  I don't think you were attacking me at all. As far as how I would have done things differently while abiding by the laws of nature, if you mean that if I were God, I would not have created a world which played host to natural disasters in the first place. An all-powerful being surely could have created a safer place for us to populate. If there were no natural disasters, God's alleged omnipotency wouldn't be an issue.

  Could this alleged god be something other than what's depicted in the Bible? Of course he could be, but the fact still remains that he's yet to let himself be known, so no one can answer that question. I know if I were the creator and knew there was some book circulating the globe spreading libel against me, I would put a stop to it.

  All morning it's been showing some idiot standing in the middle of the street getting pummelled by debris. How is this news? All they're doing is using shock value to get dummies like me to watch. He just got done standing there going "Whoa!" for five minutes straight before finally taking cover. Little else was being said.

  I hope everyone down south keeps their bearings and stays out of the street. It looks like it's getting really bad now.

  Especially since humans knowingly moved into a zone that is below sea level. And then on top of that, altered the river and marshes to move more people into those areas.

  In this case, you're probably right. When New Orleans was settled there were plenty of other places to go. But then you have to take into account political boundaries since it was the property of France, but I suppose humans in general were to blame.

  What I have a problem with is when people blame humans for populating disastrous areas in general when most of the "habitable" areas of Earth are disastrous at one time or another. I don't expect some Sky Daddy to save us, because if he did exist I don't think he would have created natural disasters in the first place or expect us to lump together into small safe zones.

  So, if there is a god, he didn't make very good preparations.

  Isn't it fascinating how people who doubt the exixtence of God still look to blame him anyway? It's soooooo good to have a scapegoat.

  A scapegoat for what exactly? You didn't refute any of my points. If we are to be held accountable for being hit by natural disasters, regardless of whom or what created them, where do you propose we put everyone? I guess we could congregate in the African Savannah. Who needs those pecky elephants and rhinos. But wait, doesn't much of that flood every year? I think those mountain gorillas have it too good. Get rid of them and we'd have more space to live. Or we could tear down the rain forests of South America. Uh oh, that floods too. Eh, the heck with the Amazon river. We could dam that sucker and wipe everything out, or simply move to higher land and wipe everything out. Hey, at least we'd be safe from natural disasters.

  All I'm saying is that if God made himself known to the world, he would have to be accountable for the world that he created. It is in no way ideal for human habitation.

  i always thought, when reading the bible, that the commandment "thou shall not kill" made no sense.

  after all, the god who supposely gave it commanded his own people to kill.

  so i wonder, did that god actually mean, "thou shall not murder?

  Remember the story of Jericho where God, in all his love, told the Israelites to tear down its walls and massacre the entire city?

  God doesn't punish innocent people, what are you referring to here?

  I guess that depends on how you define innocent. I'd consider the murder of the first born of Egypt, even infants, to be punishing the innocent. I'd also consider killing everyone on earth, men, women, and children, with a giant flood punishing the innocent. What about the children of Sodom and Gomorrah? What about Lot's wife? The poor woman was probably panic stricken and glanced at the city with a reflex action, and merciful Jehovah turned her into a condiment.

  I'm sure that God has a different definition of innocent, but I don't agree with it myself.

  It's also his fault that he didn't physically move the settlers when they started to settle there.

  I suppose if God believes without a doubt that destructive natural disasters are necessary, he could have lumped us all into the few safe zones of Earth where we could come up with all kinds of new diseases. Sounds fun!

  I wonder how many of those that are blaming God for not looking after things properly have children of their own?

  Speaking for myself, I'm not necessarily blaming God because I doubt his existence, but I'm questioning those who believe in God and are blaiming us for populating his earth per his request.

  I don't have children yet, but if I do I'm not going to shoot rockets at their homes and say, "Wait! Don't you know that I randomly shoot rockets at this entire region? You should have moved to Canada."

  Man built a city in a low lying area, in full knowlege of the pre existing weather systems

  I think we should discuss this in further detail. I've always wondered why people throughout the world build and rebuild in areas that are known for natural disasters. Could it be in many cases (not all) that they have nowhere else to go? Their resources are limited? You have to admit, if everyone on this planet congregated in areas which don't have natural disasters, we'd be stacked on top of one another and sleeping in little cubicles like The Fifth Element. Southern California is known for its unpredictable earthquakes. Where are the millions of people from Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, as well as smaller towns supposed to go? What about the entire nation of Japan? It has so many earthquakes and tidal waves that we've adopted the word tsunami from them. China? Indonesia? The southern United States? Tornado Alley of the mid west? The Caribbean? Some of the most populated areas on earth are riddled with natural disasters. The question is whether or not we have a choice to populate certain areas. I don't think so. We're getting cramped as it is, and abandoning entire regions and nations would be even more disastrous. We'd see more wars and famine than ever. I'm lucky enough to live in an area of the US that's fairly safe. We may see the remnants of a hurricane now and then, but I've never seen anything major in my lifetime. If everyone from the U.S. alone congregated in such areas it would be a nightmare. Since much of our produce is grown in the mid west and California, where would we get our food if these areas were abandoned?

  So how come some people want to blame God??

  Wasn't he the one who told us to be fruitful and multiply? Well, we listened. Every continent on Earth has natural disasters of some sort, and we have to live somewhere, don't we? So, why did God create these disasters in the first place if he wanted us to populate the earth? There seems to be far more unsafe places to live than safe, and many areas are not habitable at all. Maybe floods could be prevented in some areas given the proper resources, but the rest of it is up to Mother Nature. I doubt we'll ever see the day when we can harness the power of a hurricane or still the ground during an earthquake. At least not in our lifetime.

  Thanks, prophecor, I slept fairly well aside from all the crazy dreams.

  I didn't mean to come down on your beliefs, but I get frustrated when I can't understand people's motiviation for believing certain things (and those margaritas were a little strong). That's something that I need to work on. Maybe deep down I still believe in God and have issues with him.

  Had those been blessed with the available technology that is still in it's infancy today, people may not have had to suffer the destructive forces of nature. Sattelite imaging, seizemic reading for the potential for earth quakes, even the Tsunami of a year ago or so that wiped life out on such a grand scale, could've been lessened due to the fact that there were warnings as to the Tsunami's destructive power that could've been sounded, but because of business & industry not wanting to cause a potential shortfall financially, in the event that there was not as big a problem as they would've believed to be, in thier limited reasoning, several more thousands of people were killed as a result of human greed.

  Wow. Okay. If I'm getting the gist of your post, you believe that if we were as technologically advanced back when these things took place as we are today, loss of life would not have been as severe. Then you seem to gradually progress to modern times where human greed is the catalyst for us not being able to prevent natural disasters.

  In other words, you're STILL BLAMING THE HUMAN RACE for people dying in natural disasters, past and present, even though you claim there is a higher power who could have prevented them from taking place (and who conveniently created them in the first place).

  When are you going to sniff the smelling salts and realize that HUMANS did not create the things which cause natural disasters? I'm not saying that some archaic god did, but we CERTAINLY did not. Tell me, how did we ever cause an earthquake to take place? A tsunami? A hurricane? A tornado? A volcanic eruption? I'm sorry, but as I see it, you seem to be desperately defending your belief system. You are not taking the actions of your alleged god into accountability. You are not looking at the bigger picture.

  All I'm trying to say is, we should give credit where credit is due. If your belief system says that there is some all-powerful being which created everything, good and bad, then give this being credit. Quit trying to pawn his imperfections off on the rest of us. Regardless of our technology and when it came into existence, planet Earth has always been f'ed up in one way or another. Tell your perfect god that he made a boo boo or two.
