  Spanking VS. Reasoning

  i am having a discussion at work with the jw's.

  should you spank a child to make them understand or do you reason with them.

  they both agree with spanking.

  Very young children cannot be reasoned with like an older child."don't play on the road" means nothing- they only think other children get hurt on the road.

  "play in the road and you'll get a spanking" is more likely to instil caution and keep them alive.

  I disagree. By 18 months, my son knew not to go on to the road. I taught him that if a car hit him the pain would be like when he burnt himself, or he could be dead like the mouse he found in our kitchen. My friend on the other hand has a son who at 5 still could not be trusted not to run onto the road, despite her spankings. He thought it was a game.

  Id like to see the difference in 20 years between the kids brought up in either camp.

  The move against spanking has been going on for over 50 years and there is plenty of research to show violence against children is less effective than parents that lead by education and example.

  Spanking is the lazy parents option.

  If your boss spanked you whenever you did not do as he said you would call the police. So why is it considered acceptable to hit a small defenseless child? (Funny how parents stop spanking their children once they get large enough to defend themselves and hit back.)

  People are concerned about domestic violence, yet train that behavior into their children by showing that hitting someone is the way to get them to do what you want.

  Read Is. 19:2 Civil war. 9, 10, 15 Economic problems. 11 Foolish leaders. Sums up with what is going on in Egypt and the world.

  Vidqun, you seem to be missing the point. Is sums up what was happening in Egypt and the world at the time. And at every point in time, including our time. And it will happening in another 500 years. So it is not a prophecy. If I say that Vidqun will eat food, it is not a prophecy today, and it will not be a prophecy in 10 years, despite you eating food. It is simply stating the obvious.

  I think the Watchtower sees this as great publicity and will keep clear of disassociating him. He has not authorised a tranfusion, so does not really need to be disassociated. By not reacting, this will give the public the wrong impression that JWs can choose their own actions and that the Watchtower is not a radical, hard core cult, which is what the Watchtower wants in this new era where they are presenting a dishonest public figure.

  Syria, the country where the original King of the North was based, would be plunged into a vicious civil war during the latter part of the days.

  How it that a prophecy? At the time of Daniel, the entire area was constantly in war.

  Daniel 8 proves Daniel is not and is also part of much evidence that Daniel was not completed till about 200BC. Daniel discusses four world powers, agreed upon as Babylon, Medo Persia and Greece and Rome. However, only the first three are named in Daniel. The forth (Rome) that belongs to a time after Daniel was finalised was not named because Daniel is not prophetic.

  The first point to prove before claiming a prophecy is:

  • When was it written?

  Obviously it is not a prophecy if it was written after the event, and there is no proof that any detailed events in the Bible were written prior to the event. Therefore, there is nothing in the Bible to indicate inspiration.

  was it a steady road of doubts or it was reading one book or one major event that made you realize the bible was not what it's claimed to be?.

  A friend of mine was serving where the need was great in Ecuador. He read Joseph's Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces. That book made him realise on the spot that the Bible is just another book that follows the standard script of mythology.
