What's The Dumbest JW Belief?
by minimus ini have to think believing in the blood doctrine has to be the dumbest, especially because accepting the watchtower view can kill you.
-
daystar
I suppose it's not one particular belief, but a general policy against things with pagan origins, roots, or influences. And maybe not the dumbest, but one that really bugs me.
Here is why I think it is dumb: They pick and choose what they consider pagan or not based on, as far as I can tell, their own whim.
Wind Chimes - pagan
Christmas - pagan
Playing cards - not pagan (!!) In fact they have been and are used for divination purposes just as the tarot is. There is some debate whether or not they actually were derived from the tarot. Based upon their rationalization for some items being taboo, they could just as easily ban playing cards entirely. And if they say "well, they're not primarily used for that anymore," I say, "well, the symbolism still exists such that they could be used in such a way" just as much of the symbolism around Xmas have been converted to Christian use, the still retain their pagan lean and origins. So, ban Xmas, based upon the JW rationale, they have to ban playing cards as well.
Wedding rings - not pagan (!!) We all know they are. This has been discussed and discussed here.
I could go on, but you should get my point.

whats the deal with long hair
by aoxo into add to the previous thread regaurding beards i have a similar issue with long hair.
i wanted so long to grow it out but of course couldn't.
there is, however a scripture that baffled me, 1co 11:14 "does not nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him; but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her?

re: 1 Cor. 11:14 and Num 6:5
Perhaps Greendawn or someone else can help with these seemingly two contradictory verses regarding how long hair is viewed in the bible.
Now, I know the JW stance is likely that long hair, nowdays, is seen to be symbolic of a rebellious nature. I can rather accept that. When I grew my hair halfway down my back, I sure as hell was rebelling against my JW upbringing. It felt very freeing. Besides, women loved it!
But, if the bible is supposed to be one flowing, united piece of work, how do those not contradict? Now, I can see that Jesus was speaking about a specific scenario, of a "a vow of separation to the LORD as a Nazirite". But... in relation to the other scripture, wouldn't that mean that he is saying to become disgraceful, or sin, for the LORD?

"Worldlings" - What was your opinion when you were in the Org?
by Jerohobobonadad inhello all.. although never a fully paid up, dunked member of the club, i was at times very keen on the whole jw thang.. when i was in, i thought all worldly people were lying, cheating, alcohol and drug addicted, sex obsessed gambling criminals who should be treated with ,at least a very high degree of suspicion.
as per the classic pictures in the 80's books - all women looked like hookers, all men were pictured smoking or with a whisky bottle.. did others here have similar opinions.. i remember being 8 or 9 and my idea of a worldly man was a picture in the pale blue (creation book) or the red one (dunno the name) - i'll try and scan the picture i mean one day, it's brilliant.
it is a chap with a black moustache and a white shirt sat at a circular table looking all forlorn.

It's ironic that now I have a harder time trusting the words coming out of a Witness's mouth than I do "worldlings". (Is that word a regional thing? I was a JW in Texas, in the 70s and 80s and never once heard "worldly people" referred to as anything other than "worldly people".)

what would be "proof" of God's existance to someone?
by BlackSwan of Memphis inshort of god coming down herself to say "howdy y'all!
" what would it take to make you a believer in god?.
not necessarily the god of the bible or any religion in particular, just a supreme deity of some sort, call it ra, thor or chaos.

Warlock
I think you made some good points. Brigid and I talked about this last night.
Outside of some sort of proof of my physical existence, that I can speak directly (debateable) to others, that I can move, interact directly (debateable as well) with my environment, and think, I really can't present proof that I exist. Yet I feel that I exist...

"The bible is a highly unreliable record of actual specifics of events, highly biased." -Daystar
"For what it's worth, I did not put the bible down." -Daystar
Yes, Daystar, I have decided half of you is right.
The WandererPerhaps the difference is that you expect the bible to be a precise record of events, where I do not. A book can be unreliable regarding a precise record of events and yet still be a valuable tool, or just a good read. I can say that The Hobbit is an unreliable record of actual events and not be putting it down. It's still a classic, IMO.
Perhaps my first statement offended you. I'm sorry you think my estimation that a fictional record of events, the bible, as unreliable is putting it down. But that is because you put more faith in its infallibility than I do, simply put.

LOL@The wanderer!!!
For a guy that puts the Bible down, it is interesting
that you have an angel as a representing icon. You need to look a little closer.
Are you some kind of authority on the subject?
What makes you so qualified to make such statements?
Are you a Bible scholar?Oh! Suddenly you want an appeal to authority? Where is yours? You (and the Bible) are the ones making all these fantastic claims. I suppose I read the bible just about as much as anyone raised a JW from birth. Since, I've studied (somewhat) other versions. I've read a number of the pseudepigrapha and apocrypha, etc. I am, however, only qualified to speak for myself and my opinion based upon what I've studied and experienced.
But, anyway, would being a "Bible scholar" prove that what you claim is more true? I think not.
For what it's worth, I did not put the bible down. It has it's value as a teaching tool, much as many other books do. I also think the Satanic Verses have something to say, but certainly not infallible and not "the Truth" and I disagree with much in it. I just think you ascribe a supernaturality to the bible that it does not warrant without a certain amount of blind faith.
And I think I'll stop there... ... for two reasons: I have to leave. And I'm afraid the other half of my avatar, which you failed to perceive, might show his face.
Good night all!
