My old hall was sold to a bridge club. Amusing to think of all those old men sitting around gambling and smoking in the hall.

What would be a good business to replace the Kingdom Hall?
by DevonMcBride ini know i'm jumping the gun here but...with the big news coming there may be some for sale signs in front of kingdom halls in the future.
the kingdom hall near me is at a busy intersection and a prime location for another business.
i think a yoga studio would be perfect there.

Scandal of December 2005 km
by IT Support inthe december canadian kingdom ministry has an article "could your child make a mature decision.
" it instructs parents to indoctrinate their kids to refuse blood and make themselves a martyr.
this, to me, was one of the most chilling sentences in the article (paragraph 3):

This certainly sounds like it could tie in very nicely with Andersons thread on lies and scandal.

I need help with a discussion with my parents!
by jwfacts inmy parents are on the circuit, well educated, well intentioned and totally committed to the wts.
for years i have argued with them over issues and doctrine.
they know most things that are wrong with the wts but refuse to budge on the idea that it is the only true religion.

I just got off the phone with my mother after a three hour conversation. Very dissappointingly my father did not want to be part of it. He is the one that is more logical and I thought if there was any hope he would need to be involved.
It was very upsetting, but I was half expecting that, and you had warned me. I started with trying to get Mum to reason on a persons thinking process, why can others be equally convinced of their postion. Discussed that discussing doctrine is pointless until the premise of ones beliefs are established . For a JW that premise is the F&D slave. Went through why an Org is not necessary and not even biblical. How the temple was cleansed in 1919 yet JWs were still engaged in the same pagan and wrong ideas up to the 1930s. Virtually every answer from Mum was word for word a standard WTS response. I kept saying that they arent her ideas, they are Watchtower answers. What is her idea, what makes sense to her? She was adamant that they are her ideas, it is irrelevant that they correspond with the Watchtower because they are truth. She sounded fairly unmoved even with all the wrong dates and when they were changed, even though she had not being aware of a lot of it before tonight. I mentioned the Worship of Jesus as that is very important to her but go not response at all.
I went after that into a little bit of doctrine to try to show there is sound reasoning on why saying Jehovah is not necessary for salvation since it never appears in the NT. Why the blood stand is understood differently by Christians, and the current WTS stance is not even logical at the moment. Again the standard WTS answers were given and I could not get her to even reason that it could be seen in any other way. The only bit of ground given was on disfellowshipping being wrong in part.
I asked if the WTS changed and particular doctrine, was there one that would be significant enough to make her realise it is not truth. She would not commit to anything. I was hoping she would at least commit to blood, or trinity or something. But she wouldn't.
Mrs Ozzie said the other night something i had never noticed. That when Jesus asked Peter if he would leave he said "Whom would I go to?" (even in the NWT) but a JW always says it as "Where will I go to?". I asked Mum and was blown away when she said "Where". I tried to drive home that a JW will insert Organisation into a lot of scriptures assigned to Jesus. I just wonder if that will ever hit home with her.
At least I know I have had my piece. These days I have what makes the JWs wrong well understood and well structured in my own mind. If what i said tonight can not move her, then nothing I say ever will. I guess I can now move on. I think there might be a saying that says there is nothing worse than unfulfilled hope. I can now give up the hope that I can ever say anything of any effect. I still hope some other thing will move her, but I no longer need to keep researching and finding more answers in a vain hope that the catalyst will be something I say.

why do witnesses call the new testament "greek scriptures"?
by in a new york bethel minute inanybody know how the witnesses managed to demonize the expression, "new testament/old testament"?
my jw mother said "it's because when you call the hebrew scriptures the old testament, it makes them sound out of date, but they're really not because there is so much we can learn from blah blah blah blah blah blah".
any thoughts?.

I agree with 70006, it was to distance themselves from Christendom, each time a Christian says OT it is identifies them as of Satans system.
Another point is also possibly that they dont want the OT to sound old. JWs are strongly based around OT illustations, Mosaic principles etc so they want to make the Hebrew Scriptures sound as important as the Greek ones.

My recruitment agent. She found out from my resume that i was a JW, and had been one herself in the 1970's. She was very helpful in starting the process of my breaking free. So the very first birthday I had was a small but wonderful occasion put on by her for my 36th.

do jehovah's witnesses believe that they are the only ones who will be saved?

Most are too afraid to say it, and many don't even believe it, but it is the teaching. They normally pussyfoot around it in a typical politically correct form of deception, but here is a classic quote
7 Only Jehovah’s Witnesses , those of the anointed remnant and the “great crowd,” as a united organization under the protection of the Supreme Organizer, have any Scriptural hope of surviving the impending end of this doomed system dominated by Satan the Devil.” Watchtower 1989 September 1 p.19
I have a number of quotes at http://jwfacts.com/index_files/salvation.htm.
There is a lot of lines of reasoning that all point to having to belong to the WTS
- Narrow road
- Ark symbolises baptism into Jehovahs "Organisation"
- Babylon the Great destroyed, includes anyone in 'false' religion.
- Have to call on the name Jehovah to be saved
- Must take hold of the skirt of a Jew, ie the JW F&D slave
- and on and on and on.

Hi Wombat,
I doubt it is to do with the new GB. I know one of them personally, and just a couple of weeks ago he gave a talk saying how wonderful it is being on the GB, and what an inspiration all the old ones are and how much he admires their depth of knowledge and energy. I had been hoping he'd see through it all but it look like that is not to be the case.

Is it all downhill after leaving JW's?
by lynnmelo ini know many people will get angry at this, but i had to share some observations i've had since i discovered this board a couple of days ago (see my original post under "why all the venom?").
i'll be very honest and say that i was hoping that i would discover that the jw's were wrong about some things, including the so-called "apostate" sites (i have been recommended to some internet sites and some books that i plan to investigate further).
i was hoping to find that people really didn't need the jw's "spiritual food" to remain true to god.

a very interesting comment Steve, you probably become what you always really were.
Lynn, if you are a strong Christian, then that wont change whether you are a JW or not.

Even if the bible is not inspired, is Christianity a good thing?
by jwfacts ini dont want to offend anyone that worships jesus, but am toying with a few ideas at the moment.. i am not sure yet about the inspiration of the bible.
however reading franz' christian freedom gives me a lot more respect for jesus teachings and christianity.
lets say that jesus was just a man.

Some great comments.
Gumby, I tend to agree, Jesus certainly was giving a general principle based guide to finding spirituality. But I struggle with Paul. He shows that Christ was the end to the oppresive Mosaic law, then true to his training went and introduced a whole host of new ones.

What are you REALLY like?
by jwfacts init is strange chatting on the net, not knowing what everyone is really like.
do you pretend to be someone you are not?
i find it hard to know how to take people here sometimes, as words do not convey as much without seeing the facial expressions and hearing the tonal inflections.

I dont think it is possible to be a JW and be someone who thinks too much. I know many JWs that are intelligent, but not many that are great thinkers. Great at reciting, but not at taking a thought to many different conclusions.
