for the last 40 years the idea that cholesterol (and saturated fats) clog up the arteries and cause heart disease has predominated yet hundreds of scientists and doctors now doubt whether this is indeed the case e.g.

half the people that suffer heart attacks have ?normal?

cholesterol levels.

The problem with "natural products" are that they are untested by any regulatory body.

Extrapolating benefits from one person is also unrealistic. Natural products like fruits and veggies is the best. Take a multi vitamin & an low dose aspirin a day is my "drug regimen".

My mother takes all sorts of herbs for everything under the sun. Shark cartiledge for this, black licorice for that, horny goat weed for this...We go round and round on this. Just as some people lament the medical industry is just trying to get your money....they will turn around and pay $ 200 a month to these quack pots for "natural cures".

Very true. If I had a son I would probably get him a bb gun to start with and work up from there around age 12 or 13. This is when I started learning about guns. But I think telling a 7 or 8 year old about a gun and how it's a no no, would only stoke their curiousity and possibly lead to an accident.

As part of my education I spent a fair amount of time in the ER. You would not believe the amount of GSW's we would see EVERY night. Drugs and alcohol usually played a part in all of them. Also, I can't tell you how many people I have worked on that failed in their attempt to blow their brains out w/ a gun to kill themselves. Alcohol, depression, and handgun in the house are deadly mixes. I also saw 2 different kids die because of playing with daddy's guns. Makes me physically sick still to remember those 2 events. I only spent a couple of years in the ER and saw this. A good friend of mine in Winston-Salem sees this stuff all the time. He's been in ER practice for 10 years.

Ok, first and foremost doctors do NOT make any money are prescribing statins...or any other meds for that matter. The industry have strict limits placed on what doctors can and cannot do. Once upon a time drug companies could leave small gifts or treat doctors to nice dinners once in awhile. Even that is now outlawed. In fact the clinic I work with we have rules against "any form of compensation, gift, favor, services, etc.." given to any medical personnel. So 99% of the doctors out there are really wanting to help you.

Amazing1914 summed up the whole experience quite nicely.

Please keep in mind about 1/2 or your health is genetic. The other half is lifestyle. So we have to concentrate on the 1/2 we can actually do something about. Nothing is perfect and you can find examples of someone with high cholesterol. Here is the guidelines for statins.........

The National Cholesterol Education Program's (NCEP) recommendations for medication therapy are based on cholesterol levels and the number of risk factors for heart disease.1 While these guidelines provide a good starting point for treatment, individual risk assessment is important to determine whether starting medication to lower your cholesterol is appropriate for you.

For people without known coronary artery disease (CAD) and with one or no risk factors for heart disease, medication may be started when:
? LDL is 190 mg/dL (4.91 mmol/L) or higher.
? The goal of medication is to lower LDL below 160 mg/dL (4.14 mmol/L).

When LDL cholesterol is between 160 mg/dL and 189 mg/dL (4.14 mmol/L and 4.91 mmol/L), medication may be considered. The goal is still to lower LDL cholesterol to below 160 mg/dL (4.14 mmol/L).

For people without known coronary artery disease, medication is considered when two or more cardiac risk factors are present, there is a 20% or less risk of developing symptomatic CAD within 10 years, and:
? LDL is 160 mg/dL (4.14 mmol/L) or higher and the 10-year risk is less than 10%.
? LDL is 130 mg/dL (3.36 mmol/L) or higher and the 10-year risk is between 10% and 20%.
? The goal of treatment with medication is to lower LDL below 130 mg/dL (3.36 mmol/L).

When LDL cholesterol is between 130 mg/dL and 160 mg/dL (3.36 mmol/L and 4.14 mmol/L), diet and exercise are usually emphasized. The goal is still to lower LDL cholesterol below 130 mg/dL (3.36 mmol/L).

For people with known coronary artery disease, diabetes, or more than a 20% risk of developing symptomatic CAD during the next 10 years, medication is considered when:
? LDL is 130 mg/dL (3.36 mmol/L) or higher.
? The goal of treatment with medication is to lower LDL to less than 100 mg/dL (2.58 mmol/L).

If the LDL cholesterol is between 100 mg/dL and 129 mg/dL (2.58 mmol/L and 3.36 mmol/L), diet and exercise may be tried, but medication may be started sooner if the person has coronary artery disease.

Risk factors you can control
? A high-saturated-fat, high-cholesterol diet, which may raise LDL cholesterol and lower HDL cholesterol
? Being overweight, which lowers HDL cholesterol and may raise LDL cholesterol
? Lack of regular exercise, which may raise LDL and lower HDL cholesterol
? Smoking, which may lower HDL cholesterol by as much as 15%
? Metabolic syndrome (abnormal findings related to the body's metabolism)

I believe you are spot on with that post. The constitution is "a guideline". IMHO you have to look at the document and then the historical events around it to see what we think the founding fathers were trying to imbue and then create more freedoms and protections not less. Slavery was ok with the original document, so as society changes so does the meaning of the constitution. It's a "living" document. This is why I go crazy when the fundie's start talking about "an activist" juriprudence system trying to determine what the constitution means today. Um, hello all the founding fathers are dead so it's all just a guess anyway. Just like guessing at the bible. No one seems to be ruling from upon high letting us know which part of the bible are out of date and which one's are to be followed. It's a fricking guide. Do you honestly thing the founding fathers thought beyond the document beyond about 100 years.... this was the first modern day democracy, an experiment. The document has been with us for almost 230 years.

I think your father was probably right in his desire to maim. However I have a couple of police friends who have related their first live "shooting" experience with the gun. They both said the first time they fired thier weapons was not what they thought it was going to be like. Their "training" took over. While I would like to think if there was an intruder in my house I could be calm enough to think that though, until we are faced with that situation, none of know how we will truly handle it. I do not keep any guns in my house at all anymore, since I have nieces and friends children in my house.... I would feel horrific if something happened.

i think i read somewhere that jw's believe that prayers said by anyone not babtized a jw are not heard by god?

is this true?

Unbaptised ones are not qualified to pray for others, so therefore someone else who is baptised will lead. Assuming there is a baptised male present, otherwise a baptised woman can lead the prayer if she is wearing a headcovering.

a while back i posted my experience about running into an old jw friend who revealed to me he had left the "borg" and told me all about why he had.

today he e-mailed me something he had written and i want to share it for the sake of those who are going thru something similar.

i think it helps to know that we're not alone in our turmoil.
