  i am wondering how those who believe jesus is the almighty lord god reconcile the following passages in chapter 1.

  john 1:1 - ..."the word was god.

  john 1:14 - "and the word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the father,) full of grace and truth.

  I am wondering how those who believe Jesus is the Almighty Lord God reconcile the following passages in Chapter 1.

  John 1:1 - ..."the Word was God."

  John 1:14 - "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. "

  John 1:18 - "No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him."

  If one believes that the Word, or Jesus, was God, then how can the apparent conflict found in verses 14 and 18 be resolved? If the Word became flesh and dwelt among us then he certainly was seen by many people on the Earth. However, verse 18 states that no one has seen God.

  Carmel, I have to agree with you on this one. I work with a Muslim and we often discuss current events. He and I both agree that our respective faiths leave no room for the type of extremists we see today. Both of us have never come upon a faith that would allow someone in modern times to kill in the name of God, only those on the fringe of the faith believe that.

  i kinda freaked out when i read about the history of the Jews and monotheism

  that they adopted YHWH from a bunch of gods they worshipped. i just pretend i didnt read that and move on LOL

  Where did you read that? First time I've ever heard that. I find it hard to believe.

  I should say that I don't necessary put faith in these things right now...all I've ever heard about them is negative.

  That being said, I want to approach it from a critical viewpoint. What can I learn about Islamic culture? What about Hindus? I try to see these books the historical context of the times...why were they written, etc...

  Our old PO had a degree in Forensic Science. Had a career in that field. I used to see him with jackets that said 'CSI' on the back.

  I like Schonfield's "Authentic New Testament" since it gives the sources behind many NT phrases and sayings. It also comments on points of doctrine in the early ekklesia that were later changed.

  I also like translations of individual books, like Robert Alter's translation/commentary on Genesis - a mine of fascinating information.

  Both these sound great. I've been reading the Archaeological Study Bible (NIV) along with Keil and Delitzch Old Testament commentary. With so much info in these two sources, I can only read a chapter or so at a time. I also get the sense that I'm not seeing for forest for the trees.

  Anyone have any favorite commentaries?
