In some countries people are required to go to the polls. JW's go to the polls, but they don't actually vote. That's their conscience matter.
Thousands of brothers and sisters had been persecuted because they didn`t vote in the 70ies, though strong obligation - see MALAWI. All martyrdom was in vain.

i could never accept that i deserved salvation whereas almost no one else did.
it put me on permanent spiritual edge because i thought the slave is right so the doctrine of destruction must be, but my heart always knew it was wrong.

Nonsense. How could GOD be obliged to use violence? How could GOD be obliged to do something at all? Or: Who could induce HIM to be obliged to do something?

During Rutherfords reign they began to learn mathematics, and they found, that the planet with the new society cannot nourish and bear more than about 20 billions of people. They realized, that the number of all human beings ever have been living in all 6000 years here on earth is perhaps more than 20 billions. Now, when all dead persons are resurrected at the end of the thousand years, the planet would be hopelessly overcrowded. So they changed their view. 20 billions minus 6 billions result in 14 billions. And that`s a tolerable number. Excuse my cynism, please..;-((

Now, its the first time in the entire history the whole planet got divided into two hemispheres that are fighting against each other: the northern hemisphere with USA as dominant military and economy leader (with many allied countries. Russia, the former counterpart, is one of the best friends of the USA now..) - and on the other side, the southern hemisphere (the third world), consisting of many important raw material-producing countries who are ENEMIES of the northern hemisphere now.

Yes, I've heard various definitions for the new KOTN. Russian Federation, China, Korea, Iraq, Iran, Canada (hehehe), and the current speculation is Islam. I'm not sure how Islam, a religion, fits but perhaps they mean the Islamic countries acting together will form some sort of empire or confederation and become the KOTN. Anyway just a few weeks ago a friend said she thought it was Iran.
Forget all these speculations....the new KOTN is definitely the United States plus allied countries. Between 1991 and 2001(9/11 !!), the KOTN has changed from Soviet Union to USA. Extreme military power and "Patriot Act Laws" gave the USA a structure typical for totalitaristic regimes - such as "kings of the north". Islam is a religion, but no world power in the sense of a "political imperium".

" in that they will claim that their god had performed some sort of miracle in their life that brought about something amazing.
it is not always christians who say this either, as many of my "pagan" friends and myself have had spirit driven moments that were something that could not be displaced as "chance.

i was raised in the jws, but i'm still young (22) and all my life what i've been told is that the society never really promoted 1975 as the definitive year for the coming of armageddon.
what i was always told is that some overzealous witnesses took certain things out of context and developed a very extreme reaction - ie selling their houses, quitting their jobs, dropping out of school, etc.

I remember a lot of JW`s took out high loans or mortgages before (or in) 1975. They did not believe to have to pay back the money one day. Some brothers never got rid from paying and paying, and from poorness.
The mortgage and loan rates had been very high in those days. Compare those rates between 1970 and 1990 with the rates now in 2006. Its incredible and amazing...
