Of all the challenges I faced at Bethel (Brooklyn, early 1980s), food was certainly not one of them.
Food was great! As a married couple, we would 'glean' and use the Thomas' English Muffins (abundant in the commissary) and ....it was all good.
an ex bethelite has made a video about the food that was provided at hq's.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxbe9hacqxu.
towards the end he talks about the new arrangements with the cutbacks.for breakfast if you had served a certain amount of time at bethel or were old enough you could choose whether you wanted to attend breakfast/morning worship or not.
first year bethels were made to attend to ensure they were watching the morning worship.

the money grab continues!!
at a very recent circuit assembly (usa), the accounts overseer gave the typical accounts report for the ca in the early afternoon.
there were 2100 people at the assembly.
borrowing against the buildings
If the loans were secured (almost certainly they would be) then a mortgage or lien or other instrument would be recorded in the public records....or however such encumbrances are made choate in that jurisdiction.
'Insider information' should not be necessary.

at 5:00 there is a screen capture of someone who mentions "jehovah our god" on a video about the "n word.".

video topic aside, if she's an active jw...she probably shouldn't we wading into this pool..
No idea what happened. Evidently it was there for resolute Bandicoot?

hey guys, i'm working on a paper about exploitation amongst jehovah's witnesses ( i'm also preparing a book about jehovah's witnesses and interaction ritual theory, and another paper about jehovah's witnesses and discrimination against women).
i'm trying to calculate as exact figures as i can concerning how much bethelites are paid.
does anyone know the monthly stipend as of now?
In 1983 I was in Brooklyn and it was $75 and maybe in 1985 it went to $90? Perhaps someone can confirm the timing of the jump but in 1983 it was $75 (almost positive).
I was married at the time so we had TWO stipends.....plus we would catch a ride to the congregation meetings/service so....saved there as well.
Another piece of the Bethelites' financial picture was G-Jobs. We did cleaning on occasion (2X per month) and used our vacation to hang Sheetrock or whatever we could find.
There was also the loving provision of gleaning and the stale English Muffins which sustained us.
i actually had a neighbor ask me that the other day (she knows i'm an "ex" jw) and i didn't really know the answer.
i know there's a bit of cart witnessing going on (small town) and a lot of driving around to return visits.. but are they actually doing territory, not-at-homes, all of that?
the neighbor said that eight years ago, when she bought her house, the jws were by "all the time".
A few weeks ago a local FakeBook group was discussing the JWs going door-to-door. I joined (albeit a little tardy) with the pedophile information.
This is how some folks in my very rural Connecticut town feel about the JWs:
March 31 at 10:39am
Good morning, today is a beautiful day and brings out sunshine and warmth, and also apparently Jehovah witnesses that ignore your private property and dangerous dog signs in your yard. Just a fair warning .
Puppies and daffodils
But my puppies don’t like uninvited guests on our property, signs are everywhere .
pretty sure trespassers aren’t on Facebook
but people that may want to bring their dogs in if someone comes on their property and ignores their sign might be on Facebook.
My brother's dog got pepper sprayed a few weeks ago by Jehovah's witnesses. Knowing that people are going around town today makes me more aware of what my animals are doing.
thats so messed up!!!
what?????....if anyone comes to my house today I will answer the door and tell them to spray me and see what will happen... I'll make sure they know we are aware of thier abuse of animals
they pepper sprayed one of God's creatures??? Oh the irony! (That's awful, they shouldn't trespass)
I appreciated the heads up on Facebook! Thank you!
that is b.s. if that dog was on his own property.those freaks are trespassing!
This is just so wrong, esp. on Easter Weekend and Passover..I guess it is time to crank Hell's Bells and have it replay. 😉
Yessssss!!!
Or I knew someone that would bring her bible to the door and try to preach to them. Worked every time 🙂
I'm fortunate to never get visitors, because they think I'm the devil. 😁
While I understand it is a requirement for them to spread their word...using pepper spray on an animal when you are on private property UNINVITED is totally wrong .
Not cool @ all !! They better not even think about making a visit :(
When they come, I answer the door naked. Scares the hell out of them.
[NAME] and Everyone.. It seems like the JW usually stop in, uninvited, at some of the most inconvenient times. Several years ago, I politely asked them to remove our address from their Visitors' List. They haven't been back since.
From what I heard from a former co-worker that is a Jehovah's witness, they have to go door-to-door, but if you ask them to not come back they have to respect that.
Sadly some dont. We get many repeaters
Last time they came to my house I asked him if he could come back later cuz I was busy sacrificing a goat.... Haven't heard from them in years lol
Tell them to put you on thier "do not call" list.
You can try to hide, but they'll know. That will just get you on thier "home but hiding" list, and they'll be back.
If they ever met my Boys with Pepper Spray, then they can expect something in kind. I've never met any JW's that were more than respectable, But if they"ve become more intrusive than their past...well I'm, ready.
I wasn't home but heard there were 2 older ladies that came to my house last week...front walk wasn't shoveled so they came right up our back deck....my son very nicely told them we weren't interested, as he held the barking dobie😄
Jehovah's Witnesses have a problem
with pedophiles. In a nutshell, their rules require “two witnesses” to the
abuse so, if a child reports abuse and no one else saw it (very likely, think
about it) then the congregation does zero. I think they have recently started
allowing (in some countries) the victims to report the abuse to the
authorities. Until very recently, the abused would be shunned if they reported
to authorities. This is being investigated all over the world including Canada
(https://www.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=1355008)
and Australia (https://www.washingtonpost.com/.../australian.../...).
Many abusers are listed here: http://www.silentlambs.org/…
not certain if any are in [OUR TOWN] area.
In a recent court case the ‘central pedophile database’ held by the Watchtower
was ordered to be turned over (25K plus names) and Watchtower refused. They
were fined $4K per day). It is a huge problem that they have swept under the
rug.
Most Jehovah’s Witness are very nice people. I have family who are JWs. Some,
however, are far from “nice” and they may be knocking at your door offering to
‘study the bible with your children.’
Thank you for sharing that [NAME].
Harboring pedafiles to protect thier organization's reputation is backfiring spectacularly.
Edit: Sorry that it lost the lines between posters. it's fairly obvious and...very mundane but a view on the D2D work.
i think this would be a noble endeavour..
Agree with JeffT, Morpheus, and Recovering
If I wanted a new boss (same as the old boss) I would not have left the religion to begin with.
Lots of folks have assisted others. A couple of years after leaving (or at least PIMO), I found H2O and there were myriads and myriads of warriors that assisted.
VW.org wrote about John Cedars
And also like his friendly attitude to current JWs so as to gain their attention.
What has John Cedars added that is unique to the chorus that has come long before him? Understood that he helped you personally (a good thing) but doubtful many active JWs are watching his videos ...but I don't know....maybe they are. He comes across, to me, as smarmy and car-salesman-ish ...but that's just me.
This is the bit that caught my attention:
Now I am totally in agreement with his views
As several have mentioned, that's the last thing any of us need.... a new "charismatic" thought leader....and one who needs just a little more money to reach others to an even greater extent.
Just my two cents.
there are many terms used at bethel that might sound foreign to normal people.
there are many words or terms used at bethel that are unique only to their organization.
here are just a few of them.. “a jack” this is someone who is a slacker or just lazy.. “a pot licker” this term has been used for many years but its connotation is unclear.
"Flag Brother"
Someone who hopper shopped, or had a field day in "donated," would assemble an outfit with many colors that resembled a "flag."
Usually it'd be a new boy and the term was probably as much a comment on their new boy status as it was on their fashion sense.
Sometimes, it seems, brothers would come from very poor backgrounds and the opportunity to parade in "new" clothes trumped any fashion sense they might have had.
It was derogatory and unkind but....heard it many times. I worked in 25-30 so would pass through donated area often (especially when it was poor weather).
i must go through six of new verification screens on average before verifying.
i seriously try harder and harder, i don't know if we include the tiny little piece of sign or not.
i have done both, and still get another screen.
Beyond annoying. I constantly clear cookies, history, cache, etc. (every session) which, as noted, means I have to sign in to this site again...so I rarely do. If I send or receive a PM, I log in.
Some sites have very simple CAPTCHA "challenges" so perhaps one can set "level of difficulty" or something? For example, some sites have only numbers that are visually distorted.
I'm guessing there is a good reason to have a CAPTCHA at the gate of this site (?) but...it does lessen the likelihood of signing in, for me at least.
My bank has several layers of authentication (credentials and the answer to a "secret" question). Perhaps that would be a more acceptable (or at least a less frustrating) solution?
