  Watchtower sued for Racketeering in California

  a little birdie informed me that a lawsuit against the watchtower bible & tract society, its legal department, and several individuals (perhaps lawyers in the legal department) has been filed in the superior court of the state of california, county of los angeles for, wait for it.... racketeering!.

  that's right, folks, you heard it here first.

  i have no other information, other than the case was stamped "aug 07 2015" and the docket number appears to be bc590675.

  Won't get fooled again ...Moon Landing.

  so i was fooled by the witnesses.

  what can i learn from that?

  not to accept things at face value but to seek out opinion and different view points.. hence my question " do you believe man landed on the moon?.

  One factor in the ability of the U.S to make a moon landing was the contributions of many german rocket scientist who worked for Natzi germany prior to and during world war two. The U.S. made an considerable effort to recruit these scientists to prevent Russia from getting the technology, they called it Operation Paperclip. The knowledge and expertise these men gained (most notably Werhner Bon Braun) during the war was invaluable in advancing the U.S. space program.

  This is a discussion board for those who have doubts about the org or have already left. You are on your own with the JW website, it has nothing to do with us. No hard feelings, but I wouldn't help anyone get literature about the Watchtower, as it is an abusive cult.

  I Made the Literature Trolley Run Away Today - Twice

  i popped into town this morning to buy an anniversary card for mrs cofty.

  it is market day on a saturday and it's tourist season so the town was very busy.

  here is a picture of the scene from a year ago... two cult carts were in their favourite place being guarded by none other than one of the elders who was on my judicial committee, his wife and another jw woman in her electric disability buggy.

  I now hate being called 'sister'

  since waking up i find i am bridling at being called 'sister'.

  but it feels like an identity that is being forced on me.. i feel like shouting "i have a name you know!".

  it is just me or does anyone else recognise this?.

  I do think using those terms is a part of the mind control. It is cult 101 to set yourself apart from other groups using different names for things is one way to do that. Everyone talks about "love bombing" and having people refer to each other as sister and brother is a way of making people feel like they are part of an instant family. It is also a way of distancing you from you real family ( ugh, "feshly" sisters and brothers, I always hated that term too). Of course it's an illusion, because if you step out of line, or disagree with your new "family" you will find out how loving they really are, which is to say not at all.

  I also believe using the term "sister" is a way to emphasize the lowly status of women in the organization and it is used in a way that reinforces the stereotype of women as being less intelligent, less capable and less important.

  My father believed the moon landing was a hoax, but I sort of understood that because when he was born (1917) automobiles, telephones and radio had only recently been invented. I thought that a moon landing probably just seemed too far out of the realm of possibility for him to wrap his head around. It's one of those things that some people just intuitively feel is not possible, like that crazy notion that we evolved from lower life forms, lol.

  It just makes no sense to me that thousands of NASA workers all conspired to fake the landing and that not one of them blabbed about it in almost fifty years. That would mean that every person who ever worked for NASA was both extremely dishonest and yet fiercly loyal to them. Not. One. Person. I find the odds of that to be so unlikely as to be unbelievable.

  Do people who believe that also think all space flights are faked? There have been so many, with so much evidence. Was the Challenger disaster faked? We're all those eye witnesses in on the conspiracy? If everything was faked, why fake something that made them look bad and required them to kill several innocent people?

  The lunar reconnaissance orbiter has taken many high resolution photos of the moon, showing the flags that have been left there. Was that faked too?

  But it all doesn't matter, because no matter how illogical it is or how much evidence there is to prove the moon landing, some people are determined believe it's a hoax and nothing I or anyone else says will make any difference to them.

  Some people still believe the earth is flat too.

  So, I became very ill ... what did my loving brothers do?

  recently i have fallen ill with a serious case of chickenpox (shingles).

  three weeks down, high fevers, and the blisters attacked mostly my scalp and face, but then also my whole upper body.

  i looked horrid, truly like a mutant monster out of a nuclear disaster.

  I'm sorry you had shingles, I know it can be very painful.

  Jesus said "by this all will know you are my disciples, that you have love amongst yourselves". The mark of a true follower of Christ is love. Not the preaching work, but love. Yet JWs will spend hours each week in the futile preaching work and zero time encouraging or helping their fellow believers. If you are sick and miss meetings you are considered weak and damaged goods, people will talk to you less, as if you have committed a sin. People are so busy with the burdensome requirements of witness life they don't have time to help out anybody, nor are they encouraged to do so. It's not like they can report time for it like field service.
  

  I occasionally attend the church that my in laws go to. They have people assigned to help the sick, the pastor helps those going through problems, and they feed the hungry on a regular basis. In church, people are encouraged to talk openly, during services about those in their family or who they know who are having problems, even if the people mentioned don't belong to that church.
  

  So who is a follower of Christ and who isn't?

  wt obviously must realize now the value of those that tried to enforce change on them.

  i think if it wasn't for these people doing what they did wt would be in even more drama now.

  so my question is do you ever think wt would voluntarily reinstate and publicly apologize to bill bowen and barbara anderson for all their hard work in bringing reform.

  the rothschild family will not allow the aussies to take any significant action against their religious wing (mormons, jws, adventists, etc.).

  the worst outcome for the borg will be a relatively small fine and a deadline to change their rules.

  Well it's not like the Royal Commission can bring down the Watchtower even if they wanted to, but I think they may be able to force them to do things differently, at least in Australia.

  And it does shine a light on the religion, something that is not good for them, as they have operated in secrecy for so long. No one thing will bring down the Watchtower, but the more negative things that are in the media the more people will question things.

  As far as conspiracy theories, I think people believe them because of confirmation bias and because it makes them feel smart because they have special knowledge and because it makes the world seem simpler and more understandable, even if it's in a negative way. Unfortunately the world is not that simple, and there is no one shadow group pulling the strings, it's complex and chaotic and no one group is controlling everything and there are no simplistic answers.

  Think about it, if the "Rothchilds" were controlling everything and were protecting the Watchtower, why didn't they prevent the Royal Commission from happening in the first place? It wouldn't have been that hard, no one knew anything about JWs and Child sex abuse a month ago, Now that all this is out in the open it will he much harder to prevent any negative repercussion to the WTBTS.

  Quality Thinking - Warning: Long Post Ahead

  recently, several threads have had some debate about logic, evidence, critical thinking and skepticism.

  i wanted to write a post discussing those things, hopefully to clarify what those things are, why they are important and how to use those tools.

  first, logic, at its core, is simply a method for how to reason validly, how to draw conclusions based on a premise.

  It's funny you mention computing because I believe that learning to program is what helped me learn to think in a more logical way and eventually helped me realise the Watchtower was wrong. I did not go to college, but worked my way up from admin to auditing to systems analyst. I liked the challenge and pushed myself to learn new things.

  I started out with excel, which is a very simple version of coding, then simplified version of Cobol. I was mostly self taught, so it was a lot of trial and error. If your code didn't run or didn't give you the results you want, then it was wrong, so you had to figure out why. I think the experience changed the way my brain worked in a way, it's Boolean logic, very black and white. I also had to do a lot of reporting and learn to communicate to people in every part of the company, explaining very complex technical issues to non technical people, all very good experience in learning to think.
