Too young for the orchestra memories, but we had a piano at the Khall I spent most of my time at. There were a couple of people that actually played fairly well and it was much more enjoyable than the cassettes.

Who remembers the Circuit Orchestra's? How good was yours?
by eyeslice inin the days before 'simplification', the days of 3 day circuit assemblies (fri evening plus sat & sun), when we used have catering departments that cooked and served up hot meals, we also used to have circuit orchestras.. i must say ours was pretty poor though, only matched by the lacklustre singing.. eyeslice.
(bee in his bonnet since mrs eyeslice went to singing practice at local kh on sunday evening).

Pretty interesting stuff and something I'd not made myself aware of. I guess I shouldn't be suprised that these groups were never mentioned by my family or anyone else associated with the borg when I was.

i did it 20 years ago, but the elders still remember what i did, sometimes i wish they never knew about it.

Mostly due to having been hauled in for a "library party" for someone else's fuck ups, I never confessed anything to the elders. If they felt it was acceptable to charge me with every crime that had ever been rumored about me even though I wasn't involved in the issue at hand, I had a pretty damn good idea what would happen if I told the truth or shared any questions with them. Seriously, they brought me in to ask about a situation I wasn't involved in and put the heat to me like I was on trial, WTF? I also had the advantage of having my dad being an elder, so I already knew these guys and how they thought and worked. Based on how well the masturbation talk went with dad when I was 12, I made sure to keep my mouth shut from there on.

i mean that i don't put out the long thought provoking posts of some, such as atjeff, and i don't delve deep into the socio-political arguments that are always flaring up between the cons and libs.
as a matter of fact, except for smartass comments, or contributions to fluff posts, i don't really add anything that matters.

In my time on the boards I've come to realize that there is a balance that must be struck. I also seem to fall into the "fluff" category most of the time. I have a feeling that like me, most "fluffers" have thrown more than one well thought out post to the masses.
These boards offer a diverse group with many different approaches to each subject. Sometime's the more intellectual posts do us good, sometimes the wise remark after is what makes something click. We all have a value to each other and this community, we just provide it in different ways.

New to Halloween...What do YOU do?
by Bourne ini've never celebrated halloween (too bad none of you live around here - jacksonville fl), but for whatever reason, i have alot of good memories from the anticipation of the various holidays as a child (i'm originally from a state that actually had seasons), even though we as jw's did'nt participate.
i still remember being at friends' houses, seeing them apparently happy and found myself wishing that i could have something to look forward too that was fun and not just the memorial (such a solemn occasion).
i have swore to myself that when (and if) i ever have children that i will celebrate them (the holidays + birthdays) as would want them to have some of the memories that i was denied.. am i making too much of this?.

I usually have a fun night involving parties at various friends homes, visiting the local watering holes and generally having a great time!
This year is a bit different. I'll be going to the coast with my gf and couple of friends. We most likely won't dress up, just have a fun weekend hanging out and enjoying each others' company.

apparently, according to the god's love book, a wife could consider legal separation from her husband if she is physically abused, but (get this) only in the case of extreme physical abuse, and if the wife's life is in danger.

When you consider that the entire populace of the borg is basically used to being in an abusive relationship with their religion and their god, this isn't that shocking. From an outside perspective though, it's absolutely infuriating! The cycle of abuse is already a difficult and stigmatic one to be in and damn tough to break out of, this kind of bullshit from "leadership" makes it that much worse. Honestly, this kind of treatment of women is much of why I can't stomach the idea of returning to the borg EVER!

Should I Formally Apologize?

i still have pangs of guilt.
yet, on balance, i have to admit that it couldn't have been too damaging as they are all totally out of the cult.

Formal or informal, it seems from your post that you need to apologize for you. Like the others said, it'll be cathartic and will help in your own healing process. I think it says alot that you've reached this point and can view your history (and your part in it) objectively.
So, do it and congrats on your personal growth!

Swine Flu
by purplesofa inwell, i was wondering if anyone here has had swine flu?.
i got it last week.. my son, daughter and granddaughter have it now.. jada was sent to the emergency room at the childrens hospitol here yesterday.
her symptoms were bad and she is under two.. so they sent her there.. the entire emergency room staff, security etc were wearing masks.. apparently it is getting worse here, the amount of cases.. it was a brutal sickness, i can't imagine babies and elderly dealing with it well at all.. although, i got sick with the symptoms a week ago, i feel very weak and tired and have a terrible cough still.. i read on one site the symptoms being disorientation and confusion, which i experianced.. has anyone here had it, how did you survive it?.
