The Society changed its view about Paul and Matthias in 1971. There was a Question from Readers on this in the May 15th issue.

What's really funny is to see the differences on this in the old Aid book. The first part of the Aid book had been published in 1969 and in the article "Apostle" they said Paul was one of the 12. The second part was published in 1971 and the article on Paul said Matthias was one of the 12, not Paul. The Insight article on Apostle was re-worked to fix this.

Thank you, UnDisfellowshipped, for the Thanksgiving wishes! There is much to be thankful for indeed!

I am thankful for many things...too many to list here. One thing I can be very thankful for is our two children who have never known the bondage of living under the Watchtower Society's rules.

One of our traditions today is listening to the Akathist "Glory to God for All Things." It is a hymn of thanksgiving written in the last century. It can be listened to from this website:

Golden Age Goodies

recently i had the pleasure to examine a stash of 1920s and 1930s golden age magazines, among the rarest of watchtower publications.

i thought it would be a fun idea to have a thread in which i share with you some of the amazing, ridiculous, hilarious things contained therein.

hence, this is the first post of a series of excerpts, scans, etc.

Interesting. The Calendar was most likely Woodworth's invention but that it appeared in the 1935 Yearbook would indicate it had Rutherford's approval...at least, initially.

I wonder if anyone has ever critiqued Woodworth's scientific calculations?

i agree that everyone should have the right to practice thier own religion, as long as it doesn't interfere with another person right to privacy and right to not be harassed in their own home by those who feel they have the better religion.. the door to door work of jws is harassment, when you consider that they call for the most part in the morning, univited to talk about why there religion is the right one and often have very bad things to say about other belief systems, which has the potential of disturbing the peace.

Thank you, Blondie, for posting the pdfs of the oral arguments. It was very interesting to read.

How I remember back in the 60s and 70s how we were told to disregard "No Soliciting" signs ("We're not solicitors!") and yet the oral arguments refer to this as a possible remedy for householders who might not want visitations. I well remember when I was a JW disregarding people who said: "I've told you guys over and over I'm not interested!" It was only later (in the 70s as I recall) when they started to keep record of "Do Not Calls" and these had to be formal requests of an almost threatening nature before we recorded them.

I really don't think the JW court victories on door to door issues mean they have the unlimited right to call again and again on people who tell them they are not interested and may even say "please stop bothering me," but because they fail to make it a threatening-sounding formal "Do Not Call" request are ignored.

I just got the other two issues of Golden Age in that continue the series on the Theocratic Calendar. I plan on making pdfs of them very soon and will announce it here when it's available.

I just had a couple of questions for other researchers here:

I remember the Yearbook about this time (must have been the 1935 YB) had a page on the new calendar. Were there any other mentions of the Theocratic Calendar in the WT literature of this period?

I seem to remember reading years ago some terse statement (was it in a later Golden Age or the WT of this period?) which put the kabosh on this whole idea. Seems like it was a note from Rutherford saying concern about the calendar was a waste of time or something like that. Can anyone confirm this?

And, one finally for some fun. How hard would it be to resurrect this Calendar? Could we create a 2007 version of the Theocratic Calendar? It might be fun to figure it out and create a webpage for it.

I think there's a difference between occasional visitations by groups like the Girl Scouts and organized repeat visitations by JWs.

Has the Supreme Court dealt with the issue of repeated visitations that could violate one's right to privacy? I don't think it has. The rights that the JWs won in those Supreme Court cases are not unlimited.

If the Girl Scouts kept calling every 6 weeks on people despite being rebuffed every time they called there would be a public outrage. Just because the JWs have the right to preach their religion uninvited does give them an unlimited right to return every 6 weeks to the same people again and again if they've been told not to do so.

I think it's clear that the courts have held that JWs have the legal right (freedom of speech, freedom of religion) to call on people at their homes.

However, I also think a legal argument based on the right to privacy could be made against repeated calls after being told not to call again. I do not think the legal victories won by JWs gives them unlimited permission to make continued visits on people who have told them not to call back. And, since JWs often ignore requests not to call back (except when it's done formally) I think some regulation of repeated visits by JWs could be feasible.

In other words, they have the right to call once but they do not have the right to make repeated calls if the householder objects.

I think a key point to deal with is the continuing, repeated calls.

If a householder has told the JWs he/she is not interested they should not be subjected to continued visits everytime the territory is worked. Therein is the harrassment.

Is it the householder's responsibility to formally request relief? Could the JWs (or other similar groups) be required to ask if future calls are welcome? Would it be illegal to require JWs or other such groups to ask this?

some of the following i've already mentioned elsewhere, some comments are new.

When were you there, CoCo? Perhaps we knew some of the same folks? I wanted to join one of the French-speaking congregations but ended up staying in Brooklyn Heights. At one time I lived on the 9th floor of the 107 building. Sometimes I'd meet new Bethelites who would tell me about their subway rides to their meetings in some congregation in Queens and then they'd ask me: "How long does it take you to get to your congregation?" I'd answer: "Well, it depends if I take the elevator or the stairs." (For those who don't know...the Brooklyn Heights Congregation used to meet on the first floor of the 107 building!)

I was in Brooklyn from Sept of 73 to Feb of 75 and then went to the Farm for a year. Knorr's "Newboy talk" at that time was basically a telling of the "birds and the bees." He started off by saying: "You should know this by now but in case you don't..." Funny what you remember from a lecture like that. I remember him making the point that semen contain millions of sperm and emphasizing the "milions" part. His point was something to the effect of the largesse of God in designing sexual reproduction in providing so many sperm. "Jehovah is not stingy..." I think is an exact quote from the lecture.
