Hm. I don't know what I think about myself in this whole education level/intelligence debate. I am supposed to be all smart and am getting a PhD and all but my own "innate intelligence" *rolling eyes* never made me question the truth, embarassingly enough.
It was only when I started attending classes that made me stare certain issues, like evolution, timeperiods required by the geologic record etc in the eye, that I realized that the truth couldn't be ...truth.
BUT, there was also a non-academic element of realizing that all these people were normal, generous individuals, again contrary to wha tthe JWs teach. Another thing was thtat my life was fuller, more interesting etc OUT of the truth and I didn't have "demon problems" "depression at the removal of Jehovah's blessing" etc when I left either. Soooo, perhaps all the "critical thinking" you are required to do in an academic setting flows over to other aspects of your life (thank god).
My sister on the other hand was NEVER suckered in by the JWs. She said she thought I was an idiot for believing all that crap. And she got Ds in high school and had to drop out of community college. Go figure- obviously there are a number of independent factors that influence whether or not one accepts the truth. So there are no hard and fast rules i.e. educated people never are witnesses, BUT I think that it is less likely that an educated (beyond bachellors) person stays in the truth.
I know this post is a little off subject.

Please don't take offence at this ...
by Joe Grundy ini'm not a jw, never have been, and in no danger of becoming one.. having read several of the wt mags and publications (and many more extracts on this and other sites) they come across to me as being very patronising in tone and full of pseudo-scholarship, misquoted (or unnamed) sources, references taken out of context, mis-translations, etc.
i'm aware of jw 'teaching' on the subject of higher education for its members (i.e.
not a good or necessary thing) so i can understand why many jws raised in it may not challenge the publications.

Hm. It just seems strange to me, as in XBEHERE's case of the doctors in the truth that they would stay in the truth, as a doctor, having learned all about the biology of the human body, which of course they would have had to have a thorough education of evolution to understand.
What I am thinking is, that for all these people to have received their advanced degrees, they would have to learn SOMETHING in depth that conflicts with the JW thought process.
So they just ignore, in the case of medical docs who are JWs all that is supposed to be true about biology...?
Don't want to beat a dead horse, but I am truely curious!

Dido,
Yeah, but now he is OUT. What started his questioning of the truth?
I am wondering who all these supposedly "highly intelligent" ed-u-ma-cated JWs are that STAY in the truth... thus proving that it is the truth...
or so they say.
C'mon, guys, there has to be someone who knows of one...single...educated...PhD... that has stayed in the truth after COMPLETING their degree and totally believe the "truth"
-or is there?

How much persecution did you expect to come when you were a JW?
by JH indid you expect, that one day, you would be persecuted for being a jw?.
how bad did you expect it to get?
do jw's today still expect some kind of persecution to come because of their beliefs and actions?

Oh my god, I was just remember ing the other day the horrible images of physical torture my mind, like any 12-year old's could conjure up. I would scare myself witless thinking about all the stuff the world would inflict upon me during the great tribulation.
Such horrible horrible things to have children thinking about :(
And I would ask my mom, who normally was a very good psychologically competent mother about those things and sho would tell me that my faith would have to be strong enough to take those things.
GOD she had to know she was spewing out b.s. but had to toe the party line with the JWs. Shameful.

Does anyone remember the recent (Awake?)article about the guy who was a physicist who "found the truth"?
It was like the society was touting this "poster boy" as an example of ALL the highly educated people that realize that there HAS to be a creator. -the tone of the article was, again, BARF!

mmm, I don't know about that...
I was always told by my mom and other witnesses that "there are many doctors and highly intelligent ones that realize Jehovah's truth" (barf)
And a couple of you guys just said it here on this thread. But can anyone name examples? What are their degrees in? I doubt they have degrees in Religion, Biology, HIstory or Geology. I think that they would tend to have degrees in Marketing, Accounting etc. And maybe it would be a BA or BS, not a PhD.
It is just that people always told me that there were a lot of doctors in the "truth" but I think that no one actually knew of these "doctors"- like they were urban legend or something...
I hope I don't offend the people that posted, stating the contrary, but could you please give examples- like what were their degrees in (subject) and what type of degree did they have- MS, PhD etc.
Thanks!

old light on mediating...
by lost_sheep inblow the dust off your ancient watchtower tomes & delve into the annals (or should that be anals?
) of the wts's past... i'm trying to find out if they have ever taught that christ is the mediator for all people.
recently finding out (after being raised a witness) that they teach that christ is not the mediator for everyone was disturbing to say the least.

That is so lame.
I don't know why I am so interested in finding out just exactly what the down low is on this particular issue but it just seems so COMPLETELY REDICULOUS that I actually want to know what the exact "letter of the law" is that the JWs follow.
Maybe this will come in handy for talking to my mom later...

so the fds pray directly to J?
they don't end their prayer, "through your son JC amen"?

wouldn't that be more correct, if the fds are our mediators to god?
or are they our mediators to JC?
sooo, we should pray "in the name of the fds, through JC to the big J"?
aaaa help me lord to understand the convoluted strings of crap coming forth from the pens of your servant here on earth. -

I get why the JWs believe that, but why do the bros and plain ol r+f JWs say "we ask this prayer through the name of JC your son, amen"?
why don't they (non-annointed) say "we ask this prayer through the name of the f + d.s., amen?"
