What are some things JWs re-name to make themselves different than Christians?
by NikL injws re-name things so they seem like they are different than other religions.
(of course we know they are different but that's another story).
i was just thinking about those things where they are like most everyone else in christendom but the re-name it to seem different.. for example god forbid they have a church, it's a "kingdom hall".. they don't have pastors and deacons they have "elders" and "ministerial servants".. they don't have tithing but they will have family heads fill out a paper saying how much they can contribute on a monthly basis (not sure if there is a name for that...unless it's tithing.

Are JW's Getting More Comfortable Discussing Politics?
by freemindfade injust curious if anyone else has observed a more willingness by witnesses they know to openly discuss politics (out of the context of the "truth")?
i have noticed it within my own microcosms of jws i know.. have you observed this?.
i am sure with this last years political climate it's hard for anyone to resist chiming in.

I saw one JW I know posting regularly in political discussion, and only in the context, not about how jehalapeno will soon fix it all.
Also, my mom will discuss politics quite extensively without bringing in "the truth"
I have seems some that have sort of approached it humorously, or in person actually given strong opinions.
Just a few observations. I think many do have opinions but normally keep them down

- If you have, why do you think that is?
I am sure with this last years political climate it's hard for anyone to resist chiming in. I am just seeing a trend to hear witnesses where in the past they would have not shared an actual political opinion so openly.

Was/Is Religion Useful Even if it isn't True?
by cofty inin his book "the righteous mind" jonathan haidt proposes that religion served - and continues to serve an important role in bringing about cohesion within non-kin groups.. to put it very briefly haidt advocates a form of group selection but only insofar as it applies to humans.
our unique brains have made it possible for us to cooperate in groups in ways that are impossible for all non-human species.
despite their intelligence you will never see two chimps helping each other to carry the same log or one chimp pulling down a branch while the other removes the fruit.. his description is that humans are 90% chimp and 10% bee.

Religion is a social technology it served a greater purpose in our distant past. The technology still works today... not sure we need it now though.
I would love to hear more about this, I have always been of the mind that communities thrived more because of cooperation, and oxytocin was out community hormone (hive), but religion was a non-oxytocin systematic way of tapping into the strength of the group.

Trump. Why all the banter?
by punkofnice inthere is a lot of talk about the usa's new president, mr trump.
he seems to be like what they say about marmite, people either love him or hate him.
is there any middle ground?.

Free - Self fulfilling prophecy sort of thing?
If I can say something pro trump, that I actually heard from someone very liberal, he is very good at branding. This is why I don't by into most the outrage of the MSM, they are keeping him and everything (good and bad) top headline, and you think he doesn't know this? Come on.
