The Jimmy Olson story is 100% true. His brother Marvin was my roommate for a time at Watchtower Farms. "It sounds like a prison camp." You don't realize how close to the truth that statement is pale.emperor. You eat, sleep, study, shit, shave, shower and work in the same 'environment' 24 hours a day around all the same people. Your only break is rushing to meetings and field service. If you had a car, which I did, you could escape for a limited time. If Bethel life is an example of 'New World Living', than I would rather be dead than face eternity in such an environment with most of those people. When you are young, 4 years seems like an 'eternity', and maybe Jimmy felt the way I do.

Chapter 31 New Boy 50 years a Watchtower slave
by new boy inchapter 31. murder suicide and death at the big house.
the people at bethel were killing us spiritually and sometimes they killed us physically too.. many of the old timers were in the infirmary laying there just waiting to die of natural causes.

"In effect, the 'collection plate' is not passed at the Kingdom Hall, but has been passed from DOOR TO DOOR'
That is one of the most succinct, truthful and insightful statements that I have EVER read on this forum. Thank you, Londo111 for 'hitting the nail on the head'.

I never noticed the rewards program before! WTF! This seems like the reverse of 'money changers at the temple'. The 'evil' money changers had to be driven out of the Temple by Jesus because they charged a fee for exchange rates and making 'change' for large denomination coins from those donating to the Temple treasury and now the 'evil' money changers are welcomed into the Temple by the Governing Body because they reward those who are making donations into the Temple treasury by using the 'evil' money changers form of financial exchange. Now that's what I call: "Making friends with unrighteous riches"!

Congratulations and best wishes for your future.I had therapy for about 2 years starting in 2006. It was the best thing I ever did for myself and I commend you for doing something so positive for your own emotional well being. Life will still be difficult but at least you have jettisoned 'excess baggage' that won't continually drag you down. Celebrate life and remember: 'At any given moment, there is more right with you, than wrong with you'!

I never knew bow ties were not 'approved' witness apparel. Since I was 15 years old I mostly wore bow ties to the meetings, out in service and on assembly programs. When I was a Bethelite, sometimes I would fill in on the waiter crew. I was allowed to wear all manner of colorful bow ties until some 'tight ass' Bethel Elder 'reminded' me that all Bethel waiters wear a BLACK bow tie only. In fact, at my going away party from my congregation, I was given a large hand made bow tie mounted on a plaque with the following inscription: "I will not put my trust in my bow" - Psalms 44:6.

You are not alone, Akid48. When I was between 5 and 7 years old I had a copy of the Photo Drama of Creation and read it cover to cover. Even at that age I had a WTF moment. None of it made sense to me but being a 'born in' (almost, my mother was baptised when I was a baby) I went along with it until adulthood. Even when I sincerely tried to put my nose to the grindstone and give the religion a try, I could not shake those feelings of doubt and uneasiness.

Governing Body Members Autographing Bibles
by HereIgo ini have an online ex jw friend who pointed out to me that she stumbled upon a may 15, 1999 watchtower that had pictures of governing body members autographing bibles for people.
i have no bound volumes or cd rom copies anymore so i can verify.
two things came to mind, if this is true:.

Very interesting scenario: A group of religious 'rulers' giving personalized gifts to a group of secular 'rulers'. Peer to peer gift giving or 'gifts among equals' is the impression that I take away from this encounter.
Interestingly enough, it can be considered poor manners to give a book as a gift under the wrong circumstances:
Top 10 Times Not to Give a Book by Beth Carswell, AbeBooks.com
10. You don't know them well enough. Period.
Rule of thumb: If you don't really know someone, you can't know their taste, so even a book you adored may be inappropriate.
It would seem to me highly unlikely that any of the Governing Body(tm) members were on a first name basis or were personal friends of any of these politicians. Hence, if some of the politicians did not believe in the Bible, giving one as a gift could have done more harm than good.

"Even hustled at pool in one of the road houses in the mountains." I wish you had told me! We could have 'tag teamed' a few unknowing marks and lived like kings. I grew up on 8 ball. We had a pool table at home since I was about 12 years old.

All this draft talk got me curious. So I got out my Bethel invitation letter to see what it had to say on the subject. "Your questionnaire indicates you have received a 4-D classification from your draft board. If there has been any change in this please advise me before reporting." N. H. Knorr. As an interesting side point, some type of issue arose with the draft board not too long into my Bethel career. I never found out about it until it was taken care of by the legal department. I got a packet in the Bethel mail with all the documents and a letter from W. K. Jackson stating that his department had handled the matter for me and not to give it any concern. Paternalism at it's finest!
