this has been nagging at me...and i think that tomorrow i'll call the ss office to find out for sure.. my jw xhusband recently started collecting ss.
he is 62. i was married to him for almost 20 years, and we filed taxes jointly.
we divorced in 1990. i don't think he paid much into ss if at all.. he had his own business.. and worked for others for short periods of time over the years.

Journey...
He was pretty sketchy about business accounting. He always claimed a loss. Never a profit... ever. In truth he never made much. My income is what usually supported us...

Thanks Snoozy! He really is remarried. Even better! I forgot to ask the remarried question... but you answered it for me!! Thank you sooo much! He has applied for a green card for his new wife... looks like he will have her working to support them....

I just talked to someone at SS. He can collect 50% if he files at normal retirement age (65) If he files for early retirement, which he did he can get 35%...but only if I am collecting already...which I am not. Apparently, if he does try to collect, it won't effect the amount I am entitled to... WHEW!!!
Coffee feeling a little better now...

Hi Snoozy,
I am not collecting... plan to work for years to come. Most of what I have earned has been since the divorce. Am I understanding correctly that he can claim half of my benefits? I would only collect half of what I am entitled to??

Hi Snoozy,
We were married almost 20 years...and have been divorced for 20 years. He is not working...has retired...and remarried a 20 something Phillipino jw about a year and a half ago, and has applied for a green card for her. If he can collect on my benefits, I am horrified!

Hi Sam... I wouldn't put it past him. If he didn't pay into the system, how can he be collecting? I just have this gut feeling...

I worked pretty consistently during the marriage... and continued to do so after the divorce... with progressively better paying jobs.
Is it possible that he is somehow tapping into my benefits? I can't collect for a number of years yet...

the following newspaper article appears to be the original (and more lengthy and indepth) article from which associated press took their "summarized" (and less informative) story which is being picked up by a number of television stations and newspapers across the u.s. .
this better version should be forwarded to media outlets as a more informative version for their audience.
they also embrace political neutrality.
I missed this the first time around... thanks for bumping! The statement by the parents was obviously carefully worded...probably by someone at hq.
