I have no problem with it. When they say that, they mean well (unless of course they were praying for my downfall ). I just say "thank you", and silently wonder why they think a god who supposedly already knows what they are thinking needs to be told what he already knows they are thinking.

I'll Pray for you. What's your feelings when someone says that to you?
by El Kabong infor those of us who left organized religion, how does it make you feel when a xtian says they will pray for you because you don't believe the same as they do?
personally, in my opinion, that is a very obnoxious statement, especially if i don't ask or want someone to pray for me.
to me, that's saying that i am wrong and they are right, and they are praying to god that i will see things their way.

Quit School / Encouraged not to go to college/ unit
by shamus inhow many of you quit school b/c of the religion?
another question - how many of you did not go on to college / uni b/c of the religion?.
do you regret it?.

Despite being in a third generation, pretty straight laced JW family, I've never had to defend my choice of going to college to any of my JW relatives (including the nauseatingly hard core ones). My dad went to college, so maybe that helped my situation.
One more year of school before I get my undergraduate degree now.

gcc2k, I like that song by XTC myself. I never thought of it as an anthem, though.
Dear God
Dear God,
hope you got the letter, and...
I pray you can make it better down here.
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
but all the people that you made in your image, see
them starving on their feet 'cause they don't get
enough to eat from God, I can't believe in youDear God, sorry to disturb you, but... I feel that I should be heard
loud and clear. We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
and all the people that you made in your image, see them fighting
in the street 'cause they can't make opinions meet about God,
I can't believe in youDid you make disease, and the diamond blue? Did you make
mankind after we made you? And the devil too...Dear God, don't know if you noticed, but... your name is on
a lot of quotes in this book, and us crazy humans wrote it, you
should take a look, and all the people that you made in your
image still believing that junk is true. Well I know it ain't, and
so do you, dear God, I can't believe in I don't believe inI won't believe in heaven and hell. No saints, no sinners, no
devil as well. No pearly gates, no thorny crown. You're always
letting us humans down. The wars you bring, the babes you
drown. Those lost at sea and never found, and it's the same the
whole world 'round. The hurt I see helps to compound that
Father, Son and Holy Ghost is just somebody's unholy hoax,
and if you're up there you'd perceive that my heart's here upon
my sleeve. If there's one thing I don't believe init's you... Dear God.

Assembly Food
by El Kabong inwhat are some of the foods you remember being served at district and circuit assemblies.
i remember every sunday was roast chicken.

I actually kind of liked the food. Next to the drama(s), lunch was the highlight of the program .
The cheese danishes were definitely my favourite, followed by the Lays potato chips. Some of the sandwiches were dry, but not all of them. Shasta wasn't Coke or Pepsi, but it was tolerable for 3 days. I remember sometimes eating during the session, right after the chairman had made the point in his announcements that we should not be eating during the sessions. What control freaks.

I got this email recently from a JW friend:
One Person's Sobering Experience (please read)
I've recently had a very thought provoking experience.
I was playing basketball with some guys I used to know from High school.
Like all basketball players we were talking trash.
I noticed there was a DRESS SUIT hanging up on the fence.
So I said to one of the guys (who I knew from high school),
"After I finish beating you.. why don't you put on your suit and head
home."
He then replied, "You know that's YOUR suit from pioneering!. "
I wondered to myself how does he know about pioneering.
So after the game I questioned him.
"What do you know about pioneering?"
By this time one of his friends had walked over.
They looked at each other and said
" We know a lot about your religion . . .
" I thought perhaps they may have studied before.
SO I QUESTIONED THEM SOME MORE
AND... I FOUND OUT THEY HAD STUDIED BEFORE.
BUT THIS WHAT REALLY SHOCKED ME ABOUT THEIR STUDYING HABITS.
They would only pretend that they were interested in studying,
and would only ask young single pioneer sisters to help them learn more
about
Jehovah.
Once they gained their trust they would then convince the spiritually
weak
girls
to fornicate with them.
I thought to myself....these guys only wish they were able to do that to
our
sisters.
I could not penetrate the spiritual ranks of our dear sisters in that
way.
But then these guys started to name sisters who I personally knew,
and who were disfellowshipped because of engaging in immortality with
them.
.
Afterwards, they were laughing and bragging about what they had
accomplished..
One guy said " Do you know how many I took out of the religion already"
Those evil words stabbed me and stayed with me for a while.
I thought to myself it must be tough, to be a Christian sister.
I mean, after all no one wants to be physically, emotionally or even
spiritually alone.
And some times many baptized brothers may not be eligible for a marriage
partner.
But how could they let their guard down for such low-life men in the
world.
BUT THE TRUTH IS
Can you trust someone who is not a dedicated servant of Jehovah....
not to say all our Christian brothers are perfect.
But there are alot of predators who only goal is to destroy your
relationship
with Jehovah.
(And this counsel also equally applies to our Christian brothers).
Conversely there are a lot of sincere people honestly seeking the truth.
The faithful and discreet slave class suggest if we were out in the
ministry
and ran into some one of the opposite sex who is interested,
we should turn the call over to someone qualified and of the same sex.
This is really good counsel as well as common sense.
Consider why you need to apply this counsel, my good friends.
The main reason should apply it is the love you have for Jehovah. Now my friend got it from a second hand source himself, so he can't verify whether it's true or not, but I strongly suspect this is made up, of course. There are many things that can be said about this story, but the first thing I thought was "why is someone carrying a suit with them while playing basketball?".

it is so much easier living with "I don't know all the answers" than it is to feel like "I know all the answers and they suck"
Well said, Xena.
You want to get in touch with something "inside of you"? I thought you said you've left the hedonistic life?

Who reads regularly
by Jayson inhow many of you read at least one newspaper every day?
does anyone read more than one newspaper daily?
-
crownboy
Yup, I read a lot on an eclectic range of topics. Newspapers for me are mainly a source of keeping up with the local sports teams. I read the news from several sources, but I frequent this one the most:
I try to read the NY Times online as much as I can, as well.
