Again more semiauto handguns have been used in spree shootings since 1984 than rifles, shotguns, and revolvers put together. and assault rifles are a subset of rifles so its a really small number. Not defending assault rifles per say but know the facts, not that many people are killed with assault rifles. That's media illusion. -

Are we as American's even aware of how big this problem is? Do we just not care? According to this article if we weren't allowed to talk about gun control because of a mass shooting, we would never talk about it. 1,052 mass shootings in the US in the last 1,066 days. That's 4 or more people shot per instance.
It needs to be talked about, but the discussion can't stop at gun control, that is everyone's answer and the reality is the problem of mass/rampage shootings is far more complicated than just gun control.
A better question is why the steep increase in incidents and fatalities? Its not that all of the sudden there is a steep increase in gun ownership. The guns may be easy to access, but really gun access only gets stricter over time while the phenomenon of mass shootings increases every damn day. Lets look at it without any bias. Guns are not causing these people to suddenly lose their minds and copy other psychos. The problem to access to guns is not in itself causing the phenomenon.

I can counter your statement of why didn't gun control laws keep france safe with why have Australia's gun control laws worked
Because its only a matter of time before some crazy jihadist pull this crap in canada, UK, australia, etc. They already have in smaller ways, now the Paris incident is going to be copied. Gun laws are like traffic laws, they work for those who obey them. One might even say killing someone with your gun in a rampage shooting is breaking a gun law. Once you become an outlaw, all the politics in the world don't matter.
as long as their are customers there will be suppliers. legal or illegal

Finkelstein, I agree assault weapons ban is great, but again understand the problem as it relates to how often they are used in rampage shootings. Everyone assumes this is the weapon of choice in all mass shootings and that is incorrect. In fact its often NOT an assault rifle. So its fine to ban them but still is misunderstanding what is often happening in mass shootings. If you go through statistics its almost always involving handguns as the weapon of choice, sometimes shotguns are involved, sometimes rifles, and rarely Assault Rifles. That's just the reality
If gun control prevents one mass shooter from getting a weapon at all or having to 'make do' with a less efficient killing tool then that can and will save lives.
Still my point is when we have a mass shooting arms go up in the air and everyone cries "gun control" as the solution to these things. saving a life or two and solving the problem are not the same. My point is mass shootings complexity and solutions are often buried under outcries for gun control. Why just save a few extra lives when the bigger issues could be addressed and save every ones life? Then your gun control will be more effective.
* The firearms where purchased legally & registered.
But the assault rifles did not belong to these two, keep that in mind.

Mrs. Flipper makes a good point that truly belongs under a post for mass shootings.
I believe overall society is improving, but those determined to hang on to the ugly past are gonna do much uglier things as their ideas and views get more scarce.
There is just as much a mental health crisis in this country as a gun crisis. And terrorism is even a much more complex animal that can come from at least two of the Abrahamic religious ideas.
I said it before I highly recommend folks watch Mind of Rampage Killer on Netflix. Its a nova program so may be available other places. Its very enlightening.

Despite the obvious Islamic correlation not yet being drawn, there are some things to consider that make it seem near obvious.
- They are Muslim
- Disgruntled workers often don't bring wives along on their killing sprees. The two people committing this seems more jihad flavored.
- They were very well armed and dressed in tactical wear, contrary to most peoples idea of america, average people don't have these things just laying around. this was planned and deliberate.
- FBI was immediately involved.
- The hung around and waited for the ensuing fight with the cop. A double suicide attack is not a disgruntled worker.
If it looks like Mohammed, walks like Mohammed and kills like Mohamed its Islam.

The only solution is to make it more difficult to own a gun and I think most responsible gun owners want this.
They do, that is true. What will that accomplish?
- This will decrease gun deaths overall in the country
- It will not stop rampage shootings, at best it will cost the perpetrator(s) more money and maybe save them time.
There are two issues here, you can't roll rampage shooting into the big "american gun-death picture". Lets call them what they are.
When you see a staged, planned, rampage shooting make the news everyone says "See! This is why we need tighter gun control."
Its not why. Thousands more die from other shooting that are not high profile premeditated rampage shootings, and reality is gun laws will do little to affect a rampage shooter especially if they are religious extremists. Even if you could make all the guns disappear tomorrow they are going to build big bombs. They are determined to die and take others along.
My contention is not with tighter gun control, its making Rampage shootings the face of gun control. I think that diminishes the other issues at play. Some rampage shooters buy guns legally, others don't. The only reason some do it legally is because they can, if they can't they still will do it illegally if need be. Just like making drugs illegal, it doesn't make them impossible to get, just more expensive.
terrorism and rampage shootings are complex and should be treated as such. The Paris attackers seemed to have no trouble walking into a major city and pulling out bombs and AK's. They don't care about laws and politics and people's feelings. They just want to kill people by any means.

It's implied to often that America has all the same gun laws across the board and you can just walk in anywhere and anyone can buy anything (gun wise) and that simply is not true. Let's take this instance, it was in California. Not Florida or Texas.
The gun laws of California are some of the most restrictive in the United States.
A Firearm Safety Certificate, obtained by passing a written test, is required for gun purchases. Handguns sold by dealers must be "California legal" by being listed on the state's Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale. This roster, which requires handgun manufacturers to pay a fee and submit specific models for safety testing, has become progressively more stringent. Private sales of firearms must be done through a licensed dealer. All firearm sales are recorded by the state, and have a ten-day waiting period. Unlike most other states, California has no provision in its state constitution that explicitly guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms. The California Supreme Court has maintained that most of California's restrictive gun laws are constitutional, based on the fact that the state's constitution does not explicitly guarantee private citizens the right to purchase, possess, or carry firearms.
Semi-automatic firearms that the state has classified as assault weapons, .50 BMG caliber rifles, and magazines that can hold more than ten rounds of ammunition may not be sold in California. Possession of automatic firearms, and of short-barreled shotguns and rifles, is generally prohibited. -

My belief is this.
Mass shooting, be it deranged loan wolf rampage shooters, or terrorist style shooting like Paris are not a platform for gun control issues. Why do I say this?
The sheer number of gun deaths in American can be linked to the sheer number of guns. Yes
Mass shootings regardless of the religion or absence there of are in fact an act of terrorism.
What does this mean?
That means premeditate determination to cause massive harm and psychological terror. This type of act is not constrained by laws, finding the proper tools to carry out this type of act is only constrained by how much you are willing to spend. This is something i think people don't fully understand from a gun perspective or a criminal mind perspective.
How would stricter gun laws change mass shootings?
Would they make it harder to access firearms?: Yes
Will they make it impossible? abso-f-cking-lutely not.
Someone determined and psychotic enough to plan, and execute these suicide terror missions is not going to be encumbered by laws that limit magazine capacity and gun show laws. Honestly. Its not.
So I say will gun laws will reduce gun deaths in america
I also say they will have little if any baring on RAMPAGE shootings. They may add to that problem but if you spending anytime reading and watching expert info on them the real problem is way bigger and way more complex than just "guns".
There are hundreds of millions of guns in america and a lot of people who want to make a lot of money doing illegal things. Ban all guns, what ever you want its only dollars away. Gun laws wont change the customers, they will only change the suppliers.
I am not opposed to peoples thoughts and opinions on gun control, however using rampage shootings as a platform obscures other issues and capitalizes on fear and emotion.
What if every week terrorist start shooting up the streets in Europe? Its not a gun issue.
And irresponsible gun owner allowing their child to access their gun, violent crime, etc are gun ownership issues, terrorism is another issue in of itself.

*disclaimer* I am not supporting and gun lobby I am OK with stricter laws.
Note the handguns belonged to the husband and wife not the assault rifles. Just keep that in mind in the comments. That means two guns were legal and two were not in a sense. Not for them to be in possession of anyway.
