we went to my husband's grandfather's funeral yesterday.

i'd already posted a few times on this subject, so not to bore anyone i'll quickly remind you of the story.

grandpa became ill and needed care.

Gill, such a sad situation for you and your grandfather.

Seems that JW's are able to rationalize everything. He's "asleep" so he has no knowledge of who's there at his funeral or not...or even if he has a funeral. We'll all throw a big party when we greet him at the resurrection. Though, I must say that even if such a hope was true and your grandpa resurrected, I'd hardly think he'd be in charity with your aunt and those who swiped his money, interred him in a home, and hardly bothered to visit him in his final months.

It's sickening how many JW's discard relatives and friends when they become infirm and then have a sactimonious memorial service after to show what a loving and caring bunch they really are. What a crock.

...my gran, who has been a jw since the 1950's will be reproved publicly for speaking to her grand-daughter who is disfellowshipped.

she is 77 years old and i am worried that it will be the death of her.

the"truth" has been her life for nearly fifty years and she is still a regular publisher.. if she continues to commit this gross sin she will be disfellowshipped.. her daughter and son in law are to be disfellowshipped for the terrible sin of allowing their daughter to live under their roof since she left her husband.

Oh my. Poor, poor lady. I'm so sorry, zaphod. Shame on them. I hope those elders in that congregation get their's some day.

There's an elderette in my first congregation that goes around purposely calling on disfellowshipped ones trying to encourage them. Her husband is the P.O. now too...he's a very, very meek man and I'm quite sure she's the head of that household. At any rate, everybody knows she does this and nobody has the guts to even discuss it with her. She deserves DFing by this standard 100x more than your poor gramma.

What's the last good fantasy or scifi book that you could'nt put down?

so what's the last fantasy/scifi book that you read that was just so good you could'nt put it down until you were done reading it?

i need a few recommendations, i'm in the mood for a good book.. for me the last really good scifi book was orson scott card's "ender's game".

for a long time i avoided this book because i thought it was aimed at a younger audience, but after hearing so many people praise it i finally took a chance on it.

I read a lot of sci fi/fantasy. Liked Ender's Game very much too. Love Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series and her Crystal Singer trilogy. I enjoy Simon Green's stuff (talk about demonic...very reminicant of the movie Keanu Reeves just did, what was that? Oh, Constantine). I like Kim Harrison's vampire-fighter books, Dead Witch Walking and....hrm, can't remember the second one. Tanith Lee's books. Latest one that I found very entertaining was Gail Dayton's Compass Rose (whoo boy, lots o' sex in that one). Can't remember the most recent book I read...oh, yeah, it was a rather poor werewolf thing. Most disappointing.

I never did completely stop reading what I liked as a JW, although I did avoid the vampire/demonic/totaly sex books. Still, I'm sure there would have been counseling if the elders had know what I did read. So disobediant.

Let's see. There's sucky amateur wrestling in a homemade ring in someone's backyard. There's Polish beauty pagents or whatever they are. I'm not totally sure cuz they're in Polish. There's this show that looks like a bunch of people getting together in one of those condo/townhouse recreation rooms that you can rent (school tile-floors, white walls, folding chairs...like that) and having a dance party. That's the bad ones that come to mind at the moment. Oh, oh...wait...there's dance recitals from some local dance school. Yikes! Poor kids. Bad costumes, awkward dances, little kids doing rather suggestive stuff. LOL Really, really bad.

Interesting new paragraph from the OD book

chapter 17 of the new organized to do jehovah's will is basically the revamped chapter from the previous edition.. .

the name of the chapter has changed from "enduring with life in view" to "stay close to jehovah's organization.

" in addition three paragraphs on pages 170-171 are completly new to this chapter which basically follow the jw doctrine of the trinity: obey god, jesus and the organization.. .

What did they all do on "worldly holidays" when you were home alone?

i always hated being alone on thanksgiving or christmas.

what bothered me was that if it were known you accepted an invitation by relatives it was frowned upon.

but what got to me was this: is god more pleased that i am home looking at four walls alone rather than being over somebody's house??

pisces, yes! I was always big into Halloween, making them costumes and innocently having a good time with it all....until I joined the borg. After we stopped, I used to take them out to dinner and a movie that night or go to a get-together with other single sisters and their kids. I do remember once staying home, ordering a pizza and sitting in the dark with candles, watching movies as we hid from the world and it's greedy, demon-inspired candy collecting...that was kind of fun. LOL

My eldest was about 8 when we stopped celebrating the evil and worldliness that is holidays. My youngest was 5 and very much his own person. After I sat them down and told them that this year would be our last for celebrating worldy, pagan-based, and nationalistic festivities (i.e...everything), his comment was, "It's not fair! He (his brother) got more time than me!! How about you and my brother don't celebrate, but I do?" Poor kid.

A Paduan, I think I understand where you are coming from, but I feel the same as EvilForce and kls. All those years of being known as a JW, all of the posturing I did as a part of God's only really true and pure and holy organization, all of the crap I put my boys through, my family through, myself through, only to discover it's a pack of half-truths wrapped in lies. I don't want to be identified in any way with them now.

Playing games at a wedding shower - is it wrong?

my daughter-in-law recently gave a very nice baby shower for her cousin.

the next day at the meeting she was called into the library and counselled for playing games.

i asked her what the basis was.

I hadn't been to a witness baby shower in years and years, so I can't remember what games they may or may not have played. Can't imagine the brothers getting their shorts in a twist over something so benign. Bunch of control freaks. Wonder which wife ran home complaining.

The last shower I went to was a wedding shower. I thought the bride-to-be was an absolute saint. The thing was held in a hall that was very warm with about 30+ sisters in attendance...so it was warm and LOUD. They pulled the sis into another room in order to dress her up in a paper wedding dress. It took at least an hour. When the poor girl finally came out, her face was beet red, she was perspiring, and she had to stand there in her lovely, paper tablecloth and napkin dress while a cute poem was read. Awww, how sweet. blech. By the time they got to the game where you break off a piece of thread and have to stand up and say nice things about the bride until your piece of string is completely wrapped around your finger, I'd had enough. LOL I made my excuses and left. Everybody was very nice and there was no anger, pointing fingers or upset (well, except for a Pioneer sis who'd just been removed from the list for speaking her mind too frankly...she also couldn't deal with anymore "fellowship" and left early with me), it was just too much and I couldn't stand to watch that sweet young sister suffer silently through all of the various bull any longer.

When you left the JW's, did you keep all your books & magazines?

i had a collection of older publications almost second to none.

along with the 30-year publications index, i felt invincible in the research department.. then i got disfellowshipped and divorced, and my ex kept them all.

" i couldn't tell her "for research" because that would have sounded like i was going to write a book exposing jw's, which would have made things even worse.

I have a few old publications that I found in my grandparents' attic after they died. They were brand new and had never been opened. My great grandfather, great grandmother and a couple of great aunts were faithful JW's til their death and used to send my grandparents the mags and some books. My grandmother was hugely opposed because she felt like they'd neglected my grandfather as a child (he left the farm in Ohio at 16 and moved to Chicago to make it on his own), and because when my great aunts died, both childless, they left everything to the WTS.

I boxed everything up and put it in storage. I might have to go take a look at some of those old books again.

What were your reasons for not liking the ministry school?

i dropped out years ago because i couldn't stand getting together with sisters i didn't like to do a talk.

i hated it with a passion!!

i do realize that you did learn but what i resented was that the sisters were inflicted on each other in a way that i don't think the brothers were.

I'd been on a competitive speaking/dramatics team in highschool, so I wasn't afraid of getting up in front of a crowd or writing my own material, so I didn't mind that part of it. I thought it was good for my kids to get a taste of having to speak in front of a crowd. The part I disliked was that as a single working mom, it seemed like I had at least one talk to prepare or help prepare every month and it got to be a real source of irritation.

I don't feel that anything I did up on the stage in the school taught me anything useful for field service. I got so that I could put together a talk in about 20 minutes with my partner usually acting as a householder in the door to door work (we'd go over her part by arriving at the Hall 15 minutes early and practicing a couple of times in the bathroom). LOL It was soooo easy to only write like maybe two questions for her to "ask" me, have her read scriptures or make logical answers to my condescending witnessy questions and then wrap it up with either a yes to a Bible study or at least coming back the next week. I was such a slacker.
