I am conservative with some other leanings at times. . .and I fully admit that either side can have entirely obnoxious behaviors and expectations. Many run counter to what their stated political philosopy is (hypocrites abound!)

Thanks for the reminder to keep on 'hounding' my kids about good manners and being polite to people, learning to apologise when we make a mistake.
Sorry you had such an unpleasant lunch, but I do think that handling it differently yourself may have resulted in another outcome. I had a recent experience that was potentially very unpleasant and it was my young adult son who was the central figure. He had done something stupid, that could have resulted in him being arrested/questioned on a technicality if the other person had pressed it and twisted the situation a bit. But the parent came to me and said what had happened in an unthreatening way, we got the issue talked over with the two young people, and left each other in a very amicable frame of mind. Both the kids had been stupid in different ways but the mistake was made whilst my son had tried to protect his daughter and yada yada yada. End result, kids are ok, parents are friendly, and what could have been horrible was a learning experience and an opportunity to hear both sides of the story-parents and childrens perspective(both kids had led the other to believe their parents were monsters, so it was kind of neat for them to find out that no one was and that we cared about our kids and others' also!)However, the father could have approached me in a way that set my hair on fire and/or I could have over-reacted and then we would have proven the obnoxious teenagers right(that their parents were crazy) and my son may have had a brief aquaintance with the local PD(he didn't really do anything wrong, but it would have been a couple hours straightening it out + a record of it all). See J.R.Brown's answer in latest NEWSWEEK re: giving Christmas gifts to JWs
by AndersonsInfo insee newsweek september 4, 2006, page 12, "with beliefnet.com".
fourth question:.
sub-forsanta, a nonprofit organization i work with, donates gifts to families in need every december.

Sometimes charitable groups get their list of who is in 'need' from free and reduced lunch apps. I am sure there is something illegal when that info is given out, but it might be more informal such as the "office ladies" know who the families are that are in need. . .sometimes they have applied for other help-school supplies, clothes, etc. MOST of the programs I am aware of do require a family to register. But I wouldn't give the JW family too hard a time-you know most of them DO have a need, and they sure as heck won't get any from the happiest people on earth, so 'to whom can they go?'

Jehovahs Witnesses in "Coneheads"
by gaiagirl injust watched the film "coneheads" with dan akroyd and jane curtain.
what a laugh (that is, if you liked the skits they used to do on snl).
i couldn't believe the number of well-known actors and actresses who appeared in the film...kevin nealon, michael mckeon, adam sandler, phil hartman, drew carey, sinbad, david spade, tim meadows, john lovitz, jason alexander, michael richards, chris farley, garret morris, laraine newman, dave thomas, jan hooks, tom arnold, julia sweeney, parker posey, and ellen degeneres, in roles large and small, and perhaps others i didn't notice.

The only bad part was that only ex-JWs know enough to be thoroughly amused. All the JWs I knew were(publically) disdaining, and non-JWs don't really get it. We are in a wonderfully unique place for that humour. IMO. I remember my mom getting up and walking out, disgusted that they would amuse themselves at the expense of the organization. When I laughed, my husband looked at me funny, cause while mildly amusing to him, he really didn't 'get' it.

Good News - it is basal cell cancer....
by AK - Jeff into those who have followed my previous thread - here is the latest update [and hopefully the end of the story].
though this sounds bad enough - no one wants to have cancer of any sort - this is both the most prevalent and the most treatable of all skin cancer.
it is tied directly to uv exposure.. the good news is that basal cell is treated with simple proceedures of removal of the affected tissue in most cases [including mine.

Yeah, the lesser of the evils is GOOD. I'm glad to hear this is a manageable thing for you. Take care! Shelly

Jehovah's Witness Associate Livings Editor Does Relief Work
by Kenneson innick patterson, who is associate livings editor (southern living), has a slideshow of the relief work he and other jehovah's witnesses did in mississippi in december.
they worked on restoring kingdom halls and replaced the roof of a mrs. timms.
he doesn't say whether she is a jehovah's witness or one of their bible studies, but i'm assuming she is.

That they even helped Mrs Timms and she is a witness is great, cause mostly I don't see them organizationally helping each other, though they may as individuals sometimes do so. The organization does not encourage such assistance usually unless the organization is getting something for it. In this case, I guess they got some good PR.

It seems even nuttier than ours about baseball and football and ours is pretty extreme. Is that the only sport you all get excited about? And do guys wear real shorts or those stupid culotte like shorts that they do in our basketball teams nowadays? Cause if they wear real shorts that is the only thing I can think of that would make it worth scouting out a pub to watch. . .BTW, I played goalie when in grade school, and I was good!(Fat, so it was hard to miss me-but FAST)
Any insight into the fascination would be appreciated.

Like another poster here, I have a visceral reaction to Tuesday and Thursdays. Whenever I think of Tuesday meetings, I remember how much I loved it when we missed the service meeting and got home in time to watch most of Happy Days(major Tues/JW association whenever I see on of the actors on it. Scott Baio, Ron Howard, Mr. Cunningham, Fonzie. . .)I still take perverted pride in the fact that I always aced those quizzes we had every few months. I am a freak who misses working in the kitchen(cause it got me out of the boring assembly and I got to visit and I love to feed people)I sometimes look at the clock and am REALLY glad I am not at the book study--my LEAST favorite meeting of the week!!! Horrid books, and they went on and on for MONTHS-YEARS. Isn't torture illegal?
