hubby has just come back from the service meeting where they have been handed out brand new style blood cards, now called 'advance decision to refuse specified medical treatment' .
it's quite a bit different.
and has the line on it about giving permission to the hospital liason committee to see your notes and medical records.. very scary stuff i think, and i certainly wont be filling one in.. i'm really short of time tonight, but will scan it in, along with the notes that go with it and try and post it some time over the next day or so if someone else doesn't beat me to it!.
doctors say that 50% of JWs will secretly accept blood products while putting on a "No Blood!" show for any JWs who may be present.
I work at a medical reseach facility and was chatting with one of the nurses about the blood issue and JWs. She quite matter of factly said "Oh, a lot of the JWs cave." I know this is not news to most of you, but it struck me as sad - how the JWs are put in such a horrible, untenable situation.

Jeff, I agree that this is the essential question. However, there is no answer without reading an entire bookshelf full of smarmy little books with colorful bindings. And after you've read all that, it still makes no sense that God would choose such a bunch of clueless knotheads to communicate His thoughts to mankind.

I think a lot of them do "get it" if by that you mean they get that the "trooth" is NOT the truth.
Lotsa reasons to stay in the borg that has nothing to do with really believing in it. I beleive that for many, they simply lack the courage to disengage from the pain that is familiar and jump into the unknown. Many people stay stuck in marriages and jobs that they hate for the same reasons. Throw in the notion of being a big frog in a tiny pond - and it is really not that complicated.
An interesting question would be - of the 6 million, how many really and truly believe it? I felt for a long time that if Armageddon ever really happened, JWs would be of the 'Most Surprised' class.................

Not at all a stupid question and I can not add anything to the great answers already given.
But about the insulting comment: I can only think that someone is overly sensitive to the notion that without the WTS and Jehover life is empty and meaningless. When I was a little girl and heard about someone being disfellowshipped, I got this mental picture of a tragic, depraved individual in rags, with bloodshot eyes, sitting in a dark, dank cave somewhere, smoking something vile and mumbling incantations to Satan. These images have been purposely implied by the brainwashing machinations of the WTS. As I have said before, the most frequent question I got from JW's after I left was "if this isn't the truth, then what is?" I didn't know - and I still don't - but the WTS sure isn't it.
As Barbara Harrison titled a chapter in her JW book - "The Lure of Certainty" - JWs have been conditioned to need - desperately - to have some inside track and feel superior to others. They just have to KNOW - they are uncomfortable with an open mind. It feels too ....................empty.
