2 nails in the coffin due to the internet
by ballistic inunfortunately, my wt library isn't working so i can't post an actual quote (i suppose the witness god put an electronic curse on it), however - do you remember those really good(?
) articles telling us how the witnesses have always used the latest technology in spreading "this good news" to all parts of the world?.
there was phonograms, photo dramas of creation, latest printing facilities and the first of it's kind multi lingual photo type setting equipment and so on.. and then came the internet, well i mean the proliferation of internet use as the internet has been around since the 60's in one form or another.. there are two problems as i see it with the internet:.

I am with Mr Ben on this.
I am just glad I came to my senses and got out. Thanks to the internet and access to information.
I feel sorry for the ones who are still in and refuse to see this religion for what it is... a mind controlling cult.

dumbing down made us witnesses
by sleepy ini've almost forgotten why i thought jw's were the truth.. there i was thinking about it as i drove in my car yesterday trying to remember why.but i couldn't.. prehaps its because there was not one reason but a hole host of things that seamed to fit at the time.. i cannot remember a point when i started to doubt, but i did read a lot of scientific books which helped tune my brain a little bit.. i also noted that the maganzines (w&a) were very small a had very little content i found this very strange as i noted that science writers went to great pains to prove a point where as the societiy seemed happy with a few lines and a quick conclusion.but the society expected people lives to depend on its information.. but i wanted to know why i believed to avoid making the same mistake twice.. so after consideration i've come to the conclusion i was under the influence of misinformation by the society and had asumed these people knew what they were talking about and were unbaised and always checked their facts.. now i know better and will make a goal to always research myself to a higer than "normal " level before i except unusual things as true.. so i belive i was a witness due to misinformation , but this problem effect us all in many ways, how do we know we are being well informed when we read something?.
well there is a majour problem in the fact that a lot of people find reading boring , we enjoy being entertianed and to learn can be hard.
i have had to force myself to read things i didn't enjoy in order to understand something important.i am glad after that i have done it ,but i didnt enjoy it.. yes people read little and prefear it when everthing is given to them on a plate.. i belive that lack of education and a lack of a critical mind coupled with the dumbing down of society in general will lead people into religious traps and pseudoscientific errors.. we must encourage education and the desire to learn in our children.. the dumbing down i see in society worries me.

Sleepy,
Thanks for another thought provoking post.
I have often thought the same thing.
I had the same feelings Farkel expressed
Even when my naturally logical mind questioned something they said or did, I always experienced that thought-stopping, "it must be ME that's wrong. THEY can't be wrong: Jehovah is 150% behind them."

Jurs!!!!
Welcome back to the board! I was wondering where you were. Thanks for the update. I have tasted the shunning thing as well although I am not DF and I have not DAed myself. I have merely stopped attending meetings and the JWs that I meet in the mall and stores treat me like I am not there either. (and I am usually with my wife who still attends the meetings)
I really like the way you handled things at school.

Friends we are too unbalanced.
by sleepy inwell sometimes we are.. look we have the knowledge and experience to help a lot of people.must of us have one time been jw's and understand how many think.so lets not put them off by being too negative.. when we were witnesses most of us were quite happy .
we tried to be good people , to put into practise principles that many people think are good.
we did this sometimes even when we didn't want to , because we thought god would hold us accountable and because we cared for people .

Xena,
You said it very well. That is what I had in mind on this subject.
I agree with what Frenchy and Larc say as well.Edited by - chester on 5 December 2001 14:22:17

Sleepy,
I was the first to reply to your post yesterday afternoon.
I said I agreed with what you said. At the time I thought that you were talking about witnessess as people and not the organization. That is the part I agree with.I agree that the people for the most part have good intentions. I personally know some people who were helped by coming into the organization. They actually became better persons. That is the part I agree with.
When it comes to the organization I agree with Billygoat, Englishman and the rest. I am so glad I was able to see the need to get out.
