Almost eight million JWs?
And how many ex-JWs do you suppose there are?
Based on what we see here, I would guess that at least 50% of JWs are just going througth the motions in order to preserve family relationships - "hostages."
an average of five kingdom halls being constructed daily, almost 8 million brothers and sisters, dissemination of bible literature in 595 languages, 111,795 congregations worldwide, distribution of 179 million bibles available in 116 languages, 239 countries where jehovah's witnesses have a presence, etc.. need i go on?.
on the other hand........... crisis of conscience, freeminds, the awaa, jw.net, ummmmmm........hmmm........idk six screens or something?
not exactly working out for you guys.

after some considerable thought i have decided that i will no longer post on this forum because i want to return to jehovah.
thank you for all the kindness and many interesting discussions over the years.
i wish you all well in the future and the decisions you make.
snare,
You nailed it.
But again, I would say that, for some, there are compelling reasons to put oneself through this weird deja vu/insincere/superemely boring exercise.
Almost beyond imagining.

Clearly, there are reasons one might return to the WTS even after learning 'the truth about the Truth' and many of them have nothing to do with a resurrection of one's belief in the WTS. (As has been illustrated so eloquently here, it's pretty hard to go back to eating at a restaurant where you have proof that the staff spits in the food.)
Most common of reasons, of course, is family pressure and I've always thought that is totally understandable and a wholy legitimate reason.
Another reason might be a need for the effortless, automatic social acceptance provided by association with the JWs. I can't understand this in any other context than a failure to create a new social milieu for oneself upon exiting the JWs - nature abhors a vacuum. (Many possible reasons for this failure - insecurity, laziness, ignorance, lack of resourcefulness.)
Our friend SBF is in one of these predicaments, maybe both.

Someone once pointed out to me (while we were commiserating over the imperviousness of still-in JWs) that, "People who joined Jehovah's Witnesses for emotional reasons will not be influenced to leave for intellectual reasons."
For those of us saddened about the departure of our dear friend SBF, maybe we should reflect on the fact that, in his own story, he makes it clear that his decision to associate with and embrace the WTS was strictly an emotional reaction to other painful circumstances in his life, at age 13:

The kicker is that SBF has presented here for the past eight years as intellectually astute, though emotionally somewhat detached. He has expressed himself with substantive remarks up until he's asked why he thinks the JWs have the truth - then it is strictly a flat statement, devoid of supporting evidence.
I think this is an important insight for those of us wondering WHY the dichotomy of SBF. The answer is in the first sentence of this post. Emotional influence is often stronger than intellectual and vice versa. Maybe we just didn't expect this particular configuration from SBF.
P.S. Deep down, he is one of us - and there is no profile of "us" to fit, other than people who have learned TTATT, period. I hope he knows that he will be welcomed back here when he is ready, whether ten days, ten months, ten years.

so i waz reading the august 15 wt study article, elisha saw fiery chariots, do you?
and it made me think about this forum.
if you remember, syria was hunting god's prophet, elisha.
When we think individually, or selfishly, we tend to see things in a skewed manner. All we see is ourselves, instead of seeing ourselves along with our brother and sisters.
Does this apply to the Governing Body? The tell us that we should go along with whatever they say even if we disagree with it or it turns out to be wrong. They clearly see themselves as separate from the rank and file brothers and sisters. They are skewing all over the place.
