Vidiot: Your comments are right on. For WT to acknowledge the mistakes of the past is not going to happen. Just like all giant corporations do when caught breaking the law, they'd rather acknowledge liability by paying huge court-ordered judgments than admit responsibility.

Freegirl2006: My husband Joe told the other elders in the congregation basically just what you said, "If we have the "Truth," why should we fear what we will hear on Dateline?" Well, although it took time for you to break free, revelation after revelation proved that I spoke the truth.

Since 2002, WT has fixed little if anything. They patch policies such as found in their Oct. 1, 2012 BOE letter, which is not helping them, but making the religion look positively sick and twisted. This is causing an exodus of ethical and moral people who don't want to be JWs any longer, no matter even if they still believe in the fairytale future that they were once taught. But there are thousands of former JWs like you who know better.

“Brooklyn Girl”

In May of 2001, I attended a small conference in Soap Lake, Washington, where some thirty former Jehovah’s Witnesses (JWs) were gathered. The conference was sponsored by the late Richard Rawe. Richard was part of a group of former JWs who met once a year since the early 1980s to discuss Bible doctrines and other subjects related to their former religion.

In March of 2001, I had been interviewed for a TV documentary to be shown on NBC’s Dateline program which would reveal a cover-up by JWs leaders of child sexual abuse carried out by Witness molesters.

I first learned about this problem in 1992 when I was a staff member of the Writing Department working inside the Watchtower’s world headquarters in Brooklyn, NY.

The Dateline TV documentary was thought to air a few months after the interview but it was not broadcast until over a year later on May 28, 2002. Because of not knowing when the documentary would be shown, those in attendance at the conference agreed to keep my name confidential until I came out publicly with my accusations on Dateline.

While at the Soap Lake conference, I spoke to the audience a number of times. One of my talks was about the “Brooklyn Girl” which was recorded on audio tape (11:00 minutes). You can now listen to it on the audio link provided on my website, http://watchtowerdocuments.org/brooklyn-girl/

During the introduction you will hear me discuss Rabbi Baruch Lanner who was a Jewish educator and an official of the National Conference of Synagogue Youth (NCSY). NCSY was a youth group run by the Orthodox Union, the central communal organization of Orthodox Judaism.

Rabbi Lanner had physically, sexually and emotionally abused kids in the group for over three decades. Throughout his tenure at NCSY, the organization had received numerous complaints about the rabbi but did little to investigate the accusations. Nor did they do anything to control Lanner’s behavior – let alone take action to bar him from working with children.

“But why didn’t they?” you ask. Because the goal was recruitment of non-orthodox young Jews to bring them to Jewish orthodoxy and Lanner was immensely successful in his mission.

This is exactly what the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society was guilty of doing. Over six decades or more, Watchtower leaders around the world had received thousands and thousands of reports and complaints of abuse of children; yet, little or nothing was done to put kids’ interests first. Below find information coming directly from a representative of the Charity Commission in answer to the question about mandatory reporting in the UK and should for all practical purposes be recognized as an expert's reply.

BTW, I noted that the information in the post below is similar to what has already been posted on this subject already. This means we have experts among us who knew what they were talking about in their posts regarding this subject. So I'm giving them a :-) !

There is no mandatory reporting in the UK although there is in Ireland. It's therefore open to individual groups and charities to decide whether or not they want to have voluntary mandatory reporting. A good example in the UK is the Catholic Church in England and Wales, which does and, by way of contrast, the Church of England does not. There are however requirements under charity law here for the trustees of a charity to take reasonable steps to ensure that the people they work with aren't exposed to undue risk - this is where we site safeguarding. The question is: if you are not reporting to the police, how are you identifying and managing risk?

A Jehovah’s Witnesses elder in Australia was put behind bars last week for sexually abusing minors, according to The West Australian.

Over seven years, David Frank Pople sexually assaulted two teenage boys he met through a congregation near Perth. One of his victims told elders about the abuse in 1997, but no one notified police until one of the victims filed a report in 2014. Pople pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in prison.

The details of Pople’s story mirror those of other abuse cases involving Jehovah’s Witnesses around the world. Elders failed to report child sexual abuse to secular authorities. The perpetrator was kicked out of the organization, only to be reinstated later.

Moreover, the story fits a pattern of Jehovah’s Witnesses leaders ejecting members who abuse children, not for the abuse, but for failing to show adequate repentance.

(I can't remember when a journalist has ever touched on this very important point, one which most JWs don't understand. Barbara)

The Awake! editor back in 1992 told me that as far as he was concerned it appeared like the GB rewarded Freddie by making him president in 1977 two years after the 1975 fiasco which he was responsible for that cause 500,000 members to leave the JW organization.

So it would appear that Freddie wasn't the only one insane at WT headquarters.

Yes, Freddie had a fabulous memory. When he was almost blind, I remember at a Gilead graduation, another of the GB walked him out on the stage to the microphone where he gave a long, long talk which contained many scriptures that he quoted from memory. We'd follow him along in the Bible and he never missed a word.

I spoke to Freddie a number of times in the mid 1980's before he went completely blind. He would walk to the office building from where he lived holding on to the arm of a young Bethelite to guide him and keep him stable and from tripping, etc. When I'd walk by him, he could make out that I was female and would begin to talk to me. Even In his old age, he was humorous and liked to joke around. He especially liked to tease me, although almost blind. If he could see, he probably wouldn't have wanted to tease me. ;-)

I never saw any genius in him, but in his old age I think he had lost the desire and probably the ability to discuss "the deeper things" of the Bible. Around 1990-91, when he was quite feeble and living on the Infirmary Floor in the Towers building where the medical staff could look after him, the Writing Dept. gave him a small tape-recording machine to keep him occupied and he'd record ideas for articles and talks. One of the staff told me nobody listened to his recordings, but erased the tape and gave it back to him. I felt sad for him back then.

Back in 1960, Joe and I were talking to Freddie at pre-convention work in Miami. Even then he wouldn't talk about any serious subject. He was a short man who at that time wore very wide, loud, eye-catching ties and enjoyed laughing at himself and his outlandish taste.

In 1966, in Mexico City at a convention, Freddie showed up on the platform wearing a very wide, black and silver sombrero just to get us all to laugh. We noticed during his convention talk, he never looked at any notes.

I do know that Freddie was his own man who did his own thing. I remember being told that he had a close friend in California that he'd visit on vacation almost every year when he was able to. The interesting thing about the man who he'd visit, a former wrestler, was that he was disfellowshipped but that didn't seem to matter to Freddie.

A few years ago, I was told by a reporter, who at one time worked for the Times magazine, an interesting story. This reporter interviewed Franz when he became president of the WTB&TS in 1977 which story did appear in the Times. He said to me that in all his years as a reporter interviewing "important" people, after spending one hour with Freddie, he came away with the impression that Fred Franz was "certifiable insane."

"Yes, I'm aware the victims numbered into the teens but documents were seemingly destroyed. All I have to go on is my father's word back then that the victims were plentiful.

And none that we could find were within the statute of limitations. Ronnie has made attempts to be around small children near his home but authorities warned him and left it at that."
