I think a lot of them do "get it" if by that you mean they get that the "trooth" is NOT the truth.

Lotsa reasons to stay in the borg that has nothing to do with really believing in it. I beleive that for many, they simply lack the courage to disengage from the pain that is familiar and jump into the unknown. Many people stay stuck in marriages and jobs that they hate for the same reasons. Throw in the notion of being a big frog in a tiny pond - and it is really not that complicated.

An interesting question would be - of the 6 million, how many really and truly believe it? I felt for a long time that if Armageddon ever really happened, JWs would be of the 'Most Surprised' class.................

It is an insulting question! It implies that without your version of god there's nothing in life worth living!

Yup, I rest my case. As Freud said, "sometimes a cigar is just cigar" (not necessarily a phallic symbol). In this case, I think the question was sincere without any hidden implications.

Not at all a stupid question and I can not add anything to the great answers already given.

But about the insulting comment: I can only think that someone is overly sensitive to the notion that without the WTS and Jehover life is empty and meaningless. When I was a little girl and heard about someone being disfellowshipped, I got this mental picture of a tragic, depraved individual in rags, with bloodshot eyes, sitting in a dark, dank cave somewhere, smoking something vile and mumbling incantations to Satan. These images have been purposely implied by the brainwashing machinations of the WTS. As I have said before, the most frequent question I got from JW's after I left was "if this isn't the truth, then what is?" I didn't know - and I still don't - but the WTS sure isn't it.

As Barbara Harrison titled a chapter in her JW book - "The Lure of Certainty" - JWs have been conditioned to need - desperately - to have some inside track and feel superior to others. They just have to KNOW - they are uncomfortable with an open mind. It feels too ....................empty.

Gregor: That's easy, you have OCD, Obsessive Christmastree Disorder. The classic symptom is feeling like a yo-yo on a rollercoaster which is not only annoying but dangerous, especially when the coaster is going down and the yo-yo is going up, ouch! Sometimes I feel like a Scotch and soda on an airplane but that's something entirely different.
One solution is to get your ass back in the TRUTH and quit celebrating pagan holidays (except halloween of course which is cool).

Naturist: Why should people with genuine doubts feel the need to hide them from their peers? Why should the price of "fellowship" be blind and unquestioned faith?

Are you serious? Or being ironic? I can tell you, I had very 'serious doubts' that I could not share with anyone - my whole way of life as I knew it was in jeopardy. Having been raised as a JW by parents who were raised as JW's - I became the first to jump ship out of a large, close family (2 parents, 2 sibs, 4 grandparents, 6 uncles, 6 aunts, 20+cousins, etc.)*

I did a fade. I ('temporarily' of course) cancelled my magazine order and took a hiatus from the MS - the literature servant teasingly said "Crystal's falling out of the truth." I thought - "if you only knew." Those were tough times - I lost the fellowship of friends and family - some forever - some for a few years, until they came out. Now I have both sibs, mother and several cousins with me.

*Technically, the first was a gay cousin who was mysteriously dismissed from Bethel and literally disappeared. But I don't think it was by informed choice.
