OMG! LOL!! Tom Cruise did it, therefore its a good idea? LOL LOL!!
Seriously though, movie star endorsements in the field of medicine are just creepy these days.

is homeopathy ( the treatment of a disease using, in small doses, drugs that produce symtoms like those of the disease so that one's natural immune system can fight off the disease ) popular among active jw's ?

his jw mother is treating him with homeopathy, as is a so called doctor.

'Faith' that's another word for ignorance, isn't it? I never understood how people could be so proud of believing in something with no proof at all. Like that's an achievement.

jayhawk1, good catch! Iridology and reflexology are both wonderful examples of quackery as well. Both are popular among JWs (and others).

jayhawk1, generally, I'm objecting to non-evidence based medicine. Specifically, this would include homeopathy, naturopathy, chiropractic medicine and other alternative therapies. This would also include most of the vitamin and supplement industry (which ironically, is now being backed by big pharma). All of my criticisms are based on evidence, but specifically, the topic this thread started on, homeopathy, is one of my favorite quack fields.

wednesday, the issue comes down to, how do you determine if something is true or not? Do you ask a bunch of people their opinions? Is there a more methodical approach that can yield better results?
This approach is used when confirming psychics or astrology. People remember the hits and forget the misses. People have observational biases. Eliminating the "human" factor from this sort of investigation has shown to be the best approach we currently have.
In the end, its not the results of scientific medicine that is important, rather, its the method. The method has saved us from the countless quackery that used to be peddled. In a historical context, quackery is at a low, however, there are still many people who subscribe to the method of truth-testing. I can personally related to this flaw in thinking. (As everyone else here can)

The common theme here of course being, people prefer stories to statistics.
"Did you see the news last night! Did you see that crime! I *know* the end is so close!"
The reasoning is frighteningly similar.

Ginkgo is often marketed as a memory aid, and it was in that context I was calling it useless. I should have been more clear. I don't know anything about its uses as an anti-depressant. I look forward to the studies you'd like to show me.

Mary, unfortunately, regulation does not equal efficacy. Insanely, the EU just expanded their qualifications for "medicine" to include things that have prior claims of working, but no real proven efficacy. The nonsense duo of echinacea and ginkgo biloba are regulated by the FDA, despite their being useless.

zensim, you don't have to buy Randi's explanation but you should. Homeopathy contradicts all human knowledge about biology and physics from the last 150 years. Anytime someone claims that their explanation is correct and contradicts such a large body of knowledge you should be wary. Considered that trials have been conducted on homeopathy, and better blinded studies have shown increasingly less benefit, you should reject homeopathy as being nonsense. Of course, you're entitled to your opinion, however, homeopathy is just crazy talk. It was made up out of whole cloth.
