  i've been noticing lots of these pins on lapels.

  i could almost understand the jwdotorg pin because the new mantra is to go to the website.

  but why on earth are they sporting a building?

  OK Richard Oliver......give me your 'expert' opinion:

  The writers of the Simpsons cartoon show decide that they want to have a subset of characters, much like 'Itchy and Scratchy', appear on the show from time to time. They decide to copy exactly the characters of Caleb and Sophia from the Watchtower videos. Everything about the characters is identical: voice inflections, dress and grooming, their names, their facial expressions and even includes them using Watchtower 'talk' without directly lifting information 'word for word' from any publication. Does the Watchtower Society have any recourse against the creators of the Simpsons cartoon or not? If so, why? If not, why not?

  Richard Oliver......thank you for not providing ANY proof that Caleb and Sophia as characters are not copyrighted or trademarked. I am to accept your word just because you say so. Read the link that I provided and perhaps you will learn something.

  Actually, Richard Oliver, I believe that Watchtower can obtain both copyright and trademark rights for Caleb and Sophia if they so desire. You stated that "Watchtower does not own a copyright for Caleb and Sophia, nor are they able to claim a copyright for Caleb and Sophia." Can you provide direct evidence for such a claim? Caleb and Sophia are not just depictions of a generic boy and girl but rather are specific characters used to present a copyrighted idea. Go to JW.ORG and access the Children's page "Become Jehovah's Friend". There you will find videos, songs and activities based around the Caleb and Sophia characters. Now, scroll down to the bottom of the page and notice that it says: "Copyright (c) 2017 Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania." Next, click on TERMS OF USE and you will see that they 'claim' copyright for all text and information on the website. To further your legal education I have provided a link for you to a 'real' lawyer discussing the subject of Character trademarks and copyright:

  thought i'd give you an account of my latest family dysfunction.. a brief backstory is that i am an only child whose parents were born in jw's.

  Sounds just like my mother! She was viciously criticizing me right up to her death in the hospital! Lots of cruel and unchristian parents were produced by the Watchtower doctrine. I have complete empathy and sympathy for you having to grow up in a dysfunctional family system. At least we survived and thrived the best we could without intentionally hurting others.   That a very interesting observation. In comparing the Aid book to the Insight book on the entry of Expelling, the Insight book completely leaves out the following paragraph that was found in the Aid book:

  "Jesus gave full instructions to his followers as to the procedure on handling cases of sin in the congregation and indicated that it could result in one's being expelled, so that the individual would be to the congregation 'just as a man of the nations and a tax collector.' (Matt. 18-15-17) Tax collectors were much looked down upon; many were extortioners. A Jew who was a tax collector was considered a renegade, classed with sinners. (Mark 2:16) Of course, Jesus and his disciples were still under the Law, but in principle the same procedure continued to guide the Christian congregation. It might be remarked here that, by the 'congregation' , Jesus did not mean that the entire membership sat in judgment of the offender; the responsible ones in charge did this.
