Insane religious banter!
by free2beme in"he will kill the wicked" ... "jesus is coming to bring down the unrighteous" ... "you shall know his wrath" .... "you will burn in hell!".
my father had a renter in one of his houses, who was a whacked out christian.
when she moved out, she wrote these kinds of things all over the walls and we had to repaint the entire house to get it cleaned up.

When will people "stop" relying on "churches and religions" for happiness?
by booker-t init just breaks my heart when i read some of the posts on this websites and hear all of the horror stories about people and families suffering because of what the church or religion did to them.
not just jw's or mormons, but catholics, born-agains are also included in this group.
i bet you could find just as many disgruntle ex-catholics and ex-born-agains out in the world who have been severly hurt by their church.

I said "It works for a lot of people. Not me."
I don't see that as a terribly harsh attack on believers. Why are you so thin skinned and defensive? For what it's worth, I really don't care what you believe. In fact, I hope it continues to work for you. There are a whole lot worse things to live by than simple vanilla Christianity.
Peace Lil.
I'm sure we could be friends

Hush Money
by What-A-Coincidence ini see many threads about bethel paying out bethelites as they leave to keep in quiet - aka: hush money.
i don't believe it was hush $ in ray franz's case...it was more like "here is something for you to get started".
so i don't think anyone has been "paid.

I would know nothing of the subject of 'hush' money. Scully refers to a specific case that sounds like it was money offered to avoid litigation and the publicity associated with it.
But you said something that I feel strongly about. That is, reckless, irrelevant and pointless accusations. The WTS has enough real faults, inconsistencies and dirty laundry to be discredited a hundred times over. When we focus on anecdotal stories about individuals who were/are pricks and a-holes it really weakens our position. As an example, I point to our dear Danny Hazzard. He obviously got caught in the gears of a local cong. that did him a terrible injustice. But I don't think his basic experience is that hard to find duplicated in almost any small closed group, whether it's the JWs, the local school board or city council, Pentecostal church, etc. where individual personalities and egos can clash. Try getting a small church committee together to decide what color to paint the building and watch the fur fly!
There was a post yesterday from Cold Red Rain that made me cringe. Apparently he got drunk, went to the KH and started a physical altercation with a JW. We don't need that shit!
If redundant Bethelites are being some money to get out of town, so what? We have bigger fish to fry with the org. than that.

It is a human thing to want answers to all the hard questions, the big one being - Why do we grow old and die?
It is also human to come up with answers. Over the centuries past one of the big, important questions was: How come we did everything just like we did last year but this year our crops were a failure? We didn't get rain. Why? or, It rained too much. Why? We had a big hailstorm just as the corn was most fragile. Why? Going hungry or even starving to death was as serious as it gets. Next thing you know, people are looking to the sky as a the important source of life. Various forms of 'worship' evolved. Trying to do something that will have an impact on the forces beyond out control. This included sacrifices to appease a "somebody up there" who must be very fickle. We need to figure out what makes HIM unhappy and how to make HIM happy. It evolved into beliefs in powers beyond our control. It got organized and refined. It got corrupted and abused. But there was always an ANSWER for evrything, good or bad. Man is an answer junky.
One tribe puts together a nice little recipe that explains everything from Where did we come from to why did the crops fail. So, here comes organized Judaism which begets the messiah hope. Several hundred years later, when the jews are at their lowest ebb, messiahs start popping up everywhere. Jesus was one. 250-300 years later the whole story gets organized, some decent marketing and get some fresh material tacked onto that Old Testament which in turn helps revive that faithful little cult and viola! Hello Catholic Church! and away we go! A few centuries later Martin Luther comes along and shows everyone how they can start their own franchise with a variation on the Catholic "Jesus burger". Pretty soon the tinkerers have developed their own 'secret sauce' and come out with everything from the LDS, the Adventists, the Christian Scientists, the Russellites etc.
But the basic product is the Jesus/Savior/God come to earth/ransom payer myth.
What the hell? It works for a lot of people. Not me.

Let's not be too hard on liberals. Most of them are basically nice people. After all, they want nothing but good things for other people and they want bad things to stop happening to other people. For the most part, they believe fervently in the Golden Rule. Unfortunately, this makes them vulnerable to political causes that cynically exploit their childlike desire for everybody to 'just be nice!' . The most obvious weakness that gets exploited is their desire for the vague principle of "fairness" to be the standard of governance. They would like the world to be run like a soccer game, with umpires or referees enforceing the rules so that no one is at an unfair disadvantage. Ultimately, this sweet, childlike flaw makes them perfect pawns for a tendancy toward Socialism, historically the most unsuccessful and cruel forms of government ever implemented by mankind. I say "a tendancy toward Socialism" because the most fervent liberals thrive best under the umbrella of freedoms they enjoy under democratic, capitalist forms of government. Ironic, huh? Under real Socialist governments you don't find many true liberals because most of them have a very low standard of living and, mui importante! they might get thrown in jail or have their heads blown off or sent to the gulag if they dissent above a whisper. I could go on and on but I want to keep this short.
The bottom line is that most libs are like spoiled, naive teens. "The US government (parent) is just so screwed up!! We hate them! If only we could call the shots! It's so simple! Let's make banners and go downtown and protest!" Afterwards we can go to a concert and then go home to our comfortable home and listen to our wonderful liberal music and watch TV and thaw a pizza (if those stupid parents remembered to stock the kind I like!).
Yes, it's hard to argue that peace is better than war. The problem is getting your enemies to agree. Otherwise, they will just come and kill you and take your stuff. It's as simple as that, kids.
Then they go back to theirwarm room to

Is there a doctrinal change afoot in the WTBTS?
by Gill inis the wtbts preparing the r and f for a large doctrinal change?.
the july 15th watchtower is dealing with murmuring?.
subheadings 'an evil assembly murmurs against jehovah'.

Gregor
Thanks Gill.
Yes, as has been noted by others above, this is an old tactic of the org. They explain away their 'refinements' as new light. They give themselves the luxury of having it both ways:
A. "We are the Faithful and Discreet Slave. What we say is TRUTH. It is SPIRITUAL FOOD IN DUE SEASON. If you do not agree with our doctrines or policies and speak out, you will be disfellowshipped (a death sentence if you do not reform and crawl back before Armageddon)."
B. "Hey, come on, we never said we were perfect, we're going the best we can. Jehoober is gradually getting us dialed in. Please be patient. Even if you figure out we've made a mistake before we can officially correct it you should just bite your tongue and wait."
BIG problem with A & B is that I have never seen the org. publish an apology to those disfellowshipped for 'apostasy' over past disagreements where the DF'd was CORRECT and the org. was WRONG. Something like- "Please, forgive us. You were right and we were wrong. You should never have been shunned. In fact, we'd like your input on more stuff since you showed how you figured this out before we did."
That'll be the day

Liberalism is not so much a political position as an emotional one. Thus the inconsistency and vulnerability to being manipulated. As someone said, liberalism is a mental illness.

Do you run after garage sales?
by JH in.
i see them all over town, and i never stop at one.
seems to me that only junk is displayed, most of the times..

A brother who was a good friend of mine used to hold a garage sale about once a month. He would buy broken stuff and repair it but his main source of "inventory" came from dumpster diving behind various kinds of stores. He went out almost every night on his rounds. Between his Garage sales and selling his cartoons to mags. he owned his home and raised 4 kids. Sadly, he dropped dead of a heart attack one night in an alley next to a dumpster, he was only 39.

Yes, there are so many things we used to take for granted, fresh tomatoes etc. My grandkids don't even like tomatoes and I don't blame them! Too bad. But mangos in Oregon or New England are really pushing it. No way we could grow them locally. (I don't know where you are in New England but here in Portland we are about 30 miles further north than Montreal!) I really think they have to ripen at home over a longer period of time. As you say, probably picked very green in Mexico or wherever in the far south.
By the way, I was mistaken about the price here, My wife, who is the shopper, says they are only about .59 cents (not .89) each.
Well, this is an unusual thread for a XJW site. They probably think they'll all have a mango tree in there garden in N. Dakota in the New World!
