John Updike sometimes will make references of JWs in his writings; the one that comes up in my mind right now is a short story entitled "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and So Forth". He may mention more in some of his other novels or writing but I cant think of any specifics right now.

Fictional representations of Jehovah's Witnesses
by slimboyfat ini wonder if anyone has ever compiled a list of references to jehovah's witnesses in novels and other works of fiction.
i have been reading about research into mormonism focussing on how mormons have been represented over the years in works of fiction.
a similar project with jehovah's witnesses would be really fascinating.

LRGuy, sorry we missed you at the Dallas Sweatfest. Perhaps next time?
I wanted to go so bad! Was even planning on staying the same place you and Ballistic were staying but I had quite a bit going on at the time and more month at end of the money. Im planning on my trip to Europe this Sept. I'm trying to make plans for Joannadandy's birthday in MN early October but dont know if I can make it. We need more 'postates in Arkansas; Im sure there are some around here somewhere. I'm sure I have quite a few cousins DF'd but I dont know where they all live, even if they even still live in Arkansas.

If I dont find what Im looking for on ebay, I check out half.com; it's a division of ebay and the books are usually less than what a lot of used book sellers on amazon sell theirs for.

Jehovah's Witnesses are not a CULT ...
by Fatfreek inaccording to 30% of the following definitions.
that leaves 70% that show quite the opposite.
so -- are they a cult?
-
littlerockguy
I would say it is a cult but not according to what most people visualize in their mind when they think of the word "cult", or at least what I imagined when I would hear the word cult. I used to think of the Jim Jones tragedy and the Davidians and smaller groups of people and not organizations that looked like a mainstream religion from the outside. LRG

National Healthcare for the USA
by sammielee24 injust an fyi for anyone interested - there is a major drive on to push the bill forward for national healthcare in the usa.
you can sign the petition by going to http://www.onecarenow.org/.. it has gone through one part of the process last year and now the push is on to get it moved to the next level - it is backed by over 400 groups including the uaw i believe.
it is no longer if it happens, it is only a matter of time as to when it happens.

I'm going to be the "Ann Coulter" on this topic for saying: I personally would not want a nationalized system because being a single personI am already paying more than my share of taxes to provide services that I don't use. My heart doesn't really go out to the people with three kids that can't decide whether to eat or pay for health insurance. Perhaps they should have thought about that before they had three kids. It's all about lifestyle choices. Many people in the western world spend a lot of money on luxuries and call them necessities. So someone who can't afford health insurance for their kids probably has cable TV, a cell phone, and orders take away food a few times a month. Those little things add up.
I agree. And as far as accidents goes, the ones involved in creating those accidents should take on personal responsibility instead of relying ultimately on others to subsidize them.

My son is in love with a puzzle
by mrsjones5 inyesterday i bought my son (he's 2, soon to be 3 tomorrow) a $1 puzzle of united states.
i bought it because we have a much bigger floor puzzle of the us but it's too big for him to keep trying to put together, it gets in the way.
he instantly fell in love with the puzzle.

Hello Apostawriter Welcome to the forum. I have faded for about 8 years now, not DF'd or DA'd but moved away from my hometown to find out who I was and because I couldn't live like that anymore. I'm gay too. Look forward to hearing your story. Littlerockguy

Came out to my parents
by jstalin injust wanted to write about my experience in coming out to my parents in the last two weeks.
it's a long story, but my sister and i are both gay, but we haven't come out to our parents until now.
my sister and i have been debating with each other the best way to come out to them because we've known that it would be a serious blow to them.

Wow JTStalin
I haven't had that conversation with my parents yet, although Im pretty sure in the back of their minds they know. My parents have been divorced since 1979 but they both live about a couple of hours from where I live. Since I started to fade around the age of 30 and deal with getting out of the organization and moving away from where I lived so I can truly find out who I really was, in addition to admitting to myself I was gay, I never really wanted to confront that with other stuff I had to deal with. I dont have a steady boyfriend or partner right now (just a lover who I can only see about twice a year since he lives in Denmark in which both my parents met him and they really like him). They know he is married so I dont know if they know what kind of relationship we have. I'm sure I will eventually tell them once I settle down with somebody, if that even happens while they are still alive.
