Were You Afraid Of The Elders?.Did Ya Love Em?...What Was Your View of Them

i've heard of brothers and sisters saying that they have "prayed for the elders because they love them for their hard work and sacrifice".

i've also heard of how some in the congregation were petrified of the elders and of course, there were those that said they were either only men or that they were direct representatives of jehovah god himself.

I used to be afraid of them - always had that guilty conscience thing going, even if I had NOTHING to be guilty about.

But - once my dad and brothers all became elders I realized they weren't anything special to be afraid of. Heck - if my family, being as screwed up hypocritical dysfunctional beings were appointed...well...you know.

Of course - I was only afraid of them so long as I gave them that power. They don't have any power over me now so I'm not afraid.

PS - I should add - there were a couple of elders that I felt (and still feel) were truly Christian. They really tried to help people and do the right thing. None of them were from MY family of course

Would you spit at his mother?

as scott peterson's mother exited the courthouse, where she heard the jury pronounce her son guilty of murder, the crowd moved in on her, jeered and booed her, and some spit at her.. scott certainly appears guilty and the jury who heard the evidence thought so.

i believe in the death penalty, but not in purely circumstantial cases like scott peterson's.

so, i favor life in prison, to give him opportunity either repent and pay his punishment, or to prove his innocence ... if he can.. however, to stand outside a court house to cheer at the verdict seems rather inane and ludricris.

People tend to blame the family for a criminal's behavior - especially in an instance where the criminal act is so awful. It's sad.

I remember once when one of our prosecutors came into my office after a meeting he had with a defendant's parents - the defendant was accused (and later convicted) of an extremely grusom and cruel murder. He shook his head and said "It's too bad that murdurers have mothers too". This mother was devastated to think that her son could have done such a horrible thing - and yet, she was also devastated knowing that he was going to face the death penalty. She begged for mercy for him. Of course she did - what mother wouldn't? It's an awful thing for a mother to face.

Let's see....I'll choose #12: Been out so long I forgot what the S-8's looked like (didn't even realize they had a form number!).

I do remember having a really cool 3 ring binder type book to keep them in - but I wasn't really successful in service, so while I had all the cool tools I didn't use them much. Gee - if only I had my PDA back then, I could have recorded all kinds of useful stats like their birthday, christmas gift ideas, ......(opps......never mind)

What Do You Do When You Get The "Blues"???

every once in a while we all get the blues.

we start overthinking, overanalyzing----we dwell on negatives.

what do you do to get out of this frame of mind?

I guess it would depend on what caused the "blue" feeling to begin with. Generally, when I get the blues I feel better if I get out of the house and do something fun - visit my friends, go for a bike ride, hit the mall and buy a new outfit, go to a movie etc. Sometimes I realize I'm not really blue - but bored. If the blues last longer than a day or two then I talk it over with my husband, try to figure out what's causing it.

I'm fortunate in that I don't get the blues very often - generally I am a very happy person. But I did have a loooooong recovery from the blues after my dad died and my brother was killed shortly after - that was a hard year.

i think that the aclu is clearly engaging is censorship.. .

Hell, if the bible thumpers want to put their ideas in science books, then the scientists should be able to put the following sticker in all bibles:
This bible contains material on god. God is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of everything. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully, and critically considered.

Elsewhere - you crack me up!! This would be great.........but we don't really need it since God isn't allowed in school anymore.

Religion has a horrible track record when it tries to counter science.

I definately agree here! People tend to hide from facts that counter their beliefs - same way I did for so long as a 'dub. It's hard to view things with an open mind because it may mean a radical change in the foundations upon which we have based our lives. The funny thing is, hiding from facts is really evidence of a lack of faith. After all, if you REALLY have faith in God - then why hide from any questions or research? If he is true, he will prove to be true no matter what. It is this very reasoning that helped me escape from the JW's as I realized that if it WAS the truth then they shouldn't be afraid of questioning and researching outside of their accepted material. Yet - they were.

Evolution for all intents and purposes is an established fact. (The exact mechanisms which drive evolution are theoretical.)

Evolution does explain why we have so much variety of species on our planet, but it can not explain or prove how the original "life" came to be, or what gives life. Those questions are all still answered with only theories.

I love watching debates between creationists vs. evolutionists - both sides have their "proof" but the bottom line is that neither side can prove where exactly the spark of life began. Both sides accept their point of view on faith - the creationist has faith that it was God, the evolutionists has faith it was not.

having been df'd about a year ago for apostasy (the sin of thinking for yourself without disengaging your mouth) i have taken advantage of several opportunities to speak to local jw's.

I have quite a few experiences, but will share this one because it's most recent and funny. A few nights ago hubby and I went out to a nice restaurant/bar to have some beer and appetizers. While we were sitting at the bar sharing jokes and funny stories, a JW couple (who I knew quite well years ago) came in and sat behind us. I didn't notice them, the bar was pretty full and I was focused on hubby. In fact, I never did notice them until they were done with their meal and the JW husband got up, came over, and leaned over the bar where I was sitting to get the attention of the bartender in order to hand him the bill. Funny thing is - he didn't need to do that - at this restaurant/bar you just leave your $$ on the table with your bill and the waitress picks it up. As soon as he (the JW husband) had my attention, then he turned on the "I'm being obvious and shunning you" look and behavior. So - I just turned back around and kept visiting my husband.

The guy came over AGAIN and leaned over the bar where I was sitting (for some other useless reason), then when he had my attention, tried the "I'm shubbing you again" look. I thought it was hillarious! After all - aren't they supposed to be AVOIDING me? Evidentially, they can't avoid me unless I KNOW they are avoiding me. I got a good laugh over that one - how neurotic! At least it offered me some fun and cheap entertainment.

A question for you managers out there....

i work for a fairly large organization - we have over 35 satelite offices spread out across the state.

there are jw's in some of these satelite offices that i deal with on a regular basis.

i have never had a problem with them because i view work as work, it is a professional environment and each individual is judged based on their work performance.

Thanks all of you for your feedback - it really helped. I think that next time the she approaches me on this subject I will just suggest that she do some research on her own, and suggest google or the public library.

Oh - and Happy Guy - you said "You are opening yourself up to a workplace sexual harrassment accusation "...um...I'm also a gal...(a heterosexual married gal)
