Great responses all! I had a great laugh reading some of your accounts.
@ NewChapter - They no longer announce DA's or DF's? How does the congregation know to shun you?
good morning all,.
i have had the opportunity over the last couple of years to speak with a couple of jw's who had either attended the same congregation i did or were married to someone who to the same one.
for the record, i disassociated myself in 1992 due to being followed around by an elder or two who had heard that i had ray franz's "crisis of conscience" in my possession.

I also was told that I wanted to run for state office so I could submit a bill to outlaw the Society which would make me help fulfill a bible prophecy. That really was funny.

Good morning all,
I have had the opportunity over the last couple of years to speak with a couple of JW's who had either attended the same congregation I did or were married to someone who to the same one. For the record, I disassociated myself in 1992 due to being followed around by an elder or two who had heard that I had Ray Franz's "Crisis of Conscience" in my possession.
Here is what I have been told.
1. I forced my family to sit in a locked room while I read aloud apostate propaganda.
2. I decided that visiting gentlemen’s clubs and other places of ill repute were more important than serving Jehovah. (for the record, I have visited a gentlemen'c club 3 times in my life)
3. I wanted to start my own religion so I could control folks.
4. A demon entered me causing me to have urges to hurt or kill Jehovah's people.
I found these quite humorous and it just reminded me how the JW gossip machine gets going once someone leaves or is disfellowshipped.
What rumors have you heard about yourself since your enlightenment?
Donny
pastor russell had 20 million readers of his newspaper columns worldwide and as many eager students of his topical bible study, studies in the scriptures.. he advertised for 1000 preachers to sell his books door to door!.
the photo drama of creation wowed 9 million people in the early 1914 synchronizing film, hand colored frames and phonograph recordings.. state of the art!.
judge rutherford availed himself of victrola recordings of "religion is a snare and a racket!
Terry I too remember that strange old dude Gene Scott. I was working a 2nd shift in 1983-85 and when I would get home at 11:45 pm, his show would be on for the next few hours. Even though it was against JW rules to watch this stuff, I found it interesting and humorous how this old guy would sit back in a chair and smoke cigars and yell for folks to send him money. It was great entertainment.
i had been a straight a student.
i had a prodigious memory for facts, dates, quotes.
i once recited the entire rime of the ancient mariner in english class.
Great post as usual Terry.
But I have a question. How can you blame the Society for your death as an intellectual when Slave member Anthony Morris declares Jehovah's Witnesses to be "The Thinkingest People On The Planet ."

are you moving on?.
i see some have a very hard time in life because of their witness past..
Not ruined but it was seriously jacked up for a while. It was very difficult at first dealing with several fists punching you in the gut.
1. Realizing that this organization you had beleived in in just a sham
2. Having to deal with a vindictive ex-wife who was tring to get our kids to distance themselves from me because I was going to be destroyed in Armageddon.
3. Having virtually all of your "friends" shun you simply because you can but into the teachings 100%.
4. Hearing all of the lies now being spread about you in the congregation.
during my recent trip to dallas, i stopped by an old haunt, half-price bookstore, and picked up jermaine jacksons book "you are not alone - michael: through a brothers eyes.
" it has several interesting observations, but one of them has me puzzled.
on page 204 jermaine is describing a mural that michael had painted on one of the walls.
Thanks for the updates. I always thought it was weird how much into JW's the mother and Michael seemed to be yet they did Christmas songs. The book is quite an interesting read and you can tell Michael always struggled with being a Witness.

It has several interesting observations, but one of them has me puzzled. On page 204 Jermaine is describing a mural that Michael had painted on one of the walls. Jermaine states "Inside, a painted mural fills one wall. It is a green forest scene with a cartoon version of Michael perched on a tree reading a green book with a title 'The Secret of Life' - required reading for Jehovah's Witnesses." I do not recall this publication? What is it and why was it "required reading for Jehovah's Witnesses?" Donny
sorry if anyone has already posted on this but i did not see anything related in the few pages of active topics i checked.. last saturday i went to an oil change facilty and one of their perks is they give you a copy of the current usa today while you wait in your car.
on page 8a is a full page ad titled "liberty of conscience threatened.... a national sunday law will be established as the mark of the beast.".
the article then goes on a typical adventist rant about how saturday, not sunday, is the real sabbath established by god.
Thanks for the update and the point on the ad misquoting the NWT. Since the ad had made the effort to quote it, I did not even look to verify its accuracy. However someone who wrote the ad must have had one lying around as this version is rarely quoted for support of anything outside of JW circles.
i just wanted to take a survey.
let's not let this get into the same old same old debate of atheism vs belief.
just respond with "atheist" or "believer" or "maybe god exists".
Agnostic atheist. For a year or two I first tried the "traditional" Christianity route after I left the JW's, but I eventually woke up and realized that all religion is just mans way of trying to explain the unexplainable.
