Were those children crying because their teacher told the truth or because their parents lied to them?

Thats the important question, the one that everyone, especially parents, need to consider. Children are taught that lying is bad, yet adults think nothing of perpetuating the lie that santa brings them gifts for being 'good'. Same as teaching children never to talk to strangers and candy is bad for their health. Then the adults encourage them to beg candy (treats) from strangers on Halloween. The list goes on -- easter bunny, tooth fairy, birthdays etc No wonder the children cry.... how confusing and disappointing to see what hypocrites the adults are.

New Yorkers: how are you getting to work during the MTA strike?

my commute has gone from 40 minutes to over two hours.

i first walk across the brooklyn bridge to the wtc path terminal.

i then take the path to 33rd.

wombat, many New Yorkers are NOT complaining. They're enjoying the walking, making new car pool buddies, laughing with strangers, using the commuting down time to eat and socialize ...employers are gracious, cab drivers are polite, police are helpful and...... as always ....... New Yorkers are pulling together in a positive way --- as they do in every situation that befalls the city.

These are the pics you won't see on your local news. The media would rather paint a negative picture of victims and criminals.

Does anyone collect antique china?

a couple months ago we had a garage sale.

we gathered old useless boxes of stuff from friends and family.

stuff they were wanting to just trash and we took it to sell.

Hi Billygoat, I'm only familiar with Limoges, I think the value depends on whether it's hand-painted or a transfer design, where it was made, age and condition. You need to talk to a couple of reputable dealers, you could have something quite valuable. I had a set of Limoges dinnerware from my grandmother, was amazed at what a dealer paid for it! Just be sure to talk to more than one dealer, and do some research first. Kovels is supposed to be a good resource, they publish books and also http://www.kovels.com .

well, this is the first day of winter.

for all those who love winter snow, ice, slush, slipping and falling, colds and sore throats, frostbite and shoveling, enjoy it,.

I like winter, the air is fresh and clean and kills a lot of nasty germs and pollution. Skiing and ice boating are great sports. I equally like every other season too.

The nice thing about seasons is that they always end, and they all hold HOPE for something different at the end, even if it's just a better climate!

i found yesterday's wt study to be one of the more thoughtful in recent weeks.

it carried some important lessons and reminders, especially in reinforcing the kindness and mercy with which jehovah views us, even when we are at our very worst.

It was encouraging to hear others' thoughts, also to see a more gentle and understanding spirit moving among the congregation as the meeting progressed. Anyone else notice this?

"THIS IS JEHOVAH'S HOUSE..." GAG!

some of the kids my age in my hall are just an insult to my generation.

at the service meeting last week i was talking with one and we were near the front of the hall and there were a bunch of little kids running and jumping around the stage.

she goes: "what a shame.

I never heard the the speakers' platform referred to as Jehovah's throne, but if someone wants to view it with that degree of respect, there's nothing wrong with it.

It IS Jehovah's house because it's where we gather as a group to worship Him. It really just comes back to common courtesy -- showing respect and good manners in another's house or property. Children can and should be taught the appropriate places to run around and play.

Defd, why do witnesses practice infant baptism?

instead of highjacking an earlier thread on young ones getting baptized, i thought i'd just start a new one and ask our favourite dub lurker why his faith practices infant baptism.

and defd, if you feel that a 7 or 8 or even 12 year old isn't an infant with regards to making major decisions, i would like to hear your explanation.

JWs and the holidays at work

i had lunch this week with some business colleagues and one of them complained that at her office there is now a "no merry christmas" policy which includes not saying merry christmas, not decorating the office for christmas, no christmas party, no secret santa games or exchanging of gifts.

i asked why all the rules and she said that there is one woman (out of nearly 150 employees) who is a jw and office management has decided the best way to handle the situation without excluding this woman or offending her in any way is to eliminate all reference to the holidays.

as you can imagine the other employees are in an uproar.

If they really didn't celebrate holidays they would offer to work on these 'pagan' days instead of taking advantage of the holiday.

If their place of employment remains open, like a hospital, some do offer to work so their co-workers can celebrate their holiday. Others choose to use days the business is closed to go out in service -- so they are working on that day, doing the important work for Jehovah.

Fourth and Final Chemo Treatment Coming Up

well, its coming up on monday, my last chemo treatment!!

i cannot believe i have had 3 treatments already.

after the chemo, i will be treated with herceptin and taxol for 12 weeks, weekly infusions.

anewme (and others) -- Some private docs DO find ways to brush off uninsured patients and many are reluctant to be paid in cash. The best thing is contact a good university teaching hospital, that's where the most current and (imo) best docs are anyway. Most have clinics that offer top quality care based on ability to pay. If it does turn out to be cancer or other serious illness, many times the facility will offer care either for cash or gratis under research programs. Uninsured patients often have to search hard for good medical care, but it IS out there! Never EVER ignore symptoms because of money!!!
