  I think as long as they're able to contribute something they can stay.

  That may have been true in the past, but it may very well no longer be true today. There was a general cleaning of the hives a few years back reported here on JWN.

  This was always on a case-by-case basis for COs and DOs.

  I think that GB members are simply left there until they die - for example, Albert Schroeder was left on the GB long after he could no longer even talk.

  i have been re-reading chapter 10 of ray franz's brilliant book "in search of christian freedom" (must reading for every borean-like jw and former jw), and i note that on page 315 it says that in 1995 there were 36,638 disfellowshipped, and 37,426 deepfried in 1996.. are there any statistics that show whether the number of expelled persons is increasing or decreasing proportionate to the number of publishers each year since then?

  The Borg doesn't publish their DFing numbers, so you would have to find figures for total baptisms, total pubs, and then factor in the average death rate for those years. Your results wouldn't be conclusive, but the numbers could be interesting. It doesn't feel like more DFings lately, but that could just be where I am.

  I don't see how you would determine how many were actually DFd and how many just left quietly this way.

  There was a 280 CE too, but that was a 4-seater hardtop with no convertible top.

  Just by chance, I was thinking about getting one of these to keep at our vacation cabin in Colorado - automatic, unfortunately, so that Mai could also drive it. Silver with black interior, I think...

  Now if we could only solve the mystery of Terry's Jaguar-Maserati.

  Excellent taste, Talesin.

  On the car, if you mean the two-seater (the only one with a hardtop/softop) that was the 280 SL. Get the manual 4-speed, I can personally tell you that is one of the best-shifting manual 4-speeds ever made (but the manual is rather rare).
