That's tough - there's two things:
My daughter's "blue blankie" - it's been her comforter for 6 years and has much sentimental value to me.
My grandmother's rocking chair - 3 generations of us have been rocked to sleep in that chair.
.
you can grab one thing.. before you start.....all your family, kids dogs cats pets are safe....... what would you grab from the burning flames, big "f" off flames....... just one object.....and forget about the family photo album, aunt fanny already grabbed that.....(and the camcorder)....... think hard, what one item/ object would you grab....... scoob (of the ask a silly question class)..... well don't just sit there!
.....what???.

Would You Buy Lottery Tickets In Front of a Jehovah's Witness???Sure - why not? I could give a rat what they think.
I bought cigarettes in front of them (back when I used to smoke) - so why not a lotto ticket?
jw's love this topic and have a long list of "do's & don'ts" that need to be completed in order to be saved.
as you all know - it is a "works based" belief - if you do enough you might make it.
i have struggled with that concept since i was little, wondering how in the world we could ever do enough to be considered worthy.
It doesn't make sense that you only get the guidance when you don't need it.
Derek - I believe God will not send the holy spirit to guide a person unless asked to, for the simple reason that it is each person's own choice whether they WANT the holy spirit or not. He doesn't impose that on us - he lets us decide if that is what we want.

I have struggled with that concept since I was little, wondering how in the world we could ever do enough to be considered worthy. And if we could - then why did we need Jesus' ransom anyways? Not to mention those scriptures that talk about life as a "free gift" - it's not free...I'm working m @ss off for it!! It was this one topic alone that finally made me give up trying to be a witness.
The past 3 weeks our pastor has been giving a 3 part series/sermon on this exact topic - and I learned something I never knew before.
Reading through the new testament you will find that there are TWO types of things you can receive from God (1) gift=life, and (2) rewards. Whenever the scripture talks about life it refers to it as a free gift, a gift of faith, something given to the believer when they accept Jesus as their savior. It is clear that this "gift" can not be earned.
So what about all those scriptures that talk about loosing our rewards, gaining rewards, etc? Jesus talked about storing up treasures in heaven - these are the "rewards". What you get above and beyond your "free gift" of life.
Eternal Life is given to you when you accept Jesus as your savior - and you can't loose that gift. But you can earn above and beyond this gift by your "works" - doing good in essence.
I'm very interested in this as it explains a lot of the confusion I had as a JW. I plan to re-read the new testament and make a chart of each scripture that mentions a reward vs. gift to test and see if this is true.
Interested in your thoughts.
the watchtower says regarding john 1:1: "someone who is "with" another person cannot also be that other person" .
this argument is used by them againist the trinity.
while trinitarians believe that there is only one god, they also believe that there are distinct persons within the one god and that each person is god.
I have a problem accepting the trinity teaching......however, there are a couple of scriptures that also cause me to consider this position.
Rev 1:8 God/Father is calling himself Alpha and Omega, yet Rev 1:17 Jesus is clearly speaking (as it says I was dead and behold am alive), and he calls himself the first and the last (alpha and omega). Then in Rev 22:12 says "Behold, I am coming soon" (who is coming again? Jesus of course) - and then calls himself the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last. So it appears in Revelation that both God and Jesus refer to themselves as the Alpha and the Omega.
John 14:8 tells a story of the last supper, Philip says to Jesus "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough" - Jesus' response "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time?" That struck me.
So - I still struggle with this issue and haven't decided yet - but I find arguments to support both sides in the bible.
for many years i have wondered about the nephalim, sorry if this is a previously asked question.. i don't undertsand how the angels could have got women pregnant.
surely they did not have any inherent capabilities of producing life.. it seems to me that only a creator would have that ability.
so how did the angels get the women pregnant?.
If Jeus as a teacher did in fact use the Noah story to illustrate his message, why does this necessitate it be a historical account?
Good point - I was making the assumption that because he used the story he was saying it was an actual account. He could have been using the story as an illustration. Thanks for sharing your view on this!

what if...................
it wasn't about sex at all? What if (now stay with me here...) these angels ...for some reason we are unaware of...wanted to modify the human race - to incorporate a foreign gene or trait that would then spread to the entire world population? Perhaps that is what the purpose behind impregnating the women was.
But the people at that time wouldn't understand genes/dna - they just think woohoo...we're so beautiful the angels can't resist us.
This would also possibly explain the reason God interveined and destroyed those that were already infected/mutated/whatever.
I'm not saying this is the WAY it was...just speculating that there could have been some type of event that occured but entirely different from what the people at that time perceived it to be.
There are a lot of stories in the old testament that I feel are just man's way of trying to explain his universe. But I am not as quick to toss the flood story out because Jesus directly spoke of it as though it was fact. I do believe in Jesus...so that leads me to think that perhaps there was something up with the story - and maybe something on an entirely different level than just angels wanting to get laid.
how many here are planning to see this movie.
also, can any of you direct me here to any topics about jesus himself.
i want to read up on the history of jesus.
I'm going!

quite recently my family and i have had some excellent news or received some wonderful surprises.
up to a year ago we would have given jehovah the thanks for all these "blessings" - which just goes to show what a load of baloney that was!
we haven't prayed since we left the borg a year ago this month and we're happier and healthier than we've ever been.
Don't you know that Jehovah makes the sun shine on the righteous and the UNRIGHTEOUS?!!!
.......well - that's the answer my parents always gave me.
