Crownboy - Hey... same deal with me... all my family is basically in it (except for my one grandmother and one uncle.) I don't want to strain my relationship with my family either, so i am thinking i will move away after i finish my next year of school... you know, transfer as a junior. I have a major, yes. I want to be a vet some day, but that means about 8 years of school, so we'll see what really happens. what about you?

Rummy - Yeah, I am soooo glad I am in college too. I really love it, and I am having an opportunity to actually become a free thinking person, not some robot who spits out nothing but indoctrinated information. Thanks for your encouragement

I am 19. I am still a JW, on the outside. Attend meetings, go out in service, give talks, etc... However, I am just going through the motions. I was raised in the "truth" and was baptized at 16, mostly due to pressure from a particular elder. My best friend (also a JW)began telling me a few things about the organization a few years ago, about the many inconsistencies and some of his doubts. At first, I would get so mad at him for telling me stuff. We got into more than one argument because I wanted him to shut up and stop making me doubt what I always knew as true, but he wouldn't. Today, I have him to thank for keeping the pressure on and making me realize what actually goes on.
What keeps me in now though is fear. Not so much fear of being shunned, but fear of hurting my dear friends and family. I know that once I get the courage to leave, I will be able to handle the shunning. I figure that true friendship is unconditional, and if I end up not having any true friends, so be it... I can make new ones. The problem I have is hurting my family, mostly. I am extremely close with my mother and aunt, and they would both be devastated if I left. My dad would be upset because he wants my mom to be happy, but since he himself is unactive I think I would be ok after a while with him.
So, ashi, to answer your question, overall I think it is fear and insecurity for me. I really care a lot of what others think of me, and don't want my image to be trashed. But, I guess I'll see in the long run what really happens.... I really am glad I finally started posting here. It helps a lot to talk to people who have similar feelings and experiences and doubts, and reassures me I'm not crazy.

Favorite food at Assemblies
by finnrot ini hated growing up as a witness.
i hated the boring ass meetings where you could hear a pin drop on the floor, i hated going door to door and i hated not being normal like the other kids.. but the one thing i liked was going to the assemlies at the oakland coliseum.
i would wander around and find other kids to goof around with.

Movie that could describe your experience as a jw?
by Nicolas inpersonnally, i thing that the movie "the matrix" and the movie "the truman show" really describe my experience in the wbts.
when i discovered the truth about the "truth", my perception of the reality became really different.
all that i have been taught was just a big lie.

"But I'm a Cheerlearder" starring Natasha Lyonne
About a girl who is a lesbian, and how she handles her family and friends shunning her... good movie, but better if you can relate. Being a JW and, therefore, being afraid of the shunning by family and friends if you go against the norm seems to be much like the "coming out" thing.
I know this wasn't the topic, but I figure I'll say best books too.
1. 1984 - Orwellian classic
2. The Shunning - About an Amish girl who goes against society and is therefore expelled, leaving everyone to hate her. -

Do you see many jw's at your door?
by terafera inthis has probably been addressed before, but.... the other day a philipino man knocked on our door.
my husband answered it, and a nice elderly man said something in philipino to us, holding a watchtower and awake.
my husband said we only spoke english, and the old man smiled, said something and left.

I have lived in my new neighborhood now for almost 6 years. Only once have I come in contact with Witnesses... That's quite alright with me though.
I know though, that certain territories just get worked over and over and over and, well, you get the point.....

Alternatives to JWs
by Xander insince there are new people coming to this board on fairly regular basis with questions about the jw religion, i thought i'd pose this topic.. many, upon leaving the organization, don't really know where to turn for guidance.
"look to yourself" doesn't really cut it when you've been told how to think your whole life.. many choose atheism, which is fine.
however, for those still looking for a religion, here is a site that lists many of the worlds major religious movements.

OK - so i did it twice....
The first time i did it, i answered all the questions as would your typical brainwashed dub.... ans, no surprise here, got 100% JW.
My second time, I did it as I actually feel. Surprisingly, since I answered many questions completely opposite of how witnesses really view things, I was still 71% JW. That's scary... I was 100% Liberal Protestant though.
Xander, in response ot your question of whether it was off base or not, I am not sure. I think some questions only offered teh option to take not applicabel, because how i feel was not on there. all in all though, interesting quiz, Xander... Thanks

" Shay "
by TheRecordCollector inthe following was emailed to me, i'm fowarding it to you.
this will either make you cry, give you cold chills or leave you cold, but it puts life into perspective!
at a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children, the father of one of the school's students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended.

You know, as much as people like to say that there's no one good or decent left in the world, this proves otherwise. That was so sweet. It also goes to show that all the youth today aren't the evil parent killing, binge drinking, drug addicts that everyone shows on the news. I love stories like this.... Thanks RecordCollector
