Seems like the guy was messed up from the pain and drugs. . .not excusing it, but as it doesn't seem like a behavior that he was leading up to other than his statement at the crisis center. I have heard a few people say and do things totally out of character when in absolutely unbearable pain. What a shame for that woman to have been repaid for her kindness with such an ugly end. I hope that no one adds to the pain of her family with the comments that we know can be typical of some particularly clueless/tactless JWs.

What Kinds of Weird Things were you banned from or not allowed as a child?
by mama1119 ini could not have a big new kids on the block pin, or wear any new kids on the block pins in puplic becuase it was considered idolatry.
i also could not wear my shoes without laces (it was cool back then) because it looked wordly.
what other strange theings besides the usual holiday/birthday stuff weren't you allowed to do?

Those elders wives who saw evil toys running around her kids room? Parents might have been better served to give you the toy and keep you away from the insane JW woman!

Bought a t-shirt for the local 'cool' station(that I didn't even like-so I don't know what my motivation was!), wore it to the short lived youth WT study and was counseled-along with my friend who was an elders daughter, that "wearing KZOK on (our) shirts was not giving honor to Jehovah."

The way it was explained to me is that one was not giving themselves to their spouse(or future spouse) and was dwelling on thoughts or fantasizing about people that they were not supposed to be thinking of sexually-and you know lusting is the same as adultery, etc etc.

"Critical Hour" JW dies from no-blood policy
by parakeet ini just finished watching a discovery health channel program called "the critical hour," which featured the cases of four trauma patients (9:00 pm, edt).
i missed the beginning of the program, but apparently an elderly jw woman suffered a fall, was critically injured, and her only option for survival was surgery plus blood transfusions.
while she was still able to speak, she refused blood; later her jw husband, accompanied by the ever-present liaison committee jw, also refused the transfusion.

I like my middle name more than my first name, which no one can pronounce. I often can only recognize my name being called because they use my middle name.(last name is common)You would not believe how much people can mangle a variation on Michelle!

Why do you think Mormons are more acceptable in society then Witnesses?
by free2beme inmormons think the garden of eden was in jackson county missouri.
they think that american indians are descendants of a tribe of israel that came to america and were turned red from their sins.
they think that jesus appeared to the indians.

Mormons do have some very unique beliefs, but they try do do some good in society-besides the mission work. They aren't so self-righteous. They do not teach shunning that I am aware of-in an institutional way, though I think some may do so as individuals. I was never shunned after i left. Neither were my gay, former LDS friends. ONe of them had his funeral service in the local ward and the bishop gave it to a filled room of LDS friends. He died of AIDS. They gave me a baby shower after I left. That is my personal experience. They don't necessarily fit in (alcohol, temple garments) in some ways, but then again, there are plenty of non drinkers and non smokers in the world who dress neatly. I am not aware of any prescription that they cannot take. Not drinking coffee and tea and cola-well I get it on one level, but on that same level, there could have been a LOT more dietary restrictions. . .fat, calories, etc. Not a LOT of fat LDS people though. . .that is a tenet of their faith, if not one that is stressed frequently. We know there are regular JWs and then there are the scary ones. Same with any religion, including LDS, RC. Baptist etc. There are misconceptions too. And a person who is part or has been part of a religion has a different perspective on it than someone looking at it from the outside. A couple of people I know of on this board have both perspectives. One thing I know-I could speak to any LDS person and not cringe for them, not to mention they would speak to me back! Most JWs look at me like I have grown horns and a tail-and I was never even baptised!

Ever know anyone killed by a drunk driver?
by free2beme inoften people i work with will mention how they, or someone they knew, drove when they had been drinking.
although they make light of it, because they lived and no one got hurt, they seem to develop a braver and more confident ability in their driving while intoxicated and seem to think the law is not for them.
i personally, hate to hear about this and this is why.. a good friend of our family, a non witness that we grew up with.

20 years ago my husband got a DUI and still feels he should not have been convicted (he got a bad lawyer!) His attitude pisses me off, big time. He was hit by a drunk driver about 11 years ago himself. That was the guys 3rd time. He tried to get us to plead for him to not be punished harshly because he had 3 kids who would go into foster care. I doubt that, but if so, it would be better than being raised by a drunk who drives without thinking. We stayed out of that!

In high school the girl who sat next to me in 11th grade English, Alisha Studley was killed by a drunk driver-who was her prom date. She went to prom with a senior. He was hurt but lived. I know we were devastated by it (and I wasn't close to her) and his life was also destroyed. Another boy in my school was killed in my junior or senior year. He was one of those guys that fit into every group from the jocks, the nerds, the brains and everything in between. Very very cool kid. I did like him a lot and admired his character even then when I was more interested in more shallow things.
My mom told me how she wanted me be her designated driver recently. She said if I was going then I would need to drive. If she was going by herself she wouldn't worry about driving, but she wouldn't want to drive after drinking with anyone in the car. I told her it wasn't just the people in the car that mattered, it was all the other people on the roads. She told me that she knows how much she can drink, she just knows that all her kids get overly worried if she drinks and drives!!! Yes, it is all about OUR paranoia!!!
