i have followed the silentlambs issue for awhile now.
i saw the special on dateline, and read a few things on newspapers and online links.
i have a question though and wonder if someone could answer it for me, as this was asked to me by someone "outside of the organization" and i did not know.. .
Recently, a clever individual (I forget whom) on this board pointed out that the average JW, when faced with a potential child molester, runs STRAIGHT to the elders. The elders are certainly not police; occasionally they even acknowledge this.
Most definitely, JWs should be encouraged to confront the accused person first. This makes things really simple...if he/she denies the abuse, a formal investigation may settle the issue. And of course, the elders are not positioned to lead this kind of investigation. But they can provide safe mediation, as well as listening ears. That is really all they need to do...don't judge, just listen.
If they are going to continue to believe in the Bible, they should follow it as well.
'Don't go beyond what is written' indeed!

sorry, i don't have time to search the site right now.
this bloody french isp is rubbish, and i keep getting dropped when i try anything that takes more than 10 seconds.
has the society ever come up with any intelligent reasoning to counter the ages that carbon dating/science has given to various artifacts, i.e.
Iron Gland,
I see you have a picture of Comrade Trotsky...Didn't I send my cronies to kill you with an ice pick in Mexico? Don't tell me you survived!

Are you just toolin' around with us heathen? Sure sounds like it...If so, hahahaha....you should team up with 6o9...
...and, speak of the devil...
in the midst of the debates -- or wars -- concerning the issues of creation and evolution, there is a tendency to over-generalize.
both sides often refer to the opposing side with the broad term of either "evolutionist" or "creationist.
" and yet there exists within both sides a great deal of variety and even controversy.
About the 'species-species transition':
This concept really doesn't make sense. A species does not change into another species. 'Species-species transition' is just semantic, that's all. A species can diverge, of course.
For example, there are several 'strands' of the bacterium e. coli. Some are symbiotic in humans, others lethally parasitic. At what point are these considered separate species? The common definition is... when it can be demonstrated that they cannot interbreed. The interesting thing about bacteria is that they usually reproduce asexually. They simply divide and conquer.
But bacteria and other single celled organisms are also known to swap genes by another mechanism, called horizontal transfer. This even happens across enormous species barriers.
The following article states that an estimated 20 percent of e. coli DNA came from other species.
http://www.sciencenews.org/20000722/bob2.asp
So how to define a species may be somewhat complicated in such cases. But it is not at all uncertain that bacteria, thanks to their rapid reproduction rates, are evolving under our eyes.

some christian clear this up for me willya?
christians are saved thru the mediation of christ right?
if thats the case, will someone tell me why god spent 3000, 2000 years, however long, stuffing around with patriachs and israelites?
'Rule Without God?'
When will God stop sticking his nose in our business ...how else can he prove his friggin' point?
We know from the Heisenburg uncertainty principle that there is really no way to even observe without affecting the outcome of an event (you increase the uncertainty of one variable by how much you know about another).
So don't you think God repeatedly popping up to say'I told you so' before the final accounting will have some effect on the outcome?

one of the things i've had emphasized to me over the past couple of weeks is how irresponsible the watchtower leadership is.
not only that, but they are clinging to that irresponsibility tenaciously, because they realise that once the secular world (or worse, rank and file jw's) begins to hold them responsible for the things they say and do, they are finished.
they tell people that unless they follow watchtower directions now, they will shortly die horribly.
You are saying what should be said...
...isn't it disgusting that so many things described in the public WT literature which are termed 'matters of conscience' are in reality 'disassociating offenses'? For example, a JW who accepts a whole blood transfusion is considered, by his actions, to have disassociated himself.
As if the WT gb didn't make the rules!... "He is not disfellowshipped and shunned...he disassociates himself by his actions...(and then he is still shunned, but shhhhhh! don't tell that to the media)."
The onus is on you, peon. You must allow your conscience to be molded into Jehovah's conscience. We will tell you how to do this. Don't forget only we have Jehovah's telephone number...he doesn't do conference calls with more than 12 people.
My father has been experiencing an ordeal because of a similar issue. It stinks to high heaven!

ThiChi,
I am reading The Gulag Archipelago right now. It is powerfully written. It just makes you want to scream sometimes, doesn't it? One thing that I just read was that thieves were treated better than political prisoners. They often served one reduced sentence for a series of terrible crimes. Political prisoners were often executed for having an opinion.
How hypocritical... the jailors even sought to profit by confiscating items stolen by the thieves.
I want to write a few short articles about what I've read...perhaps I could let you read them first...hopefully I get to it soon.

no, i'm not getting any doubts that the bible is any more than what i believe it is... a myth.
however, i do have a particular question about one aspect that my jw uncle raised during one of our conversations: what about those so-called "prophecies"?
no, i'm not talking about the vague nostradamus-like "statue made of different kinds of crap".
The Bible is so full of interpolations...many of which are obvious. But it is easy to imagine that 'Cyrus' could be an interpolation. You just add the word 'Cyrus' into the margin, and later a copyist places it into the text. Oops!
By the way, there were a lot of 'prophecies fulfilled' by Jesus that don't really exist in the OT, or are quite vague. Like 'not a bone of his will be crushed'. Try to search for that in the OT! You may find something (now I can't remember where) quite unlike the NT interpretation.
