Question for the nonbelievers and atheists
by nykid inwhat specifically made you stop believing in god and the bible?
was it a steady road of doubts or it was reading one book or one major event that made you realize the bible was not what it's claimed to be?.

by Skinnedsheep init is amazing to look back at three years and see the journey that we have taken.
i went from being an elder to fading completely in the course of those three years.
along the way i am happy to say that my lovely wife woke up and realized that the truth is nothing but a lie.

Is there a problem with JWN web pages ?
by Finkelstein injust wondering if anyone else is having problems with jwn pages widening .. clicking on the widen icon doesn't do anything .

LOL... I found the widen button (never used it before). Clicked it and it widened my view.
Now I cannot return to my 'normal' view. *sigh*

What drives good people to do evil things without blinking?
by EdenOne inplease read this short article and then think for a minute on how this apply to those amongst the jehovah's witnessses who enforce organizational policies that harm people (such as shunning, for example, but there are others, such as blood, rejection of higher education etc), and those who blindly comply with such pratices - both of them otherwise "nice, good people" in every other regards, and who apparently don't see anything wrong in doing something harmful, even evil, to their brethren.. what is this?
the "banality of evil", or, instead, because there's such a strong identification with a cause, people just accept they are doing the right thing simply because the authority that is regarded as legitimatly representing such cause has instructed them to do so?.
interesting thought - and this question too: if one ceases to see such "authority" as the legitimate agent of the cause, will that simple change cause the blind to finally become aware of the evil they've been enforcing / complying to?.

by sparrowdown ini'm curious, why and how did you choose your username?.
does it hold any special significance for you, is there a share-able back story?.
for me sparrowdown is a playful reference to matt 10:29 and the title of the movie black hawk down.. matt 10:29 was my go-to scrip to "prove" that god cares about us as individuals.

I dared to join this site. Still remember the sweaty palms when I saw the registration screen.
Just a few days after finding JWD (the former JWN), I was reading an unrelated article and the author used the phrase 'Aude Sapere'. It looked like a real name, but had a near perfect for me and this site. So I adopted the name as my alias here.

Russell's Gravesite Pictures - (just got back from Pittsburgh)

it was quite a interesting experience and sobering to see the pyramid right by his tombstone.

Hmmm.... I'm just outside of Pittsburgh for a few days. My very active JW sister was mentioning that she is interested in doing something WT related. Maybe I'll suggest this and make a few comments of my observations.
I remember this thread from when out was first posted. Thecarpenter came to an apostafest that I had planned and he was sharing these photos. So many years ago. Glad the thread was so easily found and revived.

"Go Where the Need is Great" - Is this phrase unique to JW's only???

almost like a secret code that just pops up in what would otherwise be a 'normal' conversation.. .
i was conducting an interview with a candidate this afternoon and she used this phrase when explaining that she travelled to various locations of a previous employer.

@Phizzy - jworgese... haha!! I like it~! And I knew *exactly* what you meant when I read it. I've known a few 'need-greaters' and all were very sincere in their motives. Some where just children, though, when their parents took up the cause to 'serve where the need was greater'. Some of those children are still staunch JWs.
@stormcrow - I agree. It seems like a phrase that *could* fit in with any situation considering the amount of projects that have a 'great need' for assistance. But, as yet, the only application I have heard was in relation to JWs. Until yesterday...
@cultBgone - Agreed. I was veering toward 'no' for this candidate anyway. Then the comment about going to 'where the need was great', pretty much made my decision final.
@naazira - Thank you. You are the first to tell me this. It seems like a phrase that 'should' fit with so many social projects so I wanted to check here. You validated my suspicions that it *might* be used elsewhere. If/when I hear it again, I may try to probe a little to know more about possible volunteer efforts rather than just assume a solid JW origin.
@SimonMorley - And such a waste. All that time, energy and money. It could have been put to better, more tangible use to help real people in need have a little better life.
The person I interviewed *could* have been a witness themselves, or... they could have just had a manager who was a JW and used that phrase when re-distributing the workforce. Or, maybe they were actually involved in some sort of social outreach/relief program. IDK. But we all know that feeling of when our ears perk up when we hear a phrase in 'real life' that is normally just heard from the platform or when in conversation with a die-hard JW.

I was conducting an interview with a candidate this afternoon and she used this phrase when explaining that she travelled to various locations of a previous employer. On any given day, she would 'go where the need was great' - to whichever office was over-booked or understaffed for the day.
I have never, ever heard this phrase used other than JWs when referring to visiting an area of unassigned or seldom-worked territory.
It caught me a little by surprise.
Has anyone here ever heard this phrase used other than by JW's?
