I thought Russell's belief came from the Millerite movement? BTW is it true that Russell was of Jewish Hertiage?

Apart from JW's, do others still feel 1914 was a turning point in history?
by jwfacts inthe watchtower claims that hisorians say 1914 was when the world changed forever.
as a jw the year 1914 is repeated so endlessly that it seems it must have been the turning point in history and hence the beginning of the last days.
but i have never really heard anyone else ever mention that year, apart from the odd history lesson on ww1.. do people in general ever think of or discuss 1914 as being a year of any significance?.

Euthanasia for humans, is it right or wrong?
by FreedomFrog inok guys, i'm working on a 1500 word paper for my communications class and it's due in about 7 weeks.
i'm collecting information for my paper.
how do you feel about legalizing assisted suicides for people?
-
kwr
Well here in Oregon Assisted suicide is legal. There is even a industry of bringing out of State people into Oregon to help them end their life. The way it works here is you go to a doctor and receive a fatal prescription of a narcotic. Under the law you are supposed to adminsister it yourself, but there are people that will do it for you. Those are the people that do it for legal reasons, but others just take a overdose of heroin to end their life and not counted in the official assited suicide tally.
I have a friend that works as a CNA and she sees the children of elderly parents push them to commit suicide so they don't spend the inheritance on nursing home care.

Fourth of July
by mama1119 ini was just wondering.......i know jw are not allowed to celebrate the fourth, in fact it can we a jc issue, but where we live there is a huge celebration downtown and every year i see 90% of the witnesses i know down there, "not celebrating".
they are doing the same thing all the other "wordly" people are doing to celebrate the fourth...and alot of times jw will buy fireworks and let them off the day before, as if thats different.....how do they justify this???
does anyone else have anything around them that jw will participate in but not call celebrating????

I have never figured out why Thanksgiving is not allowed by the WTS, it is not a pagan holiday. I don't think I can join because I do IT work for politicos and other churches. I'm not going to give up my career for a religion. Now if I was a soldier I would give that up, but work is work. -

Maybe we could get Ann Coulter in front of a JW judicial committee to find out if she has ever broken this command? ;-)

How long is a creative day? check this article out!
by No Apologies inok i know there has been a lot of discussion over the years on the length of the creative days, and whether the society still refers to these days as being 7,000 years long.
i ran across an article just a few years ago that mentioned the length of the creative day, and i made a mental note of it.
unfortunately i no longer have access to a wt library cd, so i had to look through my collection of mags to find it.

FYI, Paul did not write the Book of Hebrews. Most likely Hebrews was written by the Jewish Levi Priest Barnabas a close associate of Paul.

anti DoorKnocking / neo Green River Act in New England?
by james_woods ini saw a short piece last night on an activist group in a little town in (i believe) connecticut -.
they were trying to enact local legislation to limit door knocking.
the issue was not the jws - it was about one of those general magazine salespeople who got into some elderly ladies house and robbed & murdered her a year or two back.
-
kwr
Well, kw, that is just great.
So, In the eyes of the present supreme court:* it is perfectly ok for the police to bust down your door without knocking to search the premesis...
That is not what the Supreme Court ruled about not knocking before entering a home with a valid search warant.
* it is perfectly ok for your city coucil to take your house through eminent domain, in order for their friendly local development company to build a shopping mall...
The court decided this on a States Rights issue. If you want to change the law if your State allows that then organize your fellow citizens to prevent the use of eminent domain. BTW, They don't take your house they purchase it for fair maket value.
* it is perfectly ok for weird religious or political groups (which you do not wish to talk with) to knock on your door at all hours day or night.
You can tell them to leave your property and never come back. If they do in most States you can arrest them for trespassing.
With the three subjects you listed it seems you have a problem with the Constutition of the United States. You could always immigrate to a nanny state like the UK.

Why Tracts? And Why Now?
by metatron inah, the poor watchtower!
( is that literal these days?).
with their contributions sinking and expenses growing, they may have to further reduce the magazines - perhaps eliminating the awake.
-
kwr
The WTS finances are just fine and there is nothing to worry about. There have been changes to some magazines and tracts are being used for upcoming conventions. However, the cost of renting the convention centers is very high and they are having two or three conventions in many areas.
The JW's have 1 million baptized members in the US and another 1.5 million that are not baptized that attend congregations and support the WTS. They also are growing overseas and are financing legal battles in foreign countries regarding their beliefs and practices. If the average congregate gives $50 per month that is $125,000,000 per month and $1,500,000,000 per year.
