Higher Education

hello all...just cant stay away from you...hehe .

at our recent co visit, at the elder/ms meeting where co goes over a branch approved outline with us he spent 10 min on the subheading "avoid snares of pursuing higher education"...something like that, my notes are at home but you get the gist.

he essentially spent the time bashing university education citing among other things that a full 30% that go to college dont find employment in the field that they studied in.

The 30% statistic is very misleading. The statistic should be how many people don't end up in fields that require a college education. This percentage is probably very low. Many people major in Mathematics or English with no intention of working in those fields. I for example was a Mathematics major with really no idea what I wanted to do. I am now a Software Analyst. Did I get a job in my major, no. Do I have a job I could have gotten without a 4 year degree, no way.

Many corporate jobs do not have a direct major that links to it. (EX: Medical Reps, Buyers, Account Managers) They still will not higher someone without a 4 year degree. Also, Corporations are expecting higher education. There is no such thing as hiring the high school go getter anymore. Companies do not expect employees to stay for 30 years anymore so they want to invest the minimum necessary.

I think it is irresponsible not to encourage your children to seek some kind of post high school education. They are set themselves up to be dependant on the government down the road for food stamps or health needs. It is not appropriate to put yourself in a situation where you will not be able to meet your basic needs.

Not everyone needs to go college but unless you have an aptitude in a trade, I see no other option. Even in the trade fields it is great when you are young but unless you gain business skills and move into a desk job you will have a hard time when you are older.

yo elders, is there a statue of limitations on "sins"?

i know we have heard about it as regards an elder who has "sinned" and keeps it quiet, he does not have to step down.

but when it comes to the lowly rank and file, what would you do, or "have " to do if you found out about some actions of a publisher that occurred a few years ago?

also does a person who leaves the truth and then wants to come back after a number of years have to confess to all the stuff they did when they were out ?

There was one girl in the hall I attended. She had left and committed sexual sins. She married the guy she was committing them with. Some years pass, they both start attending meeting at the KH. He was never a JW but she was baptised. On there return she confessed what had occured why she was gone. She was publically reproved and not allowed to answer questions at the KH for a period of time. I think about 6 months.

Why Do Some "JWs" Do This???..........

i know of some witnesses that haven't go out in service or attended a meeting in years.

most "new ones" (to them and they could be witnesses for 10 years!

) that live in the territory have no clue of these "witnesses".

That was my husband. When we were dating, I was Catholic and attended mass regularly in good years less regulary in others. My husband was raised a JW and never mentioned religion to me. Then one day we are talking about kids and he says I will tell them the truth. Oh boy was I shocked to here what that was. He was stuck in that state, thought they were right fell out because he couldn't keep up.

XJWs and Christianity

not sure if this is the right place for this.... just wondering about this.

it seems to me that most folks who leave "the truth" tend to go athiest or remain in some type of christianity.. anyone know of (or are) xjws who have gone a different route (i.e.

eastern religions, neo-pagan, wicca, etc.).

Have any weird home remedies?

i was comparing notes awhile back with a friend, about some weird home remedies we were raised with and how often they do work.

what i was wondering, did you have any of these in your family and if so, what were they.

i will give you a couple of examples of my own.. for a cold, my mom would mix lemon juice, whisky and honey and warm them up and we would drink this as a home made cough syrup.

For hiccups

fill a glass of water half full. Sit in a chair and put your head down between your legs. Then tip the cup backwards and drink water in that position. It cures hiccups everytime.

The Blood doctrine - A Medical or Scriptural issue?

if you were to ask any witness whether or not the blood doctrine is scripturally or medically based, you would receive the same answer 100% of the time.

"scripturally, of course.

there is one component in particular which shows the wts uses medically based information to cement its postion on what is and what is not allowed for a witness to accept.

The last meeting I was in that discussed this. The elder simply said Jehovah Witnesses are not allowed to take whole blood or these components everything else is acceptable.
