It has got to the level of the perenial cartoon subject - A strange person on the sidewalk holding a sign "The world will End Tomorrow!" passerby says, "he's been standing there everyday for the last 10 years"

Preaching is a waste of time
by konceptual99 inbefore anyone gives me the "bears/wood" similarities, this is a post based on insidethekh's reply on the mormon v jw thread.
(http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/beliefs/287545/1/who-is-copying-who-jws-or-mormons) i like to see wt friendly posts on here as some of the wt bashing displays the same logical fallacies as levelled against the wts and it's followers so it's good to consider reasoned debate.. on the one hand i think itkh makes a fair point if you compare the worldwide success of mormons v jws but there is an overall context to the preaching work that is completely ignored by those fully "in" and has been a major factor in my move from being an active witness to one on the cusp of getting out.
from a statistical point of view there are great headline numbers presented by the wts but if you put them in the context of the number of witnesses, conversation ratios, ratio of new witnesses to birth rates, numbers that must be leaving, growth differentials across the globe, penetration in muslim nations and so on then these numbers become meaningless.

Why do self-righteous hypocritical people ...
by hoser inwhy is it that people who display self-righteous hypocritical behaviour are so blind as not to see what kind of people they really are?.

Once in a while these types will have a moment of clarity. Call it an epiphany if you will.
Then the size of their ego will be tested.

The Jonestown Massacre, Remembered
by Londo111 inhttp://time.com/3583781/jonestown-massacre/.
it was 36 years ago today.. the watchtower has caused far more deaths due to the blood transfusion ban and the suicides from disfellowshipping.
unfortunately, these deaths are mostly invisible to the public, since they didnat occur at once and in one location.. .

I truly feel that the essence of the WTB&TS boils down to the same kind of control that Jones had.

I have seen so many incidents where the DFing of someone led to a variety of degrees of shunning. Most of it was based on the personal relationship with close friends and relatives. The latter seemed to be the most severe. Many resentful relatives with ISSUES used the DFing to allow absolutely disgusting, ugly behaviour.
An example is when a close family member passes away the JW relatives won't even tell them and would make it clear that they were not welcome at the memorial service. This is way beyond what the WT called for. It was personal animosity against someone that would leave the club.

Doctors and surgeons say no to blood transfusions
by Mr Negative inmy mum recently told me that even surgeons won't have blood transfusions, but the common people don't get told this.
i have also seen or heard others say that a bunch of doctors/health officials/surgeons were asked, at some point, if they would accept a blood transfusion and they all said no.
is this true?

The Watchtower always made it clear that the prohibition of blood was NOT based on any practical health benefit (although they always brought it up) but was based strictly on God's law of the sanctity of blood. They covered all bases.

I personally knew and/or was related to 4 people who refused blood for themselves or dependants who might die without blood. My wife was one of them during her first childbirth. Her doctor made no bones about it. He felt she needed at least 2 units of blood to get her out of danger. My Grandmother was another with a bleeding ulcer that had not been treated for too long. Her Doctor pleaded with my Aunt and Uncle but they flatly refused to allow it.
Yes, they survived. (Which my Aunt and Uncle smugly knew was because of Jah. wink wink)
Fortunately, I was not a direct party to any deaths resulting from the doctrine. But I was just lucky.
I thought about this very seriously when the horror of the Jonestown mass murder by suicide happened 36 yeras ago.
What if we were told to drink a cup of cyanide laced fruit punch?

creating planets how does it work?
by Crazyguy ini read that many believe planet's start out as large rocks that create some gravity there by attracting more asteroids, then comets etc and become larger and larger until its a planet.
ok but how do the explain the rotation or spinning of the planet and the energy that a planet has ie lava etc.

Jesus gave Jehovah a huge box of Play-Doh for his 100 billionth birthday.
The rest is history
Oh, yeah. After the planets were made the Jesus gave Him a set of Chia Pet kits.
The rest is history
Oh, and then Jesus gave him a package of Sea-Monkeys.
The rest is history

It had a major impact on me and my family. Our daughter was born on the eleventh of Novemeber 1978 and a few days later the Jonestown tragedy occurred.
It was about this time that I was starting to privately question the entire JW scheme. Being a born-in and an elder who was supposed to enforce all the strange, obnoxious sex rules coming from the big publishing company in NY.
As the Jonestown event came to light more and more I began to draw parallels with the raw control of Jim Jones and the same level of control by the WTB&TS.

Michael Brown verdict discussion policy
by Simon init's likely that the grand jury verdict on the michael brown incident will be released in the coming days or weeks.. i've no doubt many people are going to feel strongly about things whatever the verdict is.. whatever the outcome though, here's what's not going to happen:.
we're not going to put up with inflamatory language and comments designed to rile others up.
be respectful.. we will not allow accusations of racism simply because some have a view of the verdict that contradicts others.. there will not be invented evidence or claims being repeated - if it's been falsely reported or debunked then it's off limits.. it's not going to be an opportunity for people to air past gripes over past discussions.. if you feel that you cannot discuss the subject in a rational way then it may be better to simply avoid any topics on the matter.. please try to be objective and respectful if you do decide to comment and not keen to take offense.

The suspense is getting painful for those waiting to get some $300.00 sneakers or maybe a big screen TV.

A fascinating invention is being tested here in our little village.
by Gregor init is a beautifully simple machine that produces electricity from moving water.. we live on the columbia river 3 miles above the huge bonneville dam hydro-electric installation.. we have an abandoned lock that was built about one hundred years ago to lift river traffic around the rapids formed thousands of years ago when the naturally formed bridge of the gods collapsed.
the river now flows through it next to thunder island.. recently, an experimental device called the "eco-auger" was lowered into the locks current to begin tests of the beta model.
it is about the size of a small school bus.
