plans on showing this program, that they may wish to interview ex-JWs because "I'm sure PBS would not want to be part of a propaganda campaign"; in other words, it would not be in PBS's best interest to air a program which is biased or one-sided. My email was short and to the point. I'll await my response from PBS.

  My point is this: if as many of us as possible email just to ask about it, then perhaps they will consider not showing something which has this much controversy. And, we know, untruth.

  I have been concerned since I read on a couple of posts about the pro-JW documentary which is in the works to be publicly aired on PBS. This is the website: http://www.knocking.org

  I studied the website, and it looks extremely favorable to Watchtower. I assume it will not present the side we all know to be true: the side that is shunning, hurtful, rips apart families, and is even dangerous. I know of people who have committed suicide because Watchtower got them so screwed up. And, judging by the response to my post on alcoholism and JWs, this is an issue unto itself.

  I suggest we all email various PBS stations to ask if they are, in fact, planning on broadcasting this documentary. If so, and they DO NOT PRESENT THE TRUTH OF WATCHTOWER by talking to ex-JW's, then I will be appealing to shows like 60 Minutes and other news magazine shows (both in the US and Canada) to tell the whole truth.

  I ask that each one of you who is equally disturbed by this pro-JW one-sided program to email PBS as well.

  Posting on this website is wonderful, and I thank the creators of this site; however, it is time we, as a collective, started taking action to teach the world the truth about this sadistic cult. Look at the members' directory on this site alone. Just by our sheer numbers we're a force to be reckoned with.

  karen has just had a visit from her cult father.

  i heard about this some time ago.. on the booze tonight,so i am taping it and will watch it later...... .

  Regarding the "Easter bonnet" thing, Karen (the character on the show) says that she used to. She also used to celebrate birthdays with her mom when she was little, then it all abruptly stopped. She uses clearly the word "disfellowshipped" and "the elders". She was clearly brought up as a Witness and now is suffering terribly as an unhappy adult. The only thing that is not right is the reference to "hell". But that is a subtle point: you would have to have once been in the organization to know this subtle difference.

  I, too, live in Canada; therefore, we are about six to eight months behind Coronation St. as it appears in the UK. I watched the first episode where Karen's fanatical father shows up unexpectedly. Wow!! You wouldn't believe the references to the Witness cultish way of bringing up children (without actually stating they were Witnesses). And the actor who plays Karen does a superb job as one who has a flood of bad memories invade her current life. Extremely well done, and perhaps only those who know suchlike religious cults can really relate. There's just one line I couldn't get and played the tape over and over again. Steve asks Karen, "You mean like the ones who go door to door...?" and Karen responds something like, "I haven't done that since I was fourteen." Did anyone else catch this line?
