Why? Why? Why???
by zeroday inwhy do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are getting weak?
why do banks charge a fee on "insufficient funds" when they know there is not enough?
why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?

Unc...How are you going to do it?
A yokel agreeing that too much skoolin only makes your head hurt ?
A Professor of Religious Studies advising that his words have been included in next semester's curriculum for students to study ?

Big claims made that simply arn't true
by drew sagan ina number of posts on the board have got me thinking back to the time when i first became aquainted with jehovhah's witnesses.
many things that i was told (an probably no doubt many of you) where the ramblings of people are so dedicated to their religious system that it clouds all basic judgement.
here are some of the things i was told by certain members (mostly elders) that have panned out to be actual lies.

Drew....
In the short time I've been here the best phrase that I have learned is "cognitive dissadance".( I hope that I spelt that correctly.)
It has helped me understand (and forgive) many in the WTS. I am talking family.
What you say is obviously correct but how do you get the inmates to see it?

": I think it gave JWs a bad imagine because for the most part it was about nature and personal experience and not doomsday enough."
I would have thought that this is why the Awake is important. It gave a soft approach at the door. In my day you would always present the "harmless" Awake, hopefully to lead into the heavier stuff later.
(I shall never forget being with an Elder in the magazine work as he explained to a feeble old lady in her 70s how important it was for motorists to look in their rear vision mirrors whilst driving.)

My small but hopefully mighty note to the newspaper
by merfi init's not terribly impressive, but given the small size of this town and the small number of pubs at the kh, this might be relatively huge.. i just emailed this to the newspaper editor today:i gave blood tuesday, april 4th for the first time.
somewhere, someone's life might be saved by my donation.
i work at **** hospital*** and have seen blood used to bring color to someone's granny's cheeks, to help a new mom recover from a difficult childbirth and to give a young man with cancer a higher count so that he can receive chemotherapy and continue his fight.

Merfi....That was a really well written letter. Positive and encouraging - not vindictive. Your community will be proud of you (although that is not the reason for your writing it).
We look forward to hearing if it is published and the response from your community in the weeks ahead.
Anyway...who cares about any effect on the local JWs. By donating blood you did something that made this world a better place.....Good on ya.......

Non moi.
I spent four years at High School studying French..When I finally got to meet an actual French person in a bar at Kings Cross at Sydney I recited "Le Mort de Loup" by Alfred de Vigney to him and he couldn't understand a bloody word I said. I may have been drunk.
But at least I know what "petite pois" means on a menu...so it wasn't a waste of time.

To newbies: You give up your rights when you become a Witness
by MsMcDucket ini was sitting here thinking: am i making fun of my children's religion?
am i being disrespectful to witnesses?
i was raised to be accepting of other people's religious choices.

Love 2 Be......
The Beatles actually came to Brisbane, Australia, in '64. And I saw them live.
They had contracted to come to Australia just before they became super big time. And they kept the deal. They played at Festival Hall which held about 5,000 people. About 4 or 5 gigs.
Ringo was absent....can't recall the name of the stand-in...The support on my night was 6 or 8 saxaphone players - "Sounds Incorporated". They had different supports every night.
I took the prettiest little dubbie chick along with me...Lyn Parnell. She was so cool. She wore artificial fingernails. (I never realised until one fell off as we were sharing a brand new drink called a Cuppachino). I wore my best suit and tie and was a bit embarassed when she stood on the seat and screamed.
Memories.......
