I was allowed to have my ears pierced when I turned 16. After I left a year later I had them pierced 2 more times. After my divorce I got a tatoo! My daughter says I'm regressing as I get older. What's wrong with that?

this may sound strange, but do jws have any specific teachings on body piercings?
i know that mormons do... they only allow females to have one piercing in each ear and then they must wear "tasteful, modest earrings"... in other words, i don't think they're wearing big hoops or dangling chandalier earrings... but what do jws think about piercings?
my boyfriend's sister got her eyebrow pierced... and her "jw" parents encouraged it.

sorry to pose this question if it is here on the board somewhere.
i have been sifting for hours and even though i've found lots of great information, i can't find what i am looking for.. motivated by the hurricane tragedies, i decided to become a red cross volunteer on a local level.
i had my first training on saturday and came away feeling very good about my decision.
I used to do alot of work with the Red Cross diaster team. Was there for the OK City bombing, and alot of other natural diasters. I still help with blood drives.

my wife attended the special assembly day this last sunday.
here are some interesting points.. 1. attendance was 700.
(typically, attendance tops 1000).
Thinking of that assembly hall in St. Louis is like a blast from the past. I used to go with my stepdad when it was being built. He was an electrician and gave up many hours there. I used to get into alot of trouble during assemblies there for flirting! (or just smiling and laughing with a guy.) I got baptized there, too. Boy, would I love to go and picket there!!

What circuit were ya'll in??
.
although i am pleased when i hear about children of dubs who are pursuing sports at the high school, college and professionally level, it also disturbs me that so many of us in the past lost out on these opportunities because of the rigid views of the dubdum.. a friend of mine that is still active says that many of these changes or new light occurrs because thinking dubs stand up to the elders and make these personal decisions for their family without the advice of elders.. do you ever feel that you should/could stand up for your beliefs even when they are against the advice of elders, eventually you could inspire change within the religion?.
i ask because through out history change has ocurred because of standing up to those in authority.. examples, gandi, martin luther king, susan b. anthony to name just a few.. what are your thoughts?.
I wish that when I was in that anyone would have stood up to the elders, but in our congregation-- NO ONE would. They even held the normally Thursday nite meetings on Friday nites. They did that so that no one could have a chance to participate in school activities/sports held on Friday nites.
I left the JWs before my senior year in high school. The next year I joined everything I could join. The next year when I made college cheerleader my parents about stroked out!!
For the sake of today's JW youth, I hope more get to enjoy sports. More parents need to stand up for their kids!

.
since i'm relatively healthy, don't smoke, hardly drink (2 beers a day), and if i base myself on my grandparents and parents age, i think that i should live up to anywhere between 85 and 95. which means i should have another 40 to 50 years of posting here.
.
Since they say "the good die young" I figure I'll be here for a VERY long time. Plus, I'm just getting started since my granddaughter was born. PAYBACK time!!!!

just a brief introduction to get me started.
i am still one of jehovah's witnesses although delicately extricating myself from this complicated situation.
i have family to be concerned about, and this still binds me to the religion like a fragile cobweb.. i wonder that the jw paranoia of harry potter was what initially piqued my interest?
Glad you found us Severus!! Look forward to getting to know you!! I LOVE all the Harry Potter, and especially Lord of the Rings trilogy!!! But then, magic is part of my daily life one way or another!

ive been on the board a little over six months.
before coming here i would tell people: i can be surprised, but never shocked.
thats no longer true after reading through the topics and comments.
By the time they have you "really" believing, and doing everything from reading and studying the literature, service, meetings, etc. --most people are taught to be in "awe" of the elders. It isn't until they actually insert themselves in your life, usually because you are doing something to displease them (not necessarily the organization).
I know the elders in Moberly, MO were just like the gestopo/nazi's. ANYTIME I got in trouble at home (i.e. valentine card from a boy in Jr. High, lying to my parents....) an elder's meeting always followed. It's like they raised me and handed out punishment. When I found out I had a biological dad and got to meet him, finally. My parents told me it was up to me if I wanted to get to know him or not. After I decided I did, my stepdad and the elders decided that I COULDN"T. Several years later, I went one step farther and ran away from home and went to him.
My mom would go to the elder's because of the way my stepdad treated her. They NEVER gave her encouragement...always ran her down. Several yeard ago when she got reinstated, she refused to meet with the original DF'ing elders. And they didn't make her.
JW's tend to put the elders on a pedistal and never challenge them. Most let the power and prestige go to their heads, and thrive on making examples of anyone that does question them.
For some reason,DUH, this subject gets me blood boiling.......they destroy lives and families on their OPINION!!

amount of money you put into the contribution boxes at the kh??
i was just thinking about that.
i rarely gave anything, a couple dollars for the kids to put in.
My stepdad would usually write a $100.00 check and let one of my little sisters or brother "drop" it in the box-- after letting them make a BIG production about it.

we shall walk in the name of jehovah our god.
" you will note that the new world translation of the holy scriptures says that they were "by divine providence called christians.
they were just living "normal" lives!
Thanks for the "vomit alert"--but I think it needed to be alot sooner. I see that crap and can't for the life of me think that I once believed that. It's even sader to think ssoooo many seemingly "smart" people can swallow that garbage. That includes my parents.
*LMAO while reaching for the vomit bag!*
